Convinced that the basic skills in a correlated study of language, composi- tion, and literature are necessary for a sound college preparatory program, the English Department continued in 1974 to establish new courses and to restructure old ones. While juniors and Seniors began choosing quarter elective courses such as Destiny and Decision, Creative Writing, and Shakespearean Tragedy, seventh graders found themselves using a humani- ties approach: an integration of art and music with literature and composition. ,??MMM g,g..,v ,.-rf' With the continued participation of Americans in world affairs, it is essential that man be able to communicate in a foreign language - not only as a matter of personal, but also of national interest. The Woodward Academy foreign language program combines speaking, reading, and writing skills, and, at the same time, increases a student's awareness of literature and concepts of a culture. The department offers four foreign languages to interested students: French, German, Spanish, and Latin. This year the language department has introduced in the seventh grade regular French I and Spanish I courses to be covered in two years. The department has also opened to capable eighth grade students the regular level I courses in all foreign languages. Foreign study and exchange programs further enhance the curriculum. 28fACADEMlCS
