The Zephyrs -- Ninth Grade Hi-Y The ninth grade Junior Hi-Y came into being at a formal induction on March 16, 1949, as the Zephyrs This name was chosen because Zephyrs means west wind , which is a prevailing wind and a constant one. The Zephyrs try to be constant in the ideals and purposes of their minds, strengthen their bodies, worship God, and work together for a finer community and better world. Social programs, sports events, and services to the school and community fill their calendar. A trip to Hollywood on Y Day in October, 1950, started their activities of the school year. There they watched U.C.L.A. defeat Stanford in a football tilt. Since then, the Zephyrs have held several successful dances and stag parties with the Monday Y-Teen group and Tiger Optimists. This spring semester, their highlight activity, and climax of the basketball season, was a barnstorming tour of Glendale and Whittier with a game at each spot for the B and C quintets. On this trip, they visited Forest Lawn to see the famous Last Supper window, and then went to Knott's Berry Farm where they saw its realistic ghost town. In sports they go swimming at downtown Y, play foot- ball, basketball, track, and softball. The Zephyrs took second place in the City Recreation Department basketball league. They always have a fun- filled beach party in June to wind up each school year. During the three years here at Wilson the Zephyrs have laid bricks to help build the teachers' patio, worked in the lunch arbor, built a storage and carrying case for girls' league vases, and have done other minor items. . They held regular weekly meetings on Thursday, usually at school and sometimes at the Northeast Y. By having weekly dues and swats, they keep their financial status up. The Zephyrs plan to keep their Club going at Hoover. FALL SEMESTER SPRlNG SEMESTER President .... Robert Presher President. , . . . Gayle Paden Vice president . . Gayle Paden Vice-president . . .
