As long as our schools uphold the rights of the individual, offering to all the opportunity to seek knowledge and truth-then we can believe that the World of tomorrow will be a better and a finer one. We present Woodruff High School-typical of America's effort to keep alive in the hearts of her youth those principles which their fore- fathers held dear. 4, ,Z f -f ' -.,,. ' 1 ' ---M. . Another successful year was experienced by the Woodruff High School Student Council under the capable leadership of Roland Watzl, pciiesidentg Philip Wherley, vice presidentg and Mr. W. G. Carlin, faculty a viser. One of the first projects sponsored by the student council this year was the third annual Homecoming held on October 29 and 30, 1941. This consisted of a big stunt assembly on October 29, followed by a dance at the Inglaterra Ballroom with Freddie Steven's orchestra. Another annual undertaking of the council was the publishing of the student directory which was distributed to the student body. This con- tained the names, addresses, and phone numbers of every student enrolled in Woodruff High School. During the year the student council promoted eight orchestra social hours after school in the gymnasium. For one of the first social hours, the popular recording artists The Four Cleffs were obtained and a novel and patriotic idea was used for gaining admission to the dance and an assembly which preceeded it. Admission to the assembly and social hour was by activity pin and the purchase of a ten-cent defense stamp, or to those students not be- longing to the activity club, a twenty-five cent defense stamp. Other well-known orchestras obtained for social hours, included Johnny Dyar, Scanlon-Paulson, and Clyde Lamborne. At the beginning of each semester the council operates a book ex- change which has proved beneficial to the students in two waysg they are able to sell the books with which they are finished, and obtain used books for their own use. At the beginning of the second semester, the student council installed a new Lost and Found system, which proved very efficient. The fifth year of the Woodruff High School Student Council was officially closed with the annual banquet, and its members are looking forward to another successful year. ty- seven MARIAN KNEER Editor wpmvls W . ,M D ETT QPA' gEff IE 33956525 Mana Alive I-5252011138 anage r TI I E Row 1-M. A combined business and social meeting is held in a member's home on the last Monday of each month. One-act plays, songs, games, and con- versation in French give all members an opportunity to take part in the club activities. In May the combined French clubs of the city attend a banquet at the University Club, where each school presents a part of the program. OC IN r-1 lr mv 5 332 'Zu :,., mm , iw! DeLong, Attendant. THE MARDI GRAS OF WOODRUFF Homecoming got off to a flying start on October 29. A pep assembly coached by Mr. Livingston had just enough sparkle in it to start this festive day off with a swishl Gayly decorated floats, gleeful voices, and a long procession of cars paraded through town advertising our third annual Homecoming. Mr. Dunlop can Well be proud of his efforts on the parade committee. Proving a success was the Stunt Show, in which all the classes took part and gave four-bell performances. Our hats are off to Miss Sperling. Reigning throughout the Homecoming was Mari- lyn Bauwens-Honored Queen. Her charming attendants were Bettie De Long and Violet Engstrom. Congratulations are due to Miss Luke, who labored on the Queen committee. Everyone was sorry to leave the dance which followed the Stunt Show and appreciated Miss Cody's Well-planned dance program. Since all events taking place before the game were victorious, the game naturally had to follow through With this idea with a score of 7-O. Manual was the good loser. Donna Schuettler, chairman of the Homecoming, and all other Council members deserve a lot of credit for their untiring efforts to make the Homecoming a success. Row 1+D. Schuettler, B. Cooley, V. Audiences were captivated by the displayal of Southland charm and promptly stamped the show a success. But what else could it be when under the direction of Mr. Woodman and Mr. Livingston? Deserving a sentence by himself is Don Winslow, who designed the original scenery for this gala event. Credit is also due to Miss Westermann, Miss Hedstrom, and Mr. Durham, who so willingly gave up their time to guarantee the success of this show. Page after page of thanks Wou1dn't be enough to express our gratitude to the mothers Who made the costumes and helped in a thousand other ways. rx. 8? 5 5? g k i W, - W3 AX, K -k-ff '. gf ig E- Yi, . 5, -'E-if my m!a 1 wRXE -W E - L51 i . 3 S 1 I 1 21 Ai 5 Row 1-M. THE LUTCHINC5 CLA As you can readily guess from the title of 1942's All-School play, it was a thriller! This wasn't just an ordinary play with a cast and a direc- tor, because Mr. Livingston chose the cast, Mrs. Arnholt directed it for two weeks, and Mrs. Plummer finished the job-three reasons for the play being a triple success. In the spring, a young mans's fancy turns to PROM NIGHT, especially if that man is a junior, for that is the night of his heart. Tommy Hybiske, president of the junior class and King of the Prom, led the grand march with his radiant Queen, June Bramlet. To further our Good Neighbor program with Latin-America-a Conga line highlighted the evening. Gaily colored formals and flowers made the prom a colorful picture. All committees deserve a lot of handshakes for the excellent entertainment provided. Orchids to Miss Hession and Mr. Ririe for all their labors in behalf of the juniors who staged a prom that was the best yet. ff? It can be in a handshake . . . a cordial in- vitation . . . the warmth of a store's rela- tionship to its customers. And there's a fifth dimension in the spirited cooperation of a store to serve a community, people in all walks of life. For 62 years Block 81 Kuh1's has stood near-kin in the affection of Central Illinois. That's Why we've counted this fifth di- mension along with the brick, and mortar and steel of Block 61 Kuhl Co. And we shall continue to be measured, not by square feet, or number of floors, but by the warmth of our hospitality, the depth of our courtesy, and the scope of our service! BLUCK A D K HL C0.
