In order for us to reach out for anything we must have love. There are many things we love and to each his own kind. The biggest love is for each other. If we reach out for one another we will learn to help each other. When people try their best to help some- one of something they really care for it, so this is love. Sometimes you must have patience to under- stand someonc or something. Books don't seem interesting ifyou don't understand what is being said or what is going on. Take time to understand and really get to know people. A1lages,raees,and religions can really get a fullfillment in life just be seeking out different types of people and their beliefs. Understanding can actually be fun if you give it a try. ff , M--. x..v, W, ,, 4 MN , W '14 QW MQW' H? uv- RESPONSIBILITY THE ability to meet an obligation and be liable in order to fullfill that responsibility. Students are responsible for seeing that their homework is com- pleted in time. Athletes are responsible for seeing that their in top condition for sports. Mr. Wilkin- son is responsible in everything concerning Wood- ruff High. The counselors are responsible in seeing that students have their schedules and help students with any problems they may run into during their high school years. The yearbook staff is responsible for seeing that the yearbook is completed on time and to make the yearbook interesting to the student body. Everyone assumes some responsi- blity. ff r 4 ,f Students reaehottt to achieve another Karlyn Miller reaches for the hole so she can achieve her part in the game. Achievement is the main idea when you're in High School. Everything you do is to reach out to achieve your school work. Being a senior especially. If they have passed their first three years, that is an achievement. Their biggest goal right now is the last year, this will be the greatest achievement. The rest of us will keep on working and we will get there. All the activities in High School thatyou participate make you achieve. The work we put into sports and we win a game or a wrestling match, this is another achievement. Succeeding is the biggest achievement when you're a hard working student in High School David Knowles has completed his final touchdown. Recognition is the making known to others. Reaching out to be recogni- zed is not very hard when you are a student in High School. Being in- volved in different activities will make you do something outstanding so you will draw people's attention. At Woodruff High School students try to reach out so that they will be recognized for it. The best kind of recognitioni is when you do something and if you are given lots of attention you deserve recognition. It is better to let others recognize you rather than you let everybody know you are something. Susie Reynolds wants everyone to see Julie Trau's shoulders are strong. High School is made up of very important people. All these people are reaching out to each other or helping themselves. Every person is different and has his style of doing things. Students may reach out to try to get their homework done, this is helping themselves. Some people reach out with their friends by having fun and a good time. Getting together in groups to perform your talent is a way people reach out to other people. No one person is alike and this is what makes everything reach out to enjoy themselves and be happy. Maria Lea Victoria Catnna Javier was a shy, soft-spoken sixteen year old from Basilar City, a city of 64,000 people. Her father, David Javier is a business man and her mother, Adoricion Javier, is a teacher. Malie is one of four chil- dren. She enjoyed football and basketball in addition to playing the guitar. Malie found some students hard to understand and others very funny . In her first semester at Woodniff Malie participated in the musical South Pacificn in which she was a dancer. She also took part in the senior stunt show and was a non-voting member of the student council. In the Phillipines, she attended high school from 7 o'clock in the morning till 5 o'clock in the evening. Malie found the 8:30 to 3:15 schedule relieved some of the school work. Malie lived with the family of Kathy Wieland. After graduation she planned to attend college in a Pre-Med program. Malie Javier points to her home, the--Phillipines. fcwier to W HS l ia. fV,,,1,.d I Z Last summer I was fortunate enough to spend ZW months in Cartago, Costa Rica. I was a genuine part of a beautiful family-the family of Rodrigo Rojas Cor- dero. All, there was a totally new and bright way of life. After the initial breaking of ice, getting used to language, hours, new relatives, and friends, and the fantastic food, I was ready to settle myself down to do some Central American living! The daily customs I found mostly to be extremely relaxing and easy to adapt to. Iattended school from 7am-2pm with my sister, Laura. There, the differences still persisted. Because of school. l had plenty of friends for an even more enjoyable summer. Of course, the good times are onthe surface. My experience indented many life-long impressions into me. I feel I can look at the simpler, more down-to-earth things in life with a newness. It also made me awaken to my feelings for home and my people here. Thanks to A.F.S. for all of that I shall never re-live. ded W- '32 Berg Produces An Unqualified Success On the nights of April second and fourth a very successful ,play directed by Lori Berg was presented Woodruff in the auditorium. The play, presented by the Woodruff Theatre De- partment was the first play to be directed by a stu- dent. Lori handled the play very well. It came off to a great beginning and ending with Lori's directing. The play was about a group of people and their lives and past transgressions of which Laura Schle- singer played the leading role as Nora. Other fantastic performances were Pat Sweeny, who played Dr. Rank, Jill Gomes as the maid, Tom Hale as Krogsted, Debbie Goetze as Christine, and Mark Buckley as Towald. Keyettes Row 1: D. Berlett, J. Anne Fahel co-editor ,g The 19th annual Woodruff Relays held on May 21 was a wet one yet there were some very good turn- outs. Woodruff showed some re- markable talent in the Frosh-soph relay in which was run by Don Woodson, Brian Little, Andre Wil- liams, and Bill Gray. The Frosh- Soph won 3rd place in 880-yd relay. The Varsity 440 relay team, Ed Sidener, Henry Walker, Charles Warr, and Gary Brewer won 5th place. Woodruff held 2nd in the Mile Relay and 3rd in Spirit Medley. Woodruff was 7th in the meet and only 6 points from getting 3rd place, nevertheless Mr. Morgan and his team worked hard. Woodruff also was very proud to have Ivory Crockett at the relays who ran the 100-yd dash in 9.0 seconds in Nashville. He did not run due to a strained muscle. 'X fm ,L V, , 513: W ' ' . ,, , 52 On May 29, 1974, Woodruff graduated the best tackle and wrestler ofthe year, James Toona Taylor. Besides being a ver- satile and accomplished athlete, James has a cheery personality and has made many friends of students, faculty, security guards, and office workers, including Mr. Gross, for whom he paged sec- ond hour his senior year. Speaking of his versatility and accomplishments in athletics, James has quite a record. He participated in wrestling and foot- ball all four years at Woodruff and track his freshman and sopho- more years. ln wrestling he was Mid-State 9 champ four years in a row, Metamora Holiday Tournament champ for two years, was fifth in the IHSA state tournament his junior year and third in his senior year, won the Most Valuable Wrestler Award, and had a record of thirty-four wins, two losses, and two ties his junior year. His football record is equally remarkable. In his senior year, James made the All-Conference team. He was named an All State member in the Chicago Daily News and the Champaign Gazette. Among much other publicity heis received, James has been called the most sought after high school football player in Central Illinois. By the end of his senior year, Toona had gathered plenty of fame around Woodruff not only by his publicity, but also with his jovial personality. He was voted in as Homecoming Chief for the 1973-1974 homecoming' season. James was called Santa Claus Taylor for a while because he'd played the part of Santa at the Campus Life Christmas party and in the school Christmas Assembly. Along with Terry Owens, he attended Rotary Club luncheons with Mr. McDermed every Friday during the month of November. Intelligence also played a big part in Toona's popularity. Both his junior and senior years he was a member of National Honor Society and his senior year he received one of the DAR good citizens awards, Lori Berg received the other award. It has been said that he could get a scholarship on his ability, agility, and intelligence. As far as future plans go, James will attend the University of Missouri. He's not certain about his major, but he would like to go into a study that deals with people, such as psychology, or sociology. Depending on what he does in college, he may play pro football. Whatever he decides to do, the many who knew James wish him luck and remember and admire him for a long time to come. N in X4 .35 TY? On April 30, students of Woodruff High put together all their skills to give us Fine Arts Nite. The cafeteria was used as Woody High's art gallery. On dis- play were paintings, drawings, textiles, and ceramics made by students in Mrs. Taylor's and Mrs. Spalding's art classes. Teachers were in their classrooms to talk to any parents who had a question. After everyone had finished looking at the art and visiting the teachers a pro- gram was presented in the auditorium by the band, under the direction of Mr. George Brightg the orchestra under the direction of Mr. David Hawkins, and the choir conducted by Mrs. Dolores Launder- baugh. After all that, everyone was hungry and ready to go to the Ice Cream Social sponsored by AFS. Onlookers admire many ceramic pieces. 4'-7' These seniors are happy to see the year end. Many stu- dents came in carpools, bikes and other means of transportation ready to enjoy a fun-filled event with their very close friends and classmates. Food was provided of course, and then a picnic isn't a picnic without water balloons and getting sopped. We also want to thank Woodruff's own photographers who were Danny Zellars, and Danny Randolph. These are the people we would like to thank in helping us get the'yearbook intact. The most important person we would like to thank is Miss Cheris Siddall, our new advisor.
