185TH WOODSTOCK ACADEMY ANNIVERSARY AND TOWN OF WOODSTOCK TERCENTENARY EDITION WOODSTOCK, CONNECTICUT CONTENTS: THEME 2-15 SENIORS 16-43 FACULTY 44-45 SPORTS 46-55 ORGANIZATIONS 56-61 UNDERCLASSMEN 62-73 ADVERTISEMENTS 74-95 Making The Scene The world is a stage! We all play a part In our many scenes of life, and each of us plays roles as individual characters. Each part, no matter how small or large has significance and makes a difference. We all help make the scenes. Some scenes are more important for some than they are for others. There are an endless number of scenes, and we can choose which we want to be in and what roles we want to play in our scenes. There are sports scenes, drama scenes, music scenes, learning scenes, art scenes, fashion scenes, and many others. You can make the scene” by being with the group or by being an individual. You can make the scene by getting involved on a team or in a singing group, by getting there and by being the first to spread the news. You can make the scene” by earning your keep and by introducing the latest fashion by leading and following, making choices and mistakes, winning and losing. You make your scene. You make your life. 2 Some of us choose to play our scenes in life unobtrusively and try to fit in by conforming, being like everybody else, while others love the thrill of being totally different! In a teenager’s hectic world, we all need a break from the pressures of the world around us, to take some quiet time alone to ourselves to find out who we really are. Stop and think, for our actions in today’s scenes especially give more than a hint of our future parts in life. We should choose all our roles carefully because tomorrow is coming. — SB. 3 Making It Through By Making The Best Of It Only frustrations. That is all I hear. I’m supposed to be polite, yet aggressive in sports. When I get home I have to leave time for the family, chores and tons of homework. Where does that leave time for my friends? I try to fit in, but I like to be different. Sometimes its hard. I find myself excluded. I don't know who or what the real me is. What pressures! Its just so unfair, being so obsessed with becoming the perfect teenager. We are all in the transitional period. I guess its like waves at the beach. You see them racing towards you. You know know its going to crash all over you, but you dive in anyway. The real world holds still more challenges and frustrations for us. But no matter how tough our world is we can survive. We can survive by coming together to overcome our crises, helping each other through all the bad times. — K.F. A.Y. 5 Making It There A car! That’s every teenager's dream. Just last year the rage was mag wheels, chevy big blocks, and who could pull an awesome line back. Motorheads ruled and squealing tires were a daily event. This year, cars with engines powerfull enough for two cars are quite the rarity. The trend in eighty-six lies in normal cars with nothin more than standard equipment and a lack of rubber-burning ability. Still, even more popular is the revival of the motorcycle. Popularity has skyrocketed with the incorporation of turbos. Motorcycles are also sporting blowers, mag wheels, and overall high performance machines. For a lot of students who don't own their own vehical, bumming a ride” is the only way — the cheapest way — and the most fun. Some students from Pomfret and Brooklyn have been known to pile in or stuff seven people in a car built for four. But the most important aspect of making it there is that — M.A. MAKING THE PLAY We win! The last basket, the winning goal, a sprint to the finish. It comes down to a one on one. Who's the fastest? Who has the moves? Who’s the strongest? High school sports are intended to teach. Comradery, respect for rules, officials, and teammates, how to perform under pressure, and most of all, teamwork. How to work with peers to achieve a common goal is the most important thing sports can teach us. How to work with other people. We are faced with this for the rest of our lives. Too much emphasis these days is placed on winning. Winning is nice, everyone loves a winner. But what about the losers? There will always be losers. Who cares about the losers? Giving ones all for the good of the team is the most that can be asked of anyone. Woodstock has always stressed this and it's a tradition that must be kept alive. The player that, in the face of impending defeat, doesn't quit, and still gives everything he has, is the real winner. In these times of pressure to win at all costs, we must keep our grip on reality. The philosophy of teamwork must override any other. This is the only way that we can truly say, I win. You win. We win. -J.M. MAKING THE BREAD Our parents want us to make our own money, ’stand on our own two feet, and become adults before we are ready to. We want to have fun, to put our own money into saving accounts, pick up the dinner tab, and buy what- ever we want without always having to use those familar words, Mom, can I have some money?” That’s nearly freedom at sixteen! But wait! What happens when you get home at 10:00 P.M., tired after a five hour shift, you drag yourself into your room, as you collapse, you see the pile of pencils and notebooks staring at you expec- tantly. They are not even touched. Ig- nored again and again. But what would I ever do without the ’’great American dollar? But now it’s too late. Guidence counselors, teachers, parents, schoolwork, piling up. Summer school? No way! Questions and more Questions. Help! An F?!! What did I do to deserve this? Was it worth it? Making the bread, being an adult at sixteen? Hmm We’ll all be in the working world sooner than we think. Then we can concentrate. Right now though, at least for a little while longer lets just be kids. T.C. 8 Making It Known She tells him He tells her She tells somebody else There’s just no cure. The words, they fly From lip to lip. The stories, they grow As the tongue does slip. How can we stop All this air polution? I believe silence Is the only solution! 9 •H.G. Making The Fun All work and no play? No way! Sometimes you’ve got to have some fun. You know how it is, you’ve studied for days, you’ve made it through mid-terms, and the weekend is finally here! Once in a while, well maybe more than just once in a while, Academy students find it necessary to let go, get rid of tension and stress that comes from term papers, algebra, and basketball practice. Get the picture? They say that your high school years are The Best of Times”. This may or may not always be true, but you must admit weren’t the dances fun? Class trips? And do you remember spirit week and homecoming? How about the time when you tried out for the play, or when you socred the winning point? Remember the slave auction and working at the haunted barn? Remember laughing with your friends at the lunch table, and lying in the sun on the lawn? Many of the things we'll remember about high school are all the fun things we did, and the good times we shared with our teachers and friends. So take a few minutes to relax, and remember the best of times. 10 C.C. Floods of fads. They come roll- ing in with the tide. At 7:45 am the tide brings in a new, exciting fad and swoosh! By 2:40 pm it is swept away into the ocean of old, abandoned fads. We, the seagulls, flutter around the beach waiting to see what the tide brings in. Swooping down, we pick them up eagerly and fly off showing our new found discovery. Soon there are hundreds of seagulls dotting the sky, holding in their beaks the new found fad. Down below a lone, brown-speck- led gull looks up towards his peers. To him they are the same, he is an indi- vidual, but he is missing out because he will not go with the flock. He does not find this fad fascinating. Does anybody remember alligator shirts and preppy names? They’ve sunk down to the bottom of the ocean where they are slowly being eaten by the fish. Words are drowned too. To- tally Awesome. A fast fading fad ea- ten up by the sharks is the image of a Valley girl reflecting in the blue ocean water. Oh yes, we seagulls had to get the punk sunglasses and the ankle- boots. And what about the Michael Jackson album cover now saturated with salt water? The seagulls flew so far to find an OP shirt: now it is drift- wood. The translucent blue jelly san- dals are entagled in the seaweed. The flavor of jelly bracelets, millions of them, will not taste good to the fish. Ear clips also dot the ocean's floor. Swatches, which hit the seagulls like a tidal wave, will form a coral reef of time. All of these fads flood the ocean: a characteristic of the past. The brown-speckled gull stares up again at his peers. He wonders what the new, full moon will bring In future days. He sighs Floods of fads. -P.W. Making Decisions .. In high school we are called upon to make decisions. Decisions that will effect us the rest of our lives. At times the pressure is high, sometimes you just have to relax and have fun to survive. That is what growing up is; making unreasonable decisions. Should I go to school today? Should I take a shower? Should I part my hair down the middle or on the side? Should I kiss on the first date? It all starts when you are very young. Grown-ups are always asking, What do you want to be when you grow up? And you usually answered, A cowboy! or A ballerina , and your parents smile. As you get older, they’ll try what I call the sneak approach, and say something like, Twenty years from now, what do you think you’ll be doing? What really gets me is when you answer their silly questions; Mom, Dad, I want to be rich, famous, and single. I want to be older. Boy do they flip out. I don’t understand why, after all, you've made some kind of decision. A lot of unreasonable decisions are made in high school. Classes, friends, parties, colleges and careers. I really do find it hard to believe these are the best years of my life. Last year. I spent a whole morning in a musty room, filled with women, and jocks, trying to decide which little dots to fill in. Then there was the college decision. After that I had to decide what was to be my major. I still have yet to decide if I will skip the last day of school or not. what to wear to graduation, who to invite to my party, and how to say good-bye to my friends. Uggg! What's next? •H.G. 12 When the bell rang, I stuffed my trash In my bag and grabbed my books and started to walk to Chem. lab. Hey, wait you forgot your notebook, Jason yelled. Oh, thanks, can’t lose that. Urn are you doing anything Friday? Uh, I was wondering if you wanted to go to the movies?” This was finally the moment I had imagined for a longtime. I was going to go out with him. We were going out together. Me and Jason Mathieson! 13 Making The Move Jason Mathieson. My mind was always on Jason. But right now I sat in English class waiting for the bell to ring for first lunch, with Jason. I was listening to my teacher explain the Shakespearean Theatre when suddenly, out in the hall stood Jason. I looked up and he was standing there, waiting for me to see him. He smiled, and I smiled and waved back. Vivian! Attendez! My teacher yelled at me, shutting the classroom door. In the lunchline, I made my way through trying to get to Jason. Jason, could you pass me a bagel?” I asked, giving him my sweetest smile. ”1 suppose I can manage that, flirted Jason. We walked outside together, joining our friends who were talking about the Rambo movie. -P.W. MAKING OUR HISTORY Who is that? This is a question which many students may soon be asking each other when the old portraits from the White building attic are restored and hung in the Old Academy Hall. Sitting in a classroom with as much history as room 100, the Old Academy Hall, often inspires one to think of what this same place was like almost two centuries ago. What people sat here an what was this room used for? Stories of past headmasters, of buildings that are no longer in existence, or about the dormitory room that is now the room in which you have English, makes students more aware of the vast history behind the Academy and evokes a certain pride in attending this school. The many rooms of the White building and the Hall gymnasium, as well as the common on which we have gym classes and the campus on which we eat lunch, all have been part of the Academy for a very long time and can make a student feel honored to use them. 14 15 Aside from the historic facilities here, there are also traditions still active today, which have been in existence for several generations of students. Activities such as the Senior Tea at the Pink House, Academy Sunday, and school spirit are among these. Although spirit is not an activity, It is still a tradition which livens and unites the students here. It is participation in these activities which brings us closer to our history. The Academy has a special histry that has been carried on through the years, and has gradually been changed and added to by each generation of students leaving their mark. Along with carrying on long established traditions, we also continually add to and change our traditions to make them more our own. By starting such activities as the slave auction, spirit week, senior-faculty sports events, language volleyball, and Homecoming, we are contributing something from today's world which may become part of Academy history in time; our mark in history. North, only to Marianapolis Prep, who won the Q.V.C. tournament and also advanced to the finals of the state tournament. The teams season ended on a low note, with a disappointing loss to Bolton in the opening game of the state tournament, but Coach Robert Kirk was pleased with the teams overall performance throughout the season, and was surprised at the calibar of play that the team maintained during the second half of the season. Coach Kirk thought that the highlight of the season came during a six game stretch in the second half of the schedule. It started with a close loss to Marianapolis (1-0), but from then on the ball rolled the Centaurs' way, as they won five consecutive games, including an upset of Class L Killingly, and a brilliant team performance while crushing Hale-Ray, the second place team In the Q.V.C. south, 7-2. It was a fun team to coach, commented Mr. Kirk on the overall character of the team. There were no cliques-everyone seemed to get along, he continued, and they all enjoyed playing soccer. R Tiffany. Soccer Next year looks bright, with 11 out of 16 Varsity lettermen returning, but when asked about it, Coach Kirk simply replied, I have learned not to look ahead to the next season-kids are kids. There are just too many variables, too many unknowns between the end of one season and the beginning of the next. It is better to begin that first day of Hell Week , fresh-without prejudices or preconceptions. The Boys J.V. team compiled a record of 10-1-2, under the guidance of Mr. Taylor, and the leadership of two different captains at each game, giving each team member the chance to be captain. The Freshmen Soccer Team tried hard, but came up short with a 3-7-1 record. The boys were under the leadership of Mr. Richard Russo. Boys’ J. Soccer J. Conover, J. Mullin, J. Laurens. M McCrae. P. The Lady Centaurs took the QVC crown once again, but this time with an unblemished QVC slate, which has not been accomplished for the last six years. The team also qualified for the state tournament games and were proud to make it to the quarterfinals. Hale said, ’’that both state games were evenly skilled and well played. Coach Hale feels that the seniors on the team improved the unity and the strength of the team as a whole. Hale said, the team exceeded the expectations through hard work and complete dedication. Coach Hale and the team recall the Parish Hill game as being the most memorable. The Centaurs were behind 0-1, then came back in the second half with a tie of 1-1. The girls then took the game in an intense overtime, winning 2-1. Coach Hale said, assuredly, I'm sure with the excellent players who will remain at Woodstock Academy we will continue to field extremely talented teams. E. Darigan, S. Bibek, C. Brandt, S. Coach Evans recalls, the girls never gave up, even when they were losing. In a tough game against Killingly High the Lady Centaurs scored a tying goal in the last two minutes of the game. Coach Evans reveals that the strength of the team was that ALL of the players contributed to their success. The substitutes were just as skilled as the starters. Evans said, the 1985 Girls J.V. The Woodstock Academy Yearbook Staff has attempted to grow and change along with the Town of Woodstock. The three hundredth Anniversary of the Town of Woodstock and the one hundredth and eight-fifth Anniversary of the Woodstock Academy prompted the staff to make a change. A new Tercenternary Edition size, 9” X 12”, was implemented in the hopes of increasing an awareness of community and Academy history. The larger book enabled the Yearbook Staff to develop new ideas in coverage and layout style. Making the Scene portrays the ingredients that are commonly found in high school life. The recipe may have varied since sixteen eighty-six, but it produces similar experiences. Best wishes in this Anniversary year.
