X f ggi? 5' if-l X 5 lv . 3 '11 H -' l qi, if .A - LV jj N J. xx I l 1 I Al! x I it x Izmtor M s ltmx Xlxxumr rszdent XX Il ll t rr I it I rr dent Rxuu ouxsox Setrrtary I Llltlil-TH Corrs lnzzszm r R xx uown li XT ILI The high school orchestra had a late start th1s year because of the absence of a director But w1th the arrival of Miss New hart they soon got 1nto their old stride Being a member of the orchestra re quires a great d al of t1me and practlce The orchestra meets three times a week Besides this the members spend a great deal of time in individual practice It 1S doubtful whether anyone who has never played a musical instrument reallzes all of the work involved in presenting a finished orchestral performance Not a little of the work 1S done by the director who must coordinate the work of each 1nd1v1dual into one harmon lous whole Those who are not orchestra members formance The orchestra plays for almost all the school assemblies lt also makes its appearance at the Iunior and Senior plays where it provides music for the audience lhmlor Nlus Guxcr R Ross nszduzt XXILLIXNX tr T lm I 1'LSlt!L1lf RALH1 jonwsow Secretary Xxx l0sT1:R Irezszmr RLTH I Errlr This year under the leadershlp of Mrs Ross the school band has advanced from a rather haphazard collection of instruments to a real ensemble of whlch the school may well be proud Although many outstand mg players graduated last year by d1l1gent practice and effort on the part of both the director and the students many of the re Stllllflq gaps in the mstrumentation have been competently filled by younger players Thls was proved by the Spring Concert which was given on March 19 for a crowd of three hundred people Not only did the entire band perform well but also the in d1v1dual soloists scored a hlt Many people considered this concert one of the outstand ing musical accomplishments of the depart ment The program was designed to dis before and after the play and also between the acts The orchestra IS promment also at Commencement t1me for it plays for the Baccalaureate Service and for Commence ment Besides these performances 1t also takes an important part in the Mus1c Fes tival which is presented 1n May and which always proves to be Just what 1ts name implies Membership 1n the orchestra not only gives a student the chance to learn and to enter tain himself and others but 1t also carries with 1t some material reward At the end of the year orchestra members receive recog nition in a speclal assembly program where they are given their awards Thos who have served in the orchestra for two years receive attractlve letters 1n the shape of a lyre Those who have been members for four years receive an onyx pm We hope that the orchestra w1ll con tinue to functlon as a very vltal part of our school and that many new members will ly no better way in whlch a person can pro vide enloyment for himself and others than to be able to express hlmself IH the universal language and play the ab1l1ty and versatlllty of the band personnel It was amb1t1ous 1n scope and delrghted the audience who recelved it very enthusiastically The same hlgh standard of performance was upheld by the band wh n lt gave an excellent performance at the Muslc Festival 1n May ln thls recital lt shared honors with various other groups from the muslc d part ment The members of the band are also proud of the fact that they partlclpat d 1n the Com munity Hallowe en Parade and played f r the Community Christmas Slng held at the TIS mas tree in the Center of town Both of these Community functlons were mnovatlons and may well become permanent opportunities for the band to contribute dlrectly to com munity life Although some players w1ll be lost by graduat1on the band hopes to keep up the good work when the time to meet agaln rolls around 1n September IV' 1 rs l'rf A 1 ' ...AA l,: 'I'I'l' . We lost the second game with Glassboro l9-42. Next we played the Alumni losing 44 to 40. We lost both games to Pitman, Tri-County champions, 22-36 and 18-38. We also lost both games to Penns Grove 30-42 and 20-65. We beat Swedesboro the frrst game 42 40 but lost the second 22 36 We trounced St lames 509 We lost both games to Clayton 25 33 and 1319 Salem played us rn two practice games They won the first 26 37 but Woodstown won the second 28 24 Woodstown was hindered by the loss of George Piper one of the best players Woodstown ever had. George was high scorer in the five games he played. He left Woodstown to go into the Navy before the season was half over. George Piper was the captain until he left after which Robert Shoemaker served as captain for the rest of the year. The high scorer was George Piper with 86 points. Robert Shoemaker was second with 72, Clarence Flitcraft was third with 68, lack Fithian fourth with 46.
