OUR TOWN DEDICATION SCENES HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN ACTIVITIES SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS PERSONALITIES HOMECOMING SNAPS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JUNIOR HIGH GRADES Published by the students of Woodsboro High School. m ..... . , x Volu e 6 1954 Woodsboro Te as FOREWORD Here is a pictorial view of the activities of this school year We have placed special emphasis on the town of Woodsboro May it leave pleasant memories to the students and people of this small but wonderful town The Staff DEDICATION THE EAGLE staff of l954 dedicates this annual to all the people who have founded and built Woodsboro They have built a good town, based upon the fundamentals of life religion, education social welfare work, and play The future leaders of our home town are happy to dedicate this issue to the people who are responsible the people of Woodsboro The Staff HISTORY The history of Woodsboro is Confined to five decades It all started when the St l.ouis,Brownsvzlle and Mexican railroad was built through Refugio County an l906 The cattle loading pens which served the Tobe Wood ranch five miles south of Refugio were named Church Station because of the proximity ofa struggling little rural church Ranchnng throughout the entire section was the order ofthe day and no one dreamed that the ranches would be subdivided into fertile farms ln the winter of 1907 the Bonnie View Land Company was formed A complete survey of the 37 acres was made by the company and the present townsite was laid out The company set aside free land for a town square, a school, and churches ln the spring of 1907 an active selling campaign was started throughout Texas and middle western states with the result that a flow of families moved in to settle on the land which they had bought and started at once on the lab of building homes barns and other farm buildings The first building constructed in Woodsboro was the land company's own hotel lt was a two story frame building that stood until about 'I933 when it was torn down for the construction of the pre sent modern structure occupied by the Warren Hotel Along the side ofthe hotel which faced on the railroad and could be easily seen by transients some imaginative land executive had a huge sign painted which boasted to thetravelmg worldthat This is the Real Garden ofthe Lord Since those early years when the community life of Woodsboro was comparatively primitive, one can readily see that the town s development has been steady when one realizes it is now a modern municipality in every respect with a large school adequate churches, civic clubs and a well round ed community life u I ' . - . - . . . Cope, an ex-student and the teacher of commercial subiects in Woodsboro at the present time,'was in charge of registration. Mrs. Ben Thomas, who has had children, grand- children, and great grandchildren attend Woods- boro schools, ,is registering in the first picture. The second picture shows two members of the T915 graduating class who were present at the first Homecoming, Mrs. Nellie Phillips and Mrs. Mabry Thomas. Mr. Thomas drove them on the field in a buggy. in tne third picture Bernell Borden, a nephew of both women, has just presented them with a corsage. The first Homecoming for Woodsboro High School was planned in October, l953, and became history on November l3, 1953. The following people helped make the homecoming a success: W. A. A reception in the Gymnasium was the first event. Many ex-students and ex-teachers talked over old times way back to 'l9l4. The football game was well attended. The reception at the Civic Club after the game was a huge success. The exes were organ- ized and officers were elected so plans could be made for l954.
