With hard work and cooperation the Seniors provided W.H.S. with leadership, honors, and a full year of accomplishments. The Seniors were a class of fine and varied talent. The honors and awards acquired by members of this Senior Class can be viewed with pride by every student of W.H.S. We were sports stars, beauty queens, scholarship winners and members of many honorary groups both state and national. Although the Seniors contributed much to W.H.S., we feel we gained even more. The teachings, friendship, and memories of high school will remain an important part of every Senior. We thank everyone for the help, inspiration, and wonderful fun of our high school years. Perhaps the most significant undertaking made by the Boomer Staff was to increase the book from Standard High School size to University size. In addition to increasing the size of the page, the Boomer Staff increased the number of pages 15 percent. With these additions and the normal increase in cost of production, it was necessary for the staff to raise a much larger budget than ever before. The Staff members sold a total of 800 books. It is our sincere hope that our hours of pleasant work while recording the activities of this year will bring you even more hours of reminiscing. The ’67- 68 Wagon staff successfully attained the objective of creating the greatest newspaper in the history of Woodward High School. Under new administration and a completely revised policy, THE WAGON came off the presses bigger, more complete, and better written than ever before. The paper was almost twice as big as yester-year's editions, with the sports section offering six times more coverage. THE WAGON instituted several original features and used many regular columns to cover the wide range of high school news. In the general section Paul Meunier. editor, expressed his varied views in editorials and in a column of answers to letters addressed to the Wagon Forum. Other regular columns were Speech Speaks, Thespian Talks, Senior Sketches, The Opinion Poll, Wagon Clatter, Organization, Boomer Buys, Student Council Corner. and Wagon Notes. In the sports section James Foiles. sports editor, addressed the public in Sam's Soapbox and numerous editorials. Other features were The Forecast, Coaches Comments, The Quiz,' Boomer Blabber, and complete statistics on the teams and players. The sports coverage was tempered with humorous accounts in pictures and cartoons. Honest. The Peppers were responsible for making signs for the halls, collecting boxes for the bonfires, and preparing skits for the pep assemblies. 37 PRIDE OF NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA Mr. Jim McPherson was born August 20, 1937, in Claremore, Oklahoma. He considers Hooker, Oklahoma, his home town because he attended grades 4 through 12 there. His father is a Minister in the First Christian Church. Mr. McPherson graduated from Phillips University with a BA in Music Education. His first four years teaching were at Waukomis, Oklahoma. He spent most of his summers working on his Master's Degree while teaching at Cordell, Oklahoma. He started his ninth year of teaching at Woodward. This past summer he was elected to membership in the American School Band Directors Association. In order to belong to this Association you must have taught seven years, and be considered successful in the field of instrumental music. Out of four hundred directors in the state only thirty to date have been elected. Mr. McPherson considers this his highest achievement to date in his career. 38 The numerous honors and events made an exceptionally busy year for the 1967-68 Boomer Band. The Band began practicing several weeks before school started and was ready to serve as host for the visiting bands at the annual rodeo parade Aug. 30th. On Sept. 30th the Boomer Band represented N.W. Okla. at half-time ceremonies at the Oklahoma-Maryland game. This band day event was shown on regional television. Our band, the pride of Northwest Oklahoma, marched at all home football games and traveled to Perry to perform at half-time. A superior rating was earned by the band in the state marching contest at Alva in October. On Dec. 6th the band was co-host with the Woodward Chamber of Commerce for the Northwest Oklahoma Band Clinic. Thirteen high school bands attended and an honor band and two reading bands were formed. Following school the thirteen visiting bends joined the Woodward Jr. and Sr. High bands in the Christmas parade. The Woodward High School Band also attended the Laverne Music Festival in March, the district music contest the state instrumental contest, and closed the year by going to the Tri-state festival at Enid. The Stage Band performed for all home basketball games, concerts, and the Senior graduation. 39 Sarah Baker Penny Martin The members.of the ensemble had the honor of playing on the Cerebral Palsy Telethon this year in Oklahoma City. It bears the name of our organization around the top of the plane and around the lower side is the motto. In the center there is a house supported by two hands symbolizing that the future homes of America are in the hands of its youth. The Future Homemakers of America is an organization for girls of the freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school. In FHA the girls learn to be good citizens and strong leaders of our community. In addition, they learn more about the role of a homemaker. The 1967-1968 Woodward Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America had a good year with a membership of eighty girls. The chapter's major fund raising project was the selling of fifty-one cases of Halloween Trick-or-Treat candy to the community. Other money was raised through bake sales and operation of concession stands at ball games. One chapter project included the planting of the chapter flower, the red rose, at the Pioneer Museum. Members also served for organizational banquets, such as the FFA Banquet. This year's meetings included a film and a speech by the county health nurse, a speech by the high school counselor, and a demonstration by a beautician. The meetings also included a Halloween party for the members and their fathers, in which the fathers were contestants in a beauty contest. A Christmas party was held. During the party, the girls made a trip to a rest home at which time they left tray favors and sang Christmas carols. At the end of the year, a picnic was given in honor of the members' mothers. In addition to the meetings and projects, members made trips to the Sub-district rally at Vici and the State Rally in Oklahoma City. Truly, it can be said that the Woodward FHA Chapter not only worked for the betterment of the school and community, but also for the state and the nation. At the state Student Council Convention held at Putman City High School, our Council was the only school seeking the post of Secretary of the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils. The 700 delegates of the Convention gave Woodward High School a standing ovation for the desire to hold the Student Council Convention at Woodward in the fall of 1968. Among other achievements were the District II Organizational Workshop held here October 30, 1967, which brought 85 delegates from Western Oklahoma, and the Great Plains Association of Student Councils—District II Spring Convention March 16, 1968. The Council organized the first Powder Fuff Football game, and sponsored the first Junior-Senior girls basketball game. Other changes brought about by student council participation were self nomination for all of the officers in Woodward High School. The election of Mr. and Miss Boomer by the whole student body, and made it the best Christmas yet in Woodward High School by organizing a Door Decorating Contest in which all homerooms participated. A MISS WOODWARD CONTESTANT 63 Boomer Football Varsity The 1967 Boomers got off to a slow start and then had a four game winning streak before losing their final game to the powerful Perry ball club. The Boomer's defense was especially impressive through the four games that the Boomers won. The defenders allowed only 5 touchdowns over this four game span. The secondary pass defense was extremely successful by knocking out 37 out of 40 pass attempts by their opponents. Offensively, one of the most outstanding features was David Estes' kicking ability. David, a junior, kicked a difficult 30 yard field goal to give the Boomers working room in a close 18-14 contest with Oklahoma City Central. In the next game, David booted a 37 yarder over the Elks of Elk City. Then the great one came that proved to be the winning three points for the Boomers. David kicked a 33 yard field goal in 20 degree temperature and a strong north wind late in the fourth quarter. This field goal allowed the Boomers to come from behind 7-6 and beat the Black-well team 9-7. One of the most fabulous combinations was the passing of J. D. Harrison to Ted Luthl. Ten times Ted grabbed Harrison's passes for 313 yards, and 4 touchdowns. The touchdowns were for 28, 57, 47, and 40 yards. The Boomers had better luck on home ground, winning three out of five contests at Boomer Field, while winning only one game out of four on the road. The Boomers got off to a sluggish start. The hard-hitting Altus Bulldogs, one of the best Double A teams in the state smashed the Boomers in their opening game at Altus 39-0. The Perryton Rangers known all over Texas as having fine football teams defeated the Boomers 41-8 in a hard fought game at Perryton. Then came the heartbreaker, the 63-26 trouncing by the Guymon Tigers. The Boomers just couldn't get their defense working right. This game proved to be the turning point for the Boomer football team. After the Guymon game the Boomers emerged as a powerful ball club. In the pouring rain the Boomers gave the number one ranked state and nationally Clinton Red Tornados the scare of the season. Although Clinton won the game, they only got by 20-0. Some say that fate wasn't with the Boomers. A pass interception by Clinton's superman Roy Bell and a Woodward fumble on the Clinton 7 knocked out our luck. This game was the closest Clinton played all year. They defeated Guymon 53-0 in the state quarterfinals and went on to sweep the state. Then the Boomers won four in a row. They beat the Oklahoma City Central Cardinals 18-14 in an exciting football game. The Boomers then defeated Alva in one of the most exciting football games of the year. The score was tied 8-8 until late in the fourth quarter and J. D. Harrison passed to Ted Luthi for one of those great touchdown passes. The Boomers won that game by a score of 14-8 before over 3,000 cheering fans. Then the Boomers edged past the Blackwell Maroons 9-7 on the late fourth quarter field goal by David Estes. That was a real thrill of a game. The Boomers closed their season on a sad unlucky game by losing to Perry 21-12. If ever luck was with the Boomers, it was not with them that night. In every area of statistics the Boomers rolled past Perry, but the score didn't come out that way. The Boomers' most discouraging defeat was to the Guymon Tigers, because it put the conference title out of reach. The most invigorating victory was the defeat of Alva. Charles Leipart, and Larry Joplin by dropping the initial contest to Clinton 22-12. Quarterback Gary Stallings scored one of the Jr. Boomer TD's and Kelly Diercks hit Terry Nelson for the other counter. The Jr. Boomers bounced back the following week by trouncing Laverne 30-6 at Laverne. The Boomer offense untracked itself for over two hundred yards total offense while the defense was almost invulnerable. Nursing a record of one win and one loss, the Jr. s took on the Mooreland Jr. Bearcats and stretched their record to two victories against one defeat. The final score read 38-14 as Stallings. Diercks. and Garry Love pushed the scores across the goal line. The Jr. Boomers line was impressive as the team moved the ball almost at will. Steve Grey was the center. Stuart Meyer and Joe Smith, the guards, Daved Bleckley and Chris Long the tackles and Ray Anderson and Don Hough manned the ends. The Jr. Boomers traveled next to Guymon to face the ever-fierce Guymon Jr. Tigers. The Blue and White Boomers trailed 10-8 at half-time but fought back for a 26-16 victory. The Jr. Boomer pride really showed through in the come-from-behind victory. Elk City's Jr. Elks invaded Woodward the following Thursday and defeated the Jr. Boomers 18-6. But the Jr. Boomers didn't lose their spirit and came back strong the following week and defeated the Beaver Dusters 30-14. Strong offensive line play opened holes in the Beaver line to give Stallings. Love, Garcia and Diercks ample running room. Next came the Enid Waller Wildcats at Enid. The Jr. Boomers were defeated 36-18 but fought throughout the game and scored their final touchdown with less than one minute to play. The Jr. Boomers wound up the season on a pleasant note by walloping Waynoka's Jr. Railroaders 45-6. The Boomers scored in every quarter and played consistent football throughout the contest. The season featured five wins and three losses as the Boomers had to overcome the loss of Bleckley midway through the season and were forced to play without halfback Denny Woodruff and Billy Hays because of pre-season injuries. Jr. Boomers headed for another victory. 101 Junior Boomers Jr. Boomers, first row. left to right: S. Marlatt, M. Upchurch. D. Dick, M. Dauphin, T. Jividen, L. Ogden. 2nd row: S. Newell, D. Nixon. V. Annual Staff salutes Coaches Kenneth Edmonds and Larry Joplin along with their boys, the Freshmen of 1968, for a truly remarkable season. Billy Hays gets another two-pointer. Gary Stallings grabs a loose ball against Clinton. Woodward’s Ninth Grade Jr. Boomers came with another fine season, winning 15 and losing one. This was a continuation of their work as eighth graders in 1966-67, when the team won 15 while losing none. Over the two-year span the Jr. Boomers won 30 games while losing one. The suffering by the Jr. Boomers came early in the season with Enid Waller Jr. High doing the damage to the tune of 33-27. It was the third game of the season after the Jr. Boomers had dumped Ft. Supply and Mooreland. In the Ft. Supply game, the Freshmen lost the services of 6'4 Ray Anderson for the season. Early in the second quarter the Jr. Boomers post man suffered several broken bones in his right ankle. His talents were sorely missed for the remainder of the season. To make matters worse, Mike Bixler, 6 I forward was stricken with the measles and missed the next game with Clinton. The Jr. Boomers won the contest 29-27, but had to scramble from behind for the victory. With outstanding teamwork and determination, the Jr. Boomers knotted the score 27-27. Then, with seven seconds remaining, 61 Billy Hays sank a 22-footer for the victory margin. The Jr. Boomers then traveled to Laverne for their only Tournament of the season. They dropped Selman in the semi-finals and then toppled Laverne for the trophy. Following the tournament, the Freshmen took on a new opponent, the Eagles of Hennessey. The victory over the Eagles pushed the season s record to six wins against one loss. The Jr. Boomers played host to the Clinton Whirlwinds on January 4 and won 37-36. Once again, the Clintonites proved to be a formidable foe and once again the Jr. Boomers had to fight from behind for the victory. Gary Stallings, 5'6' guard, stole the ball with seconds to go and hit the driving lay-up for the one-point margin. The Freshmen then knocked off Laverne before traveling to Enid Waller for the opportunity to avenge the only defeat of the season. After two overtimes the Jr. Boomers prevailed 45-42. Following the triumph of Waller the Freshmen stopped Turpin, Ft. Supply, Hennessey, Laverne, Beaver, and Mooreland to wind up the season. 105 First row, from left to right: Gory Goodman—35, Len Hart—33. Sidney Main—41, Bruce Benbrook—21, Charles Hensley—43.
