READING CENTER PROGRAM READING CENTER For the third year, everyone in the English Department was given an opportunity to' spend about four weeks fone grading periodj in Reading Center, working on concentrat- ed direction in trying to improve reading skills. Specially trained instructors, using mechanical aids, graded texts, and charts to graph progress, help the slowest or ablest reader, giving everyone an opportunity to improve to his utmost. Sharon Hoepfner, Dennis Storey, and Joyce Bollman are showing a film in reading center. larry Zarley, Adrian Weber, Bill Shelton, Suzanne Wilcox, and Estelle Trilikis are working to improve their reading. Gratifying results were achieved when students doubled their rate, and comprehension scores went up proportion- ately. Everyone improved in something whether it was rate, comprehension, vocabulary awareness, or an improved attitude for the world of reading. The college preparatory sought a way to accelerate all the reading to be required of him. The terminal student was made aware of the most efficient approach to his future reading needs. a 1 1 it a film. A class in reading center watching 117,
