The 21st year in Woodruff High Schoo1's history started for students on Friday, Septem- ber 6th. The halls were crowded that first dayg but after a week or two, routine set in and we realized that for the first time in many years Woodruff had a student body small enough to fit the building--a total of ll92--a drop from 1670 last year due to the new Richwoods High School. rr- There was even room for everybody in the auditorium as we discovered at the first assembly of the year called to get the Activity Club off to a good start. Nine hundred ten signed up to get 831. 90 worth of school games, plays, dances, and publications for a mere 39. 80. The long talked of space travel had its beginning. SPUTNIK, Russia's epoch-making, man-made sat- ellite, started its course around the world 560 miles out in space, circling the globe every hour and a half at a speed of over 18,000 miles an hour. Woodruff students Howard Peters and Pat Gouran, strain their eyes to catch a glimpse of Sputnik as it appears in the southwest sky.
