Possessing a firm but gentle man- ner, Captain William R. Brewster possesses the unique quality of being a dedicated educator and a sound businessman in planning and overseeing the present and future of Woodward Academy. Having been a student, a teacher, and an administrator when Wood- ward was Georgia Military Academy enables President Brewster to con- tinue the sound objectives of the past and simultaneously to meet the demands of an independent school in a contemporary setting. He and the Governing Board have indeed continued a long standing tradition of sustaining Woodward Academy as one of the outstanding independent schools in the South. Captain Brewster's leadership and sincere interests in the Academy have gained him the respect and confidence of students, faculty, par- ents, and alumni. 20fADMINlSTRATlON HEADMASTER Mr. james R. McDowell Teacher, Priest, and Friend, Mr. james R. McDowell is responsible for the day-to-day activities at the Academy. Since his appointment in 1973, numerous innovations have been made in the curriculum and activities at Woodward: elective courses, the Student Interest Pro- gram, the furthering of the Middle School concept, and the increased interest and participation in the Fine Arts. Mr. McDowell's enthusiasm for planning a sound college prepara- tory curriculum has resulted in fac- ulty and students planning creative and exciting courses and programs. Possessing a deep respect for tra- dition, he has revamped convoca- tions, baccalaureate, and graduation in such a manner that he has in- creased in students and faculty ap- preciation for the traditional and the contemporary. A 2 .QQ-2 15 1 Convinced that the basic skills in a correlated study of language, composi- tion, and literature are necessary for a sound college preparatory program, the English Department continued in 1974 to establish new courses and to restructure old ones. While juniors and Seniors began choosing quarter elective courses such as Destiny and Decision, Creative Writing, and Shakespearean Tragedy, seventh graders found themselves using a humani- ties approach: an integration of art and music with literature and composition. The Woodward Academy foreign language program combines speaking, reading, and writing skills, and, at the same time, increases a student's awareness of literature and concepts of a culture. The department offers four foreign languages to interested students: French, German, Spanish, and Latin. This year the language department has introduced in the seventh grade regular French I and Spanish I courses to be covered in two years. The department has also opened to capable eighth grade students the regular level I courses in all foreign languages. Foreign study and exchange programs further enhance the curriculum. 28fACADEMlCS Y ,, ..,, W VVK, 53. i . 1 fi is FOREIGN LANGUAGE A qui se habla espanol Many have slipped 'twixt the cup and the lip Il faut de la discipline Ubersetzen Sie, bitte iacta alia est . . . Early science courses at Woodward introduce the concepts of matter, motion, and energy through direct student experience with microscopic bodies. Latter courses such as biology, chemistry, and physics develop tech- niques which allow the student to investigate not only in the classroom situation but also independently at home. ln all courses the students ability to think abstractly, to draw conclusions, and to design new experiments is further developed. Significant changes in the curriculum this year include courses in marine biology, geology, and project physics. Advanced Placement Chemistry was also offered again this year. 32fACADEMICS fi 1 'B 231-- ' QQ 51' 19 qawfvi N' 4 A XL The use of mathematics is not limited to the everyday experiences of buying goods, balancing check books, and following recipes. In a world of computers, space tech- nology, and architectural design, mathematics plays an increasingly important role. To better prepare the student, the mathematics department strives to develop within him the ability to use deductive and inductive reasoning to investigate, interpret, and make decisions regarding solutions. In order to communicate the language of mathe- matics with precision, the student obtains a more thorough understanding of graphs, equations, formulas, sets and their related functions. Woodward's excellent computer system is often used in the advanced courses. This year's addition of quarter elective courses in logic and mechani- cal drawing has further strengthened the department. It teaches an appreciation of contribu- tions which past cultures have made. The curriculum begins with cultural an- thropological studies concentrating on how man came to develop a civilization. Cultures are studied with the conviction that experiences of the past repeat or influence the culture of the present and of the future. f A more extensive analysis of compo- nents of the social studies is offered to luniors and Seniors. This year the Social Studies department offers one quarter courses in accounting, foreign policy, Comparitive European governments, and self-economics. 36fACADEMlCS WAND F Uri :fx souram, ,MMM D - Asra 'I -s... Students wishing to board only during weekdays were classified as Five Day Boarders. Seven Day Boarders were placed in refurbished rooms in Rugby and Woodward Halls. Air conditioning, shag carpets, and new furniture made dorm life more comfortable. Also added were planned weekend trips to athletic and cultural events in Atlanta. Such improvements, however, did not sup- plant the pleasure of an afternoon nap, rap sessions, or the routine activities of clean- ing house or going to class. a-Hs.-K-5-we-J' I Y ca, . DORM LlFEf129 S.l.P. One of the newly instituted programs this year was the STUDENT INTEREST PROGRAM, better known as SIP. Its purpose was to allow students to expand their knowledge of specific vocations and life in general. A four week program, SIP provided experiences not avail- able in a formal classroom situation. Each Senior was re- sponsible for finding an organization or business and com- pleting weekly evaluations concerning his progress. Some students worked in law offices, hospitals, and retail busi- nesses while others assisted in special schools and the Atlanta Volunteer Action tutoring program. The HONOR COUNCIL at Woodward Academy con- sists of elected student government of- ficers who have the responsibility of deal- ing with honor violations, this body is the judicial Branch of our student go- vernment. The Honor Council offers the student the opportunity to be tried by his peers, it does not, however, replace the regular system of discipline at the Academy. The Randolph W. Thrower Chapter of the NATIONAL HONOR SOClETY is composed of juniors and Seniors. High academic achievement is not the only basis for admission, students are also chosen for thier integrity, involvement in school activities, and ability to get along with fellow students. The National Honor Society is not considered a service club. Each year, however, it sponsors an event in which both students and faculty parti- cipate. This year the faculty defeated the Seniors in a bruising football match, pro- ceeds being donated to charity. HONOR SOClETYf'l43 v. ...va ,..... Q Q.. . Chess and Photography 1972 and 1973 State champions, the CHESS CLUB plays not only high school but also college students. An individual as well as a team sport, chess has become an active group under the direction of Mr. john Abernathy. Organized this year, the PHO- TOGRAPHY CLUB members learned new methods of taking pictures. Each month a contest was held and the best pictures selected. Advised by Mr. Roy Brady, the club aided both the VORPAL BLADE and PHOENIX staffs. More emphasis has been placed on informing the student than entertaining him. Members of the Mass Media course often relay to stu- dents, via the television network, news highlights and interesting tidbits of in- formation. The WATV station also enables the administration to make announce- ments, and student body officers to speak ofupcoming school events. THE VORPAL BLADE achieved this with great successl Published monthly, the newspaper also contained editorials and articles on music, personalities, and events in Atlanta. The reader was even of- fered a theme to be used in emergency situations, written by an unknown Hharried English student. Greatly responsible for the increased popularity of the Vor al Blade were its co-editors - Renee Ruppers urg and Chris Swenson - who, with the staff, worked many nights to insure a school newspaper enjoyed by all. The PHOENIX STAFF worked hard to recreate the school year 1973-1974. As Editor, Carla Berry spent hours in organizing the yearbook, scheduling photography sessions, and working to meet dead- lines. Rusty Slider, Assistant Editor, worked closely with her in checking minute details. Mary Alice Cantrell worked in designing many of the layouts. Because of his efficiency in organization, Brink Dickerson was appointed Business Manager. Since the '74 book stressed copy, Meg Campbell created and assigned copy for various sections. Trudy Cathy and Debbie Walker planned the sports section and obtained copy and group rolls from coaches. Robbie Federlein served as official photographer. The results of lengthy work sessions, the '74 PHOE- NIX portrays the four schools that compose the Academy. The staff has its memories: the Rock Eagle planning conference, Margaret's Christmas present fan eraserj, Mrs. Berry's coffee cakes, Mr. Stock- hammer's wonderful lectures, details about Mary Alice's latest boyfriends, and Carla's new car, the staff party, and most of all - the yearbook itself. Campfield In a large Academy, there are often those indi- viduals who are genuinely concerned and dedicated to their tasks, but because of the nature of their assignments, they work quietly in the background making invaluable contributions. Therefore, the 1974 PHOENIX Staff wishes to initiate a tribute to such individuals at Woodward. For giving over forty years of his life and love to Woodward Acad- emy, the PHOENIX Staff proudly and lovingly pre- sents the first PHOENIX TRIBUTE to Mr. A.C. Camp- field. Having been the chief engineer for the Acad- emy, he has supervised either the construction or refurbishing of virtually every building on the campus. A soft-spoken man, Mr. Campfield has continued after his recent retirement to support Woodward at athletic and cultural events. His dedi- cation to his work and his outstanding Christian example has endeared him to the hundreds of students, faculty and alumni who have had the privilege to know him. l PHOENIX TRlBUTEf289 0 it Wu naw H Wt 5 Q. x MN x Q Mai vw' 1': Za , - iff' .A 'WL ' - 1. .
