The most significant aspect was being able to serve as president of the class throughout high school. I enjoyed my years in high school not so much as the course work, but the activities that 1 was involved in. Memorable experiences in the past four years have been my changes as a profes- sional. Until Mr. Troy came, I was director of guidance, administration, and special education. I wore many hats. Key Moments . .. M rs. Mary Belden Mr. Robert Thompson A memorable moment from high school was when the principal stopped meJn the hall and told me to get a haitcut But I had just gotten one! My memory from the Academy is of my first study hall in Room 100 with 60 students-UGH! Mr. William Emerson Past r And Present 'll Math My memorable high school moment was my graduation from Stonington High School. There have been many key mo- ments for me at Woodstock Academy. The one that sticks out in my mind is when we beat Putnam High at home in basketball 1984. The gym was full and you couldn't even hear yourself think. We beat them by 5 points. It was great. I'll never forget it! I Mr. Clifford Spelman My outstanding accomplishment in high school was graduating with a class rank of 10 in a class of 300. I was selected to attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. My outstanding achievement at the Academy has been the establishment of a varsity boys and girls tennis team. Both teams finished with a winning record in their initial season, 1986. Mr. Royal Hale Library My memorable moment from high school was getting asked to the Griswold High senior prom. I will always remember when my son was born on April 15, 1983. I went to Mrs. St. Jean's class and nervously asked if I could borrow a student to cover the library so I could take my wife to the hospital. That after- noon, my son was born! 87 English Mr. Robert Kirk Dr. Robert Smith State Debating Cham- team was nearly unde- arrow margin at the end found the plays pro- duced by the Academy Theater artistically sat- isfying, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream . He describes the recent musicals Something in the Air and The Music Man as atomic. s: Key Moments Miss Karen Nissen Art And Music My key moment in high school was when 1 was selected to represent my school at an All-Eastern music festival. My best moment at Woodstock Academy was when I conducted my first Christmas concert and it was a success! Mrs. Kathryn Sargent In high school Mrs. Sargent won the state prize for her civics es- say and received $10. A lot of her school ac- tivities were cut be- cause of WW 11. It 88 preoccupied every- one The addition of Geography to the Academy's curricu- lum was an impor- tant moment for her. f Mr. Robert Beckwith Mrs. Susan Goodwin Languages An important moment for me in high school was when I was select- ed as head checrleadei for the varsi- ty squad. At £tJatdoTe y, it was teachers in the state of Connecticut to receive the Excellence in Teach- ing Award (1985). High school memories for Ms. Domijan were the trip to France, participating in the musicals, and game because of her foul the Academy, she will re- asketball •A winning a shot that we „ memberjihc trips to Quebec and Paris with her students and the Arts Weekend activities. Past And Presen t Physical Education 89 Mrs. Lois Siegmund Vf Mrs. Siegmund S mon high school sweetheart ments with her rt are those most memorable to her. The two dated throughout high school, went on to college, and later married! One of my memorable moments is the retire- ment of our high school (the oldest in New England) in my freshman year. A memory from the Academy is the summer bike trip that was taken to Montreal. Key Moments . . . Vocational Education My key moment in high school was graduating first in my class. My important moments at Woodstock Academy were last year, when some of my seniors told me they had been wor- ried about getting a new teacher for Calculus and Physics, but that now that 1 was here, they were glad I'd come. When Mrs. Becker moved from a small school in Canada to a large one in N.Y., she was amazed at the ignorance Ameri- can students had of Canada. Mrs. Becker believes the success of her F.P.S. teams in the nation- al competitions reflects the high quality of education students re- ceive at W.A. Mrs. Teresa Becker One of my saddest moments was the explosion of my experimental solid fuel rocket on the roof of Madison High School. All three Antronauts were killed during the attempted launch. Almost the en- tire school heard of the destruction of my Science Fair Project. Mrs. Carol Keller Mr. Daniel Gill 90 Mrs. Shirley Patten Mr. Glenn Anderson History Mr. William Taylor Mr Taylor went through grammar school and most of high school no knowing how jread His most memorable high school its were spent with a teacher who urHi cared enough to teach him how to read. Mr. Taylor's best moments at the Academy are when former students return. He says Nothing can match that feeling when they express thanks and gratitude for all they have learned from him . . Past And Present PCT 1 Mrs. Patricia Harrington i I hr important moment in Mr Mar-land - 7 .I, pa-t was graduating from college The A ff' • ighligt : a reer at Wood-tuck A. a Jr my was acquiring the computers. Mr. David Marsland Mrs. Harrington's most memorable mo- ment was finding out that she had been hired at the Academy. I had done some student teaching here but only had hoped that there would someday be an opening in the Business Dept, or that I might be hired. Much to my surprise, Mrs. Parkerton retired and I was hired as her very lucky replacement. 91 Health Mrs. Ellen Poirier One of Mrs. Poirier's high school memories is the survival of Latin IV. Her Motivation for this was being the only female in the class and having the prin- cipal for a teacher. Mrs. Barbar Rosen Dr. Elizabeth Worsham Special Education For Dr. Worsham, high school was lots of fun and filled with good times, but once was enough! She has enjoyed her experiences with the Class of 1987 over the past four years. She says, It is such a large class with diverse and unusual interests, and it has been fun to listen to their ideas. Mrs. Michelle Litke Ms. Denise Gilley During highschool there was one unforgettable exper- ience that initiated close, intense and lasting friend- ships that endure today. We spent two weeks prepar- ing to be able to understand a difficult French movie. My friends and I chattered through the film and re- ceived detention. The detention group is now known (from the name of the film) as The Red Balloon Fan Club! I have had the pleasure, headache, heartache and stress of being able to watch my students progress from immature freshmen to very mature adults. Words cannot convey the dramatic changes that take place within young people during their high school years. Actually we could describe it as The Dr. Jeckle Mr. Hyde Syndrome. 92 Miss Gisele Short Mrs. Nancy Strauss Miss Madeline Moore ORGANIZATIONS GLEE CLUB CONCERT BAND In most of the classes here at Woodstock Academy The Sound of Silence is prevalent. But in room 20, with Mr. Beckwith, our Rhythm of Life is heard, loud and clear. Several events occurred this year and school spirit was at an all time high. So much of this year will be recalled someday, most of which has been stored in our memories vividly, as moments in time. HOME 4 CARDEN SUPPLIES CHARLES FRANKLIN MARIE SHERMAN General Manager A Office Manager 135 Jkn £ OcvdLuryt Co-Editors As John Knowles said in A Separate Peace, Everyone has a moment in history which belongs particularly to him. It is the moment when his emotions achieve their most powerful sway over him, and afterward when you say to this person the world today' or 'life' or 'reality' he will assume that you mean this moment, even if it is fifty years past. The world, through his unleashed emotions, imprinted itself upon him, and he carries the stamp of that passing moment forever. Although capturing every moment is an impossibility, the 1987 Spire Yearbook Staff set out to portray several of the crucial moments in high school life. Our success can partially be attributed to the reappearance of color in the opening section, which we feel vividly expresses these moments. But it was through the time and effort of our dedicated staff that we were able to bring these moments together effectively. Best wishes and good luck in the future! Sincerely, Jonathan Braaten.
