EDUCATION IS A COMPANION which no misfortune can decrease, no crime can destroy, no enemy alienate, no despotism enslave; at home a friend abroad an introduction, in solitude a solace, in society an ornament. EDUCATION chastens vice, guides virtue, and gives grace and government to genius. EDUCATION may cost financial sacrifice and mental gain, but in both money and life values it will repay every cost ONE HUNDRED FOLD Woodward High School Woodward, Oklahoma Table of Contents Administration Activities Royalty Sports Classes Board of Education (Left to right) Dr. R. This was the WAGON of 1968-69. The papers touched on the exterior and interior activities of W.H.S. and reached into the lives of the Boomers. They had to contend with pictures, no pictures, lost pictures, funny pictures, and too many pictures. They raced for deadlines, the funniest captions, and the best takes. Alicia with her bull-whip. Chick and Joe with the camera, and Janet with her typewriter, all were armed for the fight to bring the annual in on time. It was a year to hurry up and wait and to stay late and to do your best to produce the best, and we hope it was good enough! This year’s activities consisted of the Powderpuff Football game between the Junior and Senior girls, the Miss Woodward Contest, the Follies, the Coronation Ball. Intramural basketball. Christmas needy baskets, and the tremendous responsibilities of having the State Student Council Convention here. Besides helping with open house in November, their other projects were to observe teachers of the Jr. High and elementary schools and to sponsor a $25 bond which was given to a graduating member who will begin studying for a teaching career. The chapter sent delegates to the State Convention this spring. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Webb and Miss Reimers, the F.T.A. had a most successful year. 30 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The 1968-69 school year proved a very busy one for the Woodward Chapter of Future Homemakers of America. The club had a membership of seventy-nine girls in their Freshman. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. The club sponsored the selling of Halloween candy and concessions stands at several ball games as their money making projects for the year. One of the club's major projects was the sponsorship of a Korean orphan. On September 27. 1968, the Woodward F.H.A. was host to Sub-District Rally. Five hundred girls attended from eleven different towns. Other club projects for the year were a Daddy-date night, a Mother and Daughter banquet, and a Christmas party for the Future Farmers of America. A group of Junior and Senior members attended the State Fair. Thirty-six members of the club with the highest point average attended the State Rally in Oklahoma City. Thus one would have to conclude that the 1968-69 school year was a very profitable one for the Woodward Future Homemakers. OFFICERS SPONSOR Mr . The varsity, after completing regular season play, entered the state playoffs where they were defeated by Clinton, the state champions of both 1967 and 1968 in Class A. The Boomers bounced back, after early season defeats from highly ranked football teams in Oklahoma's class AA. Classen and Altus defeated the Boomers in the season's first games 20-13 and 27-7. Other losses in the first part of the season came from Perryton 38-9 and Clinton 42-16. Both Perryton and Clinton were ranked number I in their respective classes. Homecoming festivities, and their excitement, brought a proper setting for Woodward's first win. The Boomers held the Liberal Redskins scoreless during the entire game while they were able to score a touchdown in the first half to chalk up their victory, 6-0. After the first taste of victory, Woodward poured on the coal to wrap up the season in fine shape. Traveling to Elk City, their second game on the road. Woodward brought home the Elk's horns with a score of 7-2. Next, encountering their conference opponents, Alva and Guymon, the Black and Gold seized the district l-A by overpowering these two long-time foes. Woodward proved football forecasters wrong and tromped past Alva by the score, 15-6. This decisive victory brought the conference title within reach of the Boomers. The situation stood—if Woodward didn't beat Guymon they could lose the title with a coin toss. The possibility was eliminated when the Boomers stomped over the Tigers 24-6 and clinched a berth in the state playoffs. A smashing victory over Perry (33-7) gave the Boomers a winning record in regular season play. Then In the quarterfinals, the Clinton Tornadoes kept the Boomers from going further with a stunning defeat, 46-6. Woodward.. V. Pres.; Jim Burkett. Pres. Our first year in high school has truly been different, exciting, and inspiring. Getting used to our new way of life has been hard but has given us many unusual experiences. We seemed lost and mystified the first few days, but it didn't take long before we felt more at ease. The Sophomores have participated in the various school activities such as sports, band, F.T.A., Peppers. Thespians, etc. These activities really introduced us to high school life. The school year of 1968-69 has proved to be enjoyable and rewarding. True, it was harder than any other school year we have had so far, but we will always remember this, our sophomore year, as one of our best. We hope that the rest of our school years will be as good or better than the year of 1969. There were approximately four hundred high school student council representatives. As secretary for 1968 and host, Woodward provided homes and taxi service through individuals for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There was a tremendous job of organization and much work done by the Student Council here. Hours were spent finding and listing homes for the members in attendance, decorating the gym, filling the packets with articles given by city merchants, and finally planning and presenting the assemblies. It was a great task well done. Presiding officers for the year were: President—John Marshall High School, Vice-President—Perry High School, Secretary—Woodward High School. Our congratulations on the honor of being elected National Delegate. Student Council Convention i Table of Contents 90 Faculty Lorn Beckman A. E.
