Not everyone can be an AFS student, but thanks to your cooperation I am experiencing a wonderful opportunity this year. Your kind- ness and advice made the challenge of adapting to an entirely different way of life easierg my American family, teachers, students, and all of those whom I have met have never let me feel alone. Now that the end of my year is coming, I realize how much my time at Woodruff will influence the rest of my life. It is my hope that following the motto of the Ameri- can Field Service, Walk together, talk together. . . , we have contributed to the understanding that will bring ever- lasting peace to the nations of the world. Jose' Giralt Jose 's family includes his brothers Roger fstandingl, Franklin, his mother, Elda, his father, Jose Giralr, Sr. , and the family dog, Nicky. A volcano builds a scenic background for the Colegio de San Luis Gonzoga High School. l 26 Mlm CJQIPS iffaum ccflilmgf The AFS Program gave me an opportunity for understand- ing a people usually pictured unlike us, but actually in many ways the same. After a ten day voyage on the SS Rydam, I arrived in Rotterdam, Netherlands and boarded a train des- tined for my summer home in West Germany. Located in the Black Forest just six miles from the French border, Pirmasens became my second hometown. Although greatly destroyed in WW ll, this city of 60,000 is now pros- perous and growing, centered around the shoe industry. My German family consisted of Dr. Wegner, a dermatolo- gistg Mrs. Wegner, a housewifeg Ronny, a free-spirited twelve- year-oldg and Raimund, a nineteen-year-old sports car enthusiast. I wish more people could have this valuable experience which gives an insight into the real meaning of the AFS motto, Walk together, talk together, then and only then will there be peace. The powerful Rhine River cuts its way through a land of great beauty carrying the industry of the country on its backg no visitor can help but be impressed by it: and tlt people. who make it live. The four-year Latin curriculum, which included the study of Vergil and Cicero during alternating years, helped the foundation of English vocabulary, English grammar, and rhetoric. Latin Club has been active for thirty years and received an official charter from Student Council in 1961. A spring banquet, held at Bradley Student Center was the chief social event of the year. Its program featured an original playlet based on Roman mythology or history.
