Not only has he been our English l03CllG'I' for two years, hut also our counselor, guide, and friend. Through our junior and senior class plays we have seen his ready hand. He has most certainly contributed his link in our education of the fine arts. Now we shall place him in our locket of memories. 6 jridufe . . . To Ole,-our very bestest friend,-always teasing, twinkling, chuckling, understanding. defending, scolding. praising, yet requiring perfection. His soft spoken words drove home spikes of knowledge. His quiet and constant efforts secured many things for others. such as the Interloehen scholarships. His many other accomplishments speak for themselves. as did his high ideals. Some may remember him as the shy lad. who hated playing in a jazz hand, hut did. so he could further his musical education. But he never let anyone see his own problems. We all feel privileged to have known Clarence Olson. for to know him was to love him. Vile classify him as a great man. and like a great man. he was never fully appreciated. hut he will never he forgotten. it eg of J l'l0lfUA6!g0 t I G Q ,, U A ..,.,. Our facility are not only indispensable to 11s but also to the community. for many are engaged in activities outside of their regular school responsibilities. The many civic and fraternal organizations claim many of our staFf as members. some are oflicers. Church work, Hospital Auxiliary, and the County Panhellenic have many active teachers in their numbers. Although busy with their personal lives. and above- named organizations, they somehow find time to belong to the IEA. and NEA. Several teachers hold executive positions in these organizations. Most all of them have special professional organizations in their own fields to which they belong. The fall witnesses the coming of the IEA divisional meeting in Aurora, which our faculty attends. while MCI-lenry County Institute is held at WCHS in the winter. Special days are few, and it's the hours spent in the classroom. working with the student. and the conferences with parent and student that make up a smooth running administration. They do. however. take time off occasionally to relaxsat a Kolfee- Klotch after school. or a tea with the other schools. T MISS .IICANINIC CZARNEQZKI. BA.. BS.. l..S. University ol Indiana. In memory of our fellow classmate and friend PHILIP BECK who passed away in January I 954. enior Cfafid .xlzlidfor As we entered WCHS one fall day in 1950. a new phase of school life began for the class of l954. Uur first year in the big red brick building at the top of the hill was a new. different. and exciting experience. Now we look upon our freshman year as a joyous one. First of all. we think of Freshman Wieck--all of the Hallahs -carrying of books-and many other humiliating things. Mike Hall was elected president. Ellaric Shaw and Sue Hecht were our candidates for Home- coming queen. Our Homecoming float received honorable mention. which was good. we thought, for our first try! As sophomores our class gained recognition when we elected our first woman president. Helen Abbott! Sue Hecht and Pat Crone were our charming Home- coming candidates. Also. our float won top honors. Thus. with a feather in our caps. we put our efforts into our 'GGay Farce Jubilee. Pat Crone was our striking queen. The boys took their turn at royalty when Ken Gustafson was crowned King at the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Hy the lime we were juniors we were exhibiting our many ambitions and virtues. Howard Gibson was our president during this busy year. Again. our float captured the blue ribon. Nancy Stock and Charlotte Hunt were our charming Homecoming queen candidates. We selected a more modern way of earning money for our Prom. Under the direction of Mr. Edwards. we presented three one- act plays. The lovely queen of our Star Dust Prom was Charlotte Hunt. In sports, as juniors. Jerry Curtright and LaVern Emricson made the first team in North Suburban All Conference Football. 1953 witnessed the forming of a hilarious group of girls banded together in a Fife, Jug, Bottle Band. Another group of musicians formed a jazz combo. During all four years, a group of eight girls have been very busy in a choral ensemble. Jackie Urth and Joanna Larsen received scholar- ships to Interlochen. while Audree Asmus, Pat Crone, and Michael Hall each received a scholar- ship for the summer music workshop at Madison. Wisconsin. Delegates for Boys State were: Bob Thurow, Jerry Curtright. Howard Gibson. LaVern Emricson. Lee Stewart. Dave Nelson. Ken Gustaf- son and Mike Hall. This year Nancy Stock reigned as Homecoming queen, while Ellarie Shaw was her senior attendant. Our float. G'We'll Crack 'Emfi received second place. Since Guy Curtright, former Blue and White coach, resigned before baseball season started, Coach Bob Menke led the Streaks to victory with his fine coaching and winning spirit. The Streaks won 9 and lost 3 in conference play and were the only team to beat Barrington two times. ln one of the games against them, the Streaks pulled a timely triple play that won the game. In non-conference competition. the Blue Streaks won the Sub District and District to find themselves only two games from the state tour- nament. but lost to Elgin in the finals of the sec- tional. Jim l-lansmann. rookie outhelder for the Streaks, surprised everyone and led the leaguers with .4-62 and his team with a .354 average. The Streaks also had two of the finest pitchers in the league, Bob Selchow and Gene Martine. LaVern Emricson led the team in home runs with 3. Jerry Curtright showed his heels to the oppo- sition ix ith l2 stolen bases. He also drew the most bases on balls. with l9. The team's batting, 259, was the lowest in the past three seasons. Altogether, Woodstock High School had a won- derful season, and the prospects for next year's team look good, with seven lettermen returning. icffera RATTING AVERAGE .L Playa-r AB R H RRI Hansma llrl ,....... 4 8 12 17 9 Martine .,,,, .,.,.... 5 8 9 19 12 Salma. ........, ........ 6 2 12 20 l3 Curtright ........ 53 15 15 10 Mm-Ca II11 on ........ 62 15 17 3 PITCHING Player H RR SO ERA W Marti xxx- .. .......,. 61 l 6 443 2.9 l 7 Selcliow ...,..,.. 73 2l 67 1.62 6 VARSITY CONFERENCE SCORES Apr. 7 ..................
