' Published By The Annual Staff of WOODSTOCK HIGH SCHOOL Woodstock, Virginia F0ltEW0ltll To Woodstock High School, where we had our first literary adventures, this, The Pillar of 1956, pays tribute. In this atomic age we should be aware of the many happy hours spent in the halls of W. H. S., for what lies ahead we do not know. The members of the annual staff leave the pleasant memories of hours spent together in compiling this book of pictorial souvenirs. May you,'our readers, get as much satisfaction out of reading this edition of The Pillar as we have had in producing it. IIEIIIIJATIO Z ,lf .23 W . 'Wiki-tzrsili , '-'. ii. '..-. smrxigfx-z KK 2 J ' We, the annual staff, dedicate the 1956 edition of The Pillar to our school librarian, Miss Margaret Magruder, We are greatly in- debted to her for having enriched our culture and knowledge through her untiring energy and enthusiasm, No amount of words can express the deep feelings and sincere gratitude the seniors have for her as a librarian and as a friend. In dedicating the 1956 annual to Miss Magruder, we are mere- ly acknowledging - not repaying - our large debt of gratitude and ap- preciation to a great librarian, a splendid lady, and a friend whom we shall long remember. f THE PRI CIPAL' MESSAGE As a group you have done well. You have been unselfish in giving of your time and talents, and one rarely finds so many hard working, conscientious, students in one class. Some of you have spent more out of school hours here in this building than any students that I have ever known. Your school has served you as a laboratory in human relations where you have commenced the art of getting along with people. As you continue to meet all kinds of people on both the social and the professional level, try ever to get along with these people. Some of you have not fully made the Golden Rule a par' of your way of life. Your success and your happiness will depend, to a very great extent, upon your ability to get along with people and to put this great prin ciple into practice. Learn early in life to appreciate the good in art, science, music, people and religion. A knowledge of these will not necessarily make your life complete, bi this knowledge will help you develop character. If you acquire character, faith, health, and knowledge, what more does a man need? At intervals many more joined in with the class and together all pushed and pulled their way through the next I2 adventurous years far- ther up the ladder. In their struggle upward a few slipped out, and of the 41 in the class now only I7 are original members: namely Paul Dellinger, Deanna Fravel Clinedinst, Sarah Emswiller, Mary - Feagans, Billy Grabill, Jo Anne Hire, Nancy Kib- ler, Carroll Lambert, Gerald Miller, Nancy Peer, Patricia Shiley, Bobby Stultz, Betty Tisinger, Jean Vaughn, Dannie Warner, Donnie Warner, and Shir- ley Wilkins. Among the many highlights of the grade school years, the trip to Gettysburg, Pennsy- lvania, during the sixth grade, was the most out- standing. Then there was the first class president, Jimmy Peer, in the seventh grade. Of course, with every cup of joy there comes a touch of sadness. Such was the case in the eighth grade when the class was divided into two sections. Though some had to separate from old classmates the sorrow was short lived when new friendships proved happy ones. Mrs. Bragg Moyer and Mr. Roger Casseday were class sponsors, and Farrell Bumer was elected presi- dent. Everyone recalls the confusion he had in learning class schedules. Then came the next big step, --FRESHMEN. Miss Margaret Grabill and Reverend Backmann were the homeroom teachers, and the following officers were elected: Jane Lineweaver, presidentg Gerald Miller, vice president, Mary Feagans, secretary, and Jimmy Peer, treasurer. We climbed another giant step up the ladder as SOPHOMORES. Jean Vaughn was presiding officer with Prentis Smiley as veep g Mary Fea- gans, secretary: and Peggy Ludwig, treasurer. Ahl That was a year of proud memoriesg Nancy Cloude won the school spelling contest, and Jean Vaughn and Mary Feagans were on the District L Girls' Basketball Championship Team. Sponsors for that year were Mrs. Eunice Morrison and Mr. D. P, Hughes. One more step and the class became JUN - IORS CWhewl Those steps get steeper each timej. This was the year when one of the most memorable events of all the school years took placeg the jol- ly juniors tramped all over Richmond, Yorktown, and Jamestown during the pilgrimage to Williams- burg. The class play, The Whole Truth , proved a financial success. The juniors entertained the seniors at Dorothy's Inn. Probably the most out- standing meeting that President Nancy Peer presided over this year was the ordering of class rings. Miss Grabill and Miss Doris Lam were home-room teachers. All too soon this year came, and Farrell Bur- ner was chosen to lead the SENIORS through their last year of school. The other senior officers elected were vice president, Donnie Warner, secretary, Patricia Shileyg treasurer, Nancy Peer, parliamentarian, Shirley Wilkins and reporter, Nancy Kibler. The class, not as large as it had been, became one whole group again with Miss Grabill as sponsor for the third year. The student body elected Mary Feagans as president of the Student Council, and Dannie War- ner was editor of School Daze Sarah Emswiller and Farrell Bumer were elected permanent class re- porters while Jo Anne Hite was chosen assistant ed- itor of The Custers' Last Stand , presented in No- vember, was expertly directed by Mr. J. J. Sperry. Another big event in this month was the ordering of the calling cards and invitations. One of the biggest weeks in the lives of the seniors came the last week in May when they were inspired by the Baccalaureate Sermon delivered by Reverend Kenneth Bishop. They will remember the laughter of class night and the tears of sadness and joy as they received their diplomas on Commencement night. After reviewing the past 12 years the class feels Yesterday is past, tomorrow is ahead, only today is ours. Yes, now the seniors have climbed thus far up the ladder but are only in the middle, What lies ahead no one knows, The class will be satisfied if the future is as rewarding as the past, It is the hope of the graduates that the underclass- men will have as happy and cherished a climb as they have had. This document signed and sealed WITNESS QAXWVAFA TESTATRIX aj I'Il0Pllll0Y This is WSTK coming to you from the new Shenandoah County C onsolida ted I-li gh School. Ten years after graduation the members of the class of '56 are now having their reunion. To- night as I look around in this vast auditorium I see many of my classmates with their large fam- ilies. Most of them have become nationally known in their chosen fields. I, Farrell Bumer, was chosen by the class of '56 to act as master of ceremonies tonight. probably because I own a chain of radio stations. With me are Jane and our family of five children. Becky Patton, who has her own T. V. show called A Blab With Becky, states that she has been standin in for Red Skelton. Paul Dellinger, Ph. D., who has flown in from Cambridge University, says he has re- cently made a very unusual discovery ------ - - MARS IS INHABITEDI Home Economics teacher, Pat Shiley, has just won S2 3, ooo in a nationally known Betty Crocker cake contest. She plans to put the dough toward her wedding. Jo Anne Hite, R. N. , Superintendent of Nurses at Texas State Hospital, was unable to be here. She's nursing the President of the U. S. Owning an eleven hundred acre farm and discovering a new method of crop rotation for beans is the successful farmer, Elton Riffee. Secretary to the Vice President of the U. S. is Sarah Emswiller, who was the first per- son to break the custom of resigning when a dif- ferent party gets in office. Coaching the West Point cadets to their sixth straight basketball championship is Don Warner. President of the Virginia City Service and Oil Co, is Bill Grabill, a business tycoon. The Hollar twins, Peggy and Patsy, have done quite well in the entertaining field. Their recent song, I Didn 't Know, was quite a hit. I spoke to the former Miss W. H. S, , now Mrs. Deanna Clinedinst, and she said that she and her family are living in Pittsburgh, Pa. The world famous geologist, Jim Lag- odzinski, is present tonight. Jim is responsible for a new mineral, Zinski. The largest automobile company in the nation, B Sr L Chevrolet sales, is managed by Gary Bowers and Carroll Lambert. Receiving a 365, ooo contract from the Coca Cola Company is the commercial artist, Mary Feagans. Trooper Dannie Warner, who is noted for his tact in dealing with criminals, was unable to be here due to a colossal prison break in Richmond. Seeing inside things at Johns Hopkins Hos- pital is X-Ray technician, Jean Vaughn. Serving in the same hospital with Jean is Nancy Kibler, Superintendent of Nurses. Bachelors James Peer and Douglas I-lottle have just completed a big job at the Panama Canal. Working and rearing her family of three girls and three boys, the former Betty Tisinger is very busy. Here tonight with their sets of twins are the former Mary Jane Tucker and Shirley Wilkins. A famous figure is Bonny Orndorff, whose recent discovery is a cancer vaccine which has saved millions of lives. Tonight I find the former Jessica Funkhouser and Vera Funk with nine and twelve children respec- tively. Both are successful housewives in Florida. Gerald Miller, a former player at W.H.S., is now coaching the UCLA baseball team. The former Margie Kibler, Arlene Racey, Mary Eppard, and Mrs. Shirley Helsley, success- ful housewives, all now live on the same street in Staunton, Virginia . A famous paratrooper in the marines is Ga- len Eastep, recipient of the Bronze Star for the high- est jump in enemy territory. Also air bound is Peggy Ludwig, airline host- ess of Washington, D. C. Bobby Stultz, formerly a small garage me- chanic, now owns a large auto parts manufacturing company. His private secretaries are Nancy Peer and Ralph George. Patsy Bemis, nationally renowned for her new method of teaching the alphabet, is now IIISUUCY ing at the Horace Mann School in New York. Nancy Cloude, a famous business woman, is planning to marry the heir to the Buick Company. Concluding my interviews with the class of '56, I find Ailon Linaweaver has made a success- ful career in nursing. Certainly the members have lived up to their motto, Yesterday is past, tomorrow is ahead , only today is ours. I'm sure you 'll agree with me that the class of '56 has aided in the growth of knowledge in this generation. This is WSTK signing off for tonight. Be sure to tune in again in ten years when the famous class of '56 will hold another reunion. Written by: Sarah Emswiller Kc Don Wamer 22 55. iuniurs 4 f . .
