The use of mathematics is not limited to the everyday experiences of buying goods, balancing check books, and following recipes. In a world of computers, space tech- nology, and architectural design, mathematics plays an increasingly important role. To better prepare the student, the mathematics department strives to develop within him the ability to use deductive and inductive reasoning to investigate, interpret, and make decisions regarding solutions. In order to communicate the language of mathe- matics with precision, the student obtains a more thorough understanding of graphs, equations, formulas, sets and their related functions. Woodward's excellent computer system is often used in the advanced courses. This year's addition of quarter elective courses in logic and mechani- cal drawing has further strengthened the department. The Social Studies department encour- ages students to become active citizens who are aware of the worth of the in- dividual in a free society, and of the necessity for relations with all people. It teaches an appreciation of contribu- tions which past cultures have made. The curriculum begins with cultural an- thropological studies concentrating on how man came to develop a civilization. Cultures are studied with the conviction that experiences of the past repeat or influence the culture of the present and of the future. f A more extensive analysis of compo- nents of the social studies is offered to luniors and Seniors. This year the Social Studies department offers one quarter courses in accounting, foreign policy, Comparitive European governments, and self-economics. 36fACADEMlCS WAND F Uri :fx souram, ,MMM D - Asra 'I -s...
