A •j Come, gather round the old rockin’ chair and hear that old pioneer, Uncle Ezra, tell the story again of that wonderful class of 1948 of Woodward High School. “Wal, seems as how I recollect when them thar kids first entered the halls of W. H. S., green as all get out, they was, too. Them teachers just about give up toward the middle of the year and they hadn’t larned nothin’ yet. They was smart in pickin’ their leaders, though. They picked Bill Mancillas, Bill Heaton, Evan Reynolds, and Nada Jane Bell. Jimmy Parker and Pat Timken were yell leaders and the class might never have got through their Freshman year if it hadna’ been for their sponsors, Mrs. Espy and Mrs. Miller. Wal, them teachers finally gave up lami.i’ them anythin’ and passed ’em jist to git rid of ’em. “By the beginnin’ of their second year in the old Boomer school, them kids seemed to have done a little better. They even remembered whut stairs to go up and down. Why, half the time they even recollected sich things as pink and blue slips. That year they picked Bill Mancillas, Jimmy Hamlin, Bill Heaton, Wayne Owens, and Betty Van Nostrand for their officers. Mr. W. M. Russell and Miss Sherrill were the teachers who were their invaluable sponsors. “When, in the fall of ’46, they came back to W. H. S. as upperclassmen, it seemed like them kids were almost smart, what with them choos-in’ sich leaders as J. T. McLain. Bill Heaton, Harold Lowrey, and Mary Alice Sheets, with Claude Beck and Pat Timken as yell leaders. Wal, them thar kids was a’ gittin’ along right good, when I’ll be dad-blamed if one o’ them big winds, tornaders, they call ’em, didn’t come along and nigh near blow the whole town dway. They didn’t have no more school that year, but they did get to meet once later when they had a Jr.-Sr. party-picnic-dance at Boiling Springs. “When they came back to Woodward High fur their last year, it seemed as if they had been studyin’ all summer, they was so smart. Wal, they picked Bill Heaton, J. T. McLain, Wanita Lehr, Bonita Lehr, Bill Mancillas, and Dortha Eddings as leaders in their last year. They looked forward to this year both happy and sorry that this was to be their last in high school. Now they approach the time when it becomes necessary to make decisions as to what to do in life. However, whatever they do, wherever they go, though in sorrow or in happiness, they will always remember their motto, ‘As a man thinketh, so is he’.”
