Faculty ................4 Sports .................16 Activities .............42 Underclassmen .........64 Seniors ................90 Ads ...................136 '-------“---- 1977 Dedication We the class of nineteen-hundred and seventy seven hereby dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Helen Carpini. Over the past four years she has proven to be more than just an advisor and teacher; she has been a true friend. This senior class wishes to extend a special thanks to her for the time, cooperation, understanding, and enthu- siasm she has given to us over these years. The announcement of Mr. Saunders' retirement last January was deeply regretted by all. Mr. Saunders is a graduate of the class of 1931. He was one of the top students in the first class of Woodrow Wilson High School. After serving in the army for many years, he attended the University of Maryland where he received his teach- ing degree. Mr. Saunders came to Woodrow Wilson in September of 1962. He was a teacher of United State History, Effective Citizenship, and You and Your World until his retirement in January of 1976. Mr. Saunders has many outside interests including hunting and fishing. He is a member of the Governor's foot guard, who represent the Governor of Connecticut in many parades and special events. Mr. Saunders resides with his wife, and has two mar- ried sons. We wish Mr. Saunders the best of luck in the future. § . Highlights of the season included a spectacular 22-9 comeback win over Stonington and a thrilling 6-0 win over Morgan, accomplished by a 1st second interception return by Dave Russo. The squad was headed by Captains Rick Gallitto, John Roberts, Scott Ro- senthal and Dave Russo. Also playing their last season were seniors Justice Mullins, Tom Spada, Perry Cubeta, Danny Thomas and Kenny Robinson. Against an undefeated Middletown team, the Wildcats stayed within six points for most of the game, with the Tigers exploding for two more touch- downs in the late minutes. Co-Cap tains Marty Dreaher and Jeff Priest helped the squad to post an 8-6 mark, along with the steady running of Tony Sledzik, Mike McCormack, and Steve Robles. The biggest disappointment of the year was a heart-breaking 2 point loss to a strong Middletown team. The fu ture of Wilson Cross-Country was made even brighter by the addition of four new freshmen. The loss of only four seniors should enable the 'Cats tc bounce back stronger than ever next season. Row 1: Captain Holly Peterson. Row 2: Marion Jepson, Sue Tirone. This was the first season that the new pool was in use. The girls' swim team enjoyed excel- lent support from the faculty as well as the students. The team was led by Captains Carol Miller, swimming the 200 and 500 yard freestyles, and Denise O'Meara, swimming the 200 yard individual medly and the 100 yard backstroke. Lisa Helfant, Paula Belury, Diane Bur- ry, Michelle Rioux, Alane Lineberry, along with Denise and Carol, went to the State meet. This young team is hoping for an even better season next year. 28 Woodrow Wilson 5 Vinal Tech 1 Woodrow Wilson 4 Rocky Hill 2 Woodrow Wilson 0 Coginchaug 3 Woodrow Wilson 0 Middletown 2 Woodrow Wilson 1 Vinal Tech 1 Woodrow Wilson 0 Cromwell 2 Woodrow Wilson 2 Rocky Hill 2 Woodrow Wilson 2 Portland 3 Woodrow Wilson 2 Middletown 5 r Soccer The soccer team, also in its first year, managed to compile a 4-3-5 re- cord. The enthusiasm shown by the team should guarantee many more successful seasons in the future. The team was helped greatly by ex- cellent performances from Co-Cap- tains Tom Pellerin and Sal Imme. Pel- lerin and Imme were also the leading goal scorers, with 14 and 6, respective- ly. Ken Roulx also contributed 3 goals. Pete Tomczak had an excellent season in goals, as well. The Varsi- ty was led by co-captains Diane Rasch and Judy Gould. Their record was 9-7. They beat Middletown twice this year, making them city champs. They were also the first volleyball team to go to the State Tournament. The J.V. team compiled a 10-6 re- cord led by captains Donna Rasch and Andrea Shackett. They, too, beat MHS in one match, but narrowly lost the other. Overall, both teams had an ex- cellent season. They finished their season with a 12-2 mark, which is the best record that Wilson has ever had. They also beat MHS for the first time in thirteen years to win the city and conference championships, and they placed second overall in the State Finals. This year the swim team was under the lead- ership of Captain Dave Kania, who swam the 50 and 100 yard free. Scott Peters, another captain, swam the 200 and 500 yard free. This year every record was broken. Tom Kania broke school records in the 200 free, 200 Im, 500 free, and 100 back, while Dave Kania helped clean up most of the other records by breaking the 50 and 100 free. Jeff Peters broke the 100 fly record and Bob Kirkpatrick the 100 breast. The 400 free relay team of Glenn Mar- ten, Tom Kania, Jeff Peters, Dave Kania and the Medley relay team of Chris Rodenhizer, Bob Kirkpatrick, Scott Peters, and Jeff Peters also broke records. Coach Baldwin attributes the improvement of the team to the new pool and the team's desire to win. Their regular season success en- abled the 'Cats to enter the state tournament, where they recorded impressive victories over Farmington and Suffield before losing to the second-ranked Ansonia club. Throughout the season, Wilson was sparked by the outstanding offensive and defensive play of Captain James Holley. Among his accom- plishments were a one game total of 38 points, and a season total of 510. Another pleasant sur- prise for the team was Junior forward Tim Fikes who averaged 15 points per game. Against Goodwin Tech, the Wildcats posted a school record of 116 points. Although the squad will be losing the ser- vices of seniors Dave Lougee and Ned Shackett, a solid nucleus of returning players should give Wilson an even stronger team in '78.
