H. S., green as all get out, they was, too. Them teachers just about give up toward the middle of the year and they hadn’t larned nothin’ yet. They was smart in pickin’ their leaders, though. They picked Bill Mancillas, Bill Heaton, Evan Reynolds, and Nada Jane Bell. Jimmy Parker and Pat Timken were yell leaders and the class might never have got through their Freshman year if it hadna’ been for their sponsors, Mrs. Espy and Mrs. Miller. Wal, them teachers finally gave up lami.i’ them anythin’ and passed ’em jist to git rid of ’em. “By the beginnin’ of their second year in the old Boomer school, them kids seemed to have done a little better. They even remembered whut stairs to go up and down. Why, half the time they even recollected sich things as pink and blue slips. That year they picked Bill Mancillas, Jimmy Hamlin, Bill Heaton, Wayne Owens, and Betty Van Nostrand for their officers. Mr. W. M. Russell and Miss Sherrill were the teachers who were their invaluable sponsors. “When, in the fall of ’46, they came back to W. H. S. as upperclassmen, it seemed like them kids were almost smart, what with them choos-in’ sich leaders as J. T. McLain. Bill Heaton, Harold Lowrey, and Mary Alice Sheets, with Claude Beck and Pat Timken as yell leaders. Wal, them thar kids was a’ gittin’ along right good, when I’ll be dad-blamed if one o’ them big winds, tornaders, they call ’em, didn’t come along and nigh near blow the whole town dway. They didn’t have no more school that year, but they did get to meet once later when they had a Jr.-Sr. party-picnic-dance at Boiling Springs. “When they came back to Woodward High fur their last year, it seemed as if they had been studyin’ all summer, they was so smart. Wal, they picked Bill Heaton, J. T. McLain, Wanita Lehr, Bonita Lehr, Bill Mancillas, and Dortha Eddings as leaders in their last year. They looked forward to this year both happy and sorry that this was to be their last in high school. Now they approach the time when it becomes necessary to make decisions as to what to do in life. However, whatever they do, wherever they go, though in sorrow or in happiness, they will always remember their motto, ‘As a man thinketh, so is he’.” Secretary................................... It seemed much larger than ever before As the “man in the moon” opened the door. I closed my eyes, a vision behold! There were my Senior friends so proud and so bold: Heaton leads first—Captain of the group; At other times he’s barker of a circus troup. Cecil A., a bubble-gum salesman—(we knew it!) While Vi and the kids stay home and chew it. Gerald Barnett, a swaggering insurance guy— Then Betty Lou and hubby trying to see eye to eye. Evan—President!—president of the “Lonely Heart Club.” Behind him—George Vassar, selling “Cure-all Rub.” Helen Crosiant Oiler—Still Helen Crosiant Oiler. Then Pat, holding Wesley, Jr. by the collar. There is Bob Woods, on a good will tour And La Vena imitating Dotty La—Moor! It seems Twila G. has changed her name While Virginia L. and Wilma R. did the same. To see Jim Pollock as—hum-m, was I surprised! A new thing-a-ma-jig he has devised! There’s Jo Anne Morris doting over her priceless jewels, As Juanita M. brags about her ten swimming pools. Dorothy West is now traveling back East And “Moe” Nelson’s the chef at the Annual Governor’s Feast. Braley now dances! (He took Fred Astaire’s place.) James Glaze, a missionary to some heathen race. It’s now “Stella Dallas” alias Neva June, Who really makes the amateurs swoon! J. T., a biologist with world-wide fame, And Dortha an old maid—Oh! what a shame! Larry (the artist) now slaves on the railroad While Roberta Buss is inventing a new Morse code. Phyllis Atwell’s still chasing—cats, that is! Eldred drives a Cadillac—no, it’s not his! Mary Alice is playing the same old game. Royetta is companion to some old dame. Beck, a rich banker, (we should have known). Nada Jane still has her bell . . . telephone. Arlen and Orchestra are still around. Norval Clifford, head of a big dept.—“The Lost and Found.” You heard about Angeline—You know—“Naughty Angeline?” Keith Scates’ latest song is “Rhythm on the Rhine” A cute little Powers Model is Dorothy Chance. Marva Adkins is away—shopping in France! Dixie Geddes, a school teacher—(had to get one in somewhere!) Pat Timken is still the most popular and fair. James Matthews has stolen Joe Louis’s title. Billie McDaniel Loghry will soon give a recital. An interior decorator is Virginia Haines. Bill Mancillas is experimenting on “How to Improve Brains.” Billie Teten’s employed as midget of Barnum Bailey. Marie Crosiant, Reporter on the “All-News Daily.” Rosa Lee is very proud of her pure bred Spitz. Mary Ellen, a fortune-teller, known as Madam Zitz. Joyce Jones, in Hollywood is a star! Bill Chalmers was finally admitted to the bar. Verna, Mary Osburn, Imogene, and Eva Mae Make up the U. S. Quartette—music they convey! Anna Ruth, charming hostess for Quick-Trip Airlines. Doris Reed is head of a big soup company (Heinz) While Phylis Ayers is chief librarian at the Carnegie, Virgil’s in jail for owing his Senior Class Fee. Bonnie Reynolds is a well-known seamstress for Trego’s While Mildred Perrin models the latest nylon hose. Harold Lowrey auctioneers (going, going, gone.) on Hit Parade And for her poor health, Ellen Crane drinks Kool-Aid! Wanita now has twins of her own,— That’s why Bonita works in Wanitas home. Ronald Glaze ushers at “The Big Bijou” And Mary Meyer was in the last “Who’s Who.” Then I opened my eyes—there I made a mistake! For I didn’t get to see what Lou Dan Ogden would make. The class of ’48 gone on before— As the “man in the moon” softly closed the door. Composed of twenty-four students picked by the faculty from a list of all interested, it was subdivided into three groups of eight, which gave programs over our local radio station, KSIW. Each week one group gave a program. Sponsored by the assistant manager of KSIW, Mr. Harry Van Slycke, and two members of our school faculty, Miss Estella Sherrill and Mr. Clifford Kinney, the groups received valuable assistance from the staff of KSIW. The groups were given a choice of length of time, date, at type of program. Although the groups used some prepared programs distributed by the Mutual Broadcasting System, with which KSIW is affiliated, many of the programs were the work of the students, with the valuable assistance of Mr. Van Slycke. The radio staff gave the groups much instruction in announcing, script writing, directing, and a few of the rudiments of radio engineering. Woodward High School is very fortunate in having a radio station so near, and in having such valuable and co-operative personnel. We wish to thank Mr. Van Slycke, Mr. Kinney, and Miss Sherrill for the co-oparation and the valuable instruction they have given us, and for their time and understanding. The Girls’ Quartette and Sextette were “on call” for furnishing numbers for clubs and organizations since early last fall when they were organized. They appeared before civic groups, women’s clubs, P. T. A. groups, in various churches, on our assembly programs, and were heard over KSIW. We want to thank Mrs. Frank Rogers, the director, for giving so much of her time and energy to making these groups a success. After dropping two games the Boomers chalked up their second win by downing the Shattuck Indians 19-6. The Boomers traveled to Cherokee the next week to meet the Jet Tigers. Three times in the first half the Boomers penetrated deep into the Tigers territory but were unable to score. Bob Potter, big Tiger fullback, hit his peak as he rammed over for three tallies and a conversion to give the Tigers their margin of victory. Next on the list for the Boomers were the Railroaders from Waynoka, who were derailed, after a stubborn contest, 14-6. Tackles Eldred “Tiger” Smith and Cecil Allison stood out on defense for the Boomers. football The Boomers opened their 1947 season at home against the Guymon Tigers. After a scoreless first half the Boomers romped over the boys from Guymon 19-0 with Dean Seeman scoring three touchdowns. The following week the highly-rated Maroons from Cherokee, sparked by All-State back Dick McCaffree, out-scored the Boomers 32-19. Jim Pollock, right guard, received a broken leg early in the first quarter of this bruising contest. The Boomers then took to the road to engage the Anadarko Warriors. Lyman Nichols led the Warriors past the Boomers 19-0. Raymond Ubranzo, All-State guard, was a standout on defense for the Anadarko club. The Boomers then ventured to Watonga to play the 15-B conference champions. The Eagles clipped the locals by the score of 23-0. Captain Claude Beck moved from his guard position to the backfield and made a very creditable showing, averaging 7 yards every time he carried the ball. The Boomers returned home for the final two games of the season with Alva the foe for the traditional homecoming game. An inspired Boomer team battled the Goldbugs to a 14-14 deadlock, but the Goldbugs won on penetrations. Back J. T. McLain threw a 50 yard pass to end Evan Reynolds for one of the Boomer touchdowns. In the closing game of the 1947 season, the Boomers met the powerful Fairview Yellow jackets who were defending the State Championship title from the previous year. The Yellowjackets pounded out a 32-7 decision. Backs, Wally Roundtree, Bill Eubanks, and Willis Majors and All-State Center Lonnie Keck, proved too much for the Boomers to master. The Yellowjackets went on to the semi-finals in the state play-offs where they were defeated by the Dewey Bulldogs, present state champions, 13-7. Claude Beck, Boomer Captain, was unanimously chosen for all-conference guard. Basketball Bottom Row, Left to Right: Coach John Provost, J. T.
