KK77 SPIRE Woodstock Academy, Woodstock CT, Vol. 18 V____________________________________________J Did you realize, after donning the first and last paper hat and beginning life as a freshman, that four years at WA would be the time of your life? Probably not. In addition to the awe-inspiring up- perclassmen ordering you to do ten pushups in a puddle, or climb the flagpole, there were many oth- er perplexing things to consider. Hours had to be spent waiting in line on steep stairs to receive a dozen homework filled books. There was an endless variety of old- er, seemingly wiser faces with which to contend. Frustrating minutes were wasted trying to determine the easiest route from the field house to the white buidling. 3 But after the adjustment, life at WA is more than searching for buildings or recalling a locker combination. Break is spent discussing the torture of biology class or laughing about the time someone bumped into a teacher. Hours are wiled away plotting with a close friend about how to get that cute junior to notice you. 5 And after lunch, it is difficult to pull away from the fiery leaves of fall . . . 6 7 The opportunity to associate so freely with peers and experience such a unique world will never again be given. Yes, there are times when it seems as if the faculty has conspired to ruin your Saturday night date, or prevent you from attending the basketball game. And often, its audience is not too receptive. Spitballs shoot across the room and the wisecracks of budding hecklers mingle with the ceaseless chatter of those more interested in the latest gossip than the formula for finding the mass of an object or the literary impact of The Wasteland. fir t row: Mr. Ripley, Mr. Greer, Mr. Tetreoult, Mr. Fiereck, Mr. Wafcer, Mr. Smith, Mr,. Smith, Mr. Izbicki, Mrs. Gentry; Second row: Mr,. Angelo, Mr. Helyer, Mr,. Sargent, Mr. Bodd, Mr. Weaver, Mr . Peck, Mr. Anderjon. An effort to capture this audience leads the teacher to invent attention getting devices. The explosion of a small bomb wakes even those determined to sleep through chemistry. A chariot race emotes Latin vocabulary. Students panting like dogs and holding their stomachs eventually breathe properly while singing. In truth, the dedication of the faculty makes the learning experience at WA unique. Their inventiveness and the fun it pro- duces helps to make high school the time of your life. 11 FACULTY DIRECTORY AGOSTINELLI, MRS. THERESA - Science, B.A. SCSC, M.S. Potters create at the wheel, actors rehearse into the night, musicians perfect solos before a con- cert, editors thrill at the sight of their paper in print. For most, the lessons, skills and art brought out by these activities cannot be mastered in a day or week. A J 19 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Left to right, B Salvas, R. Roberts, M. Gollerani, S. Walker, D. Hutchins, L. Galleroni, S. Morrison, I. Woodcock, M. Nelson; Missing from picture: B Bond, M. Stanton. At the end of last year an inexperienced but enthusiastic Staff began throwing out ideas as to what high school was. We tried to portray our feelings — that high school was exciting, that behind the classroom there was something remarkable going on — people were having fun! Instead of a theme which was inspiring or thought provoking we chose to put the total four year experience into a different perspective. Enthusiasm gave way to frustration as every member of the Staff learned of such nasty things as consistent internal margins, counting spaces to see if copy would fit, and the dreaded sin — trapped white space! But through all these horrid terrors a somewhat dwindled staff survived. We hope you'll enjoy the outcome. We the editors of the 1 977 Spire Yearbook would like to thank all the people who contributed their time in preparing this Spire: Martha Griffith for the theme; our photographers, Doug Stark, Mark Starr, and Andrew Beach; Mr. Guy Grube and Mr. Robert Bazinef of Grubes Studio for our Senior portraits, and all their patience throughout the year; Mr. Hyland who contributed the beautiful color photograph of the Academy; Mr. Findley our Yearbook Representative; and most of all Mr. Robert Smith whose constant overseeing with his knowledge and whip made the book possible.
