Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1976 volume:

Dedication We the senior class of nineteen-hundred and seventy-six, hereby dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Raymond Marchese. We entered our Freshman year together and from that moment on, he unselfishly gave of himself to the student body. As yearbook advisor he has worked extensivly with us to improve and expand our book trememdously. We’d like to thank him for his understanding, time, and knowledge. Wc greatly regret Mr. Akerly’s announcement of his retirement from teaching. Mr. Akerly attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, Gorum State Teaching College, where he recieved his Bach- elors Degree, and the University of Hartford, where he received his Masters and sixth year degrees. In 1937, Mr. Akerly began teaching in Maine, he came to Woodrow Wilson 7 years later, where he has been head baseball and assistant football coach. Mr. Akerly’s other achievements in the field of sports include being a basketball official for twenty-two years, a college football official for thirty-two years, a past president of the Basketball and Football Officials Associations, and a member of the Connecticut State Board of Football Offi- cials. He is presently Commisioner of Basketball and Foot- ball officials, an honorary life member of the International Basketball Officials Association, and the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Mass. Mr. Akerly was president of the Middletown Teachers Association, and for twenty-five years was a city playground director. Mr. Akerly’s kindness, understanding, and knowledge, as a teacher and a senior class advisor, will be missed by both the students and faculty. 3 In Memory Our fondest memories go to this man, Mr. Eugene McCarthy, who was a brilliant science teacher, and a dedicated class advisor. He recieved his Bachelor of Science, Masters of Arts, and C.A.S. degrees at the University of Conn. He came to Wilson in Dec. 1951, and was appointed head of the science department on Sept. 22, 1972. He was also photography club advisor. His effort as a teacher, advisor, and friend is missed by all. 4 Mr. Root — Assistant Superintendent Mr. Schimetschck — Principal Mr. Green — Superintendent Mr. Holley — Assistant Principal Mr. Shaw — Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Carlson Mrs. Fraulino Miss Harrington Office And Guidance Mrs. Ruimcrman Mrs. Gibson Mrs. DiStcfano Mr. Gallitto Mrs. Patricia Bryant Home Economics Mrs. Helen Carpini Math Mr. Walter D. People were asking how the Cat’s could ever find someone to fill the shoes of Darrell Hill, who broke the school rushing records for both a single season and for one game. Little did anyone know at that time what kind of season Tony Bostick was about to have; not only did he fill Darrell’s shoes, he broke Hill’s rushing record for a single season by rushing 1,324 yards as compared to Darrell’s 1,178. We had a very young club this year and the future appears to be bright for Woodrow Wilson football. As usual, much of the credit for this success goes to the coaching staff. Coach Rosano did a fine job working with the backfield units until they could run their plays flawlessly in their sleep. Coach Skubel did a great job with the line which improved each week. The play of the line was the key which turned an apparently average team into a great team. Coach Norton worked with the J.V.’s, teach- ing them the basics of football and giving them a strong base to build on next year. And, of course. Coach “Uncle Monty” Montanile did a fantastic job preparing the entire team men- tally and pulling everything together each week. Captains Jeff Gould, Todd Peterson, Randy Hilgert and Tony Bostick displayed great leadership, helped out by the other seniors Dave Gallitto, Roger Pearl, John Gunther, Chris Miller and Richard Spitzmacher. _ ■■■in..... — 2 rrrsi Football {] ) ROW I: Ken Robinson, Jamie Cox, Brian Jones, Jim Champagne, Craig Haynes, Greg White, Jim Magruder, Perry Marshal, Tom Hirsch, Sergio Mabres. From the start of the season to the end it seemed like the Cat’s would never be at full strength. This years team was paced by sophmore Tony Sledzik, who later went to the state meet. The seniors on the team were, Matt Henja, Geoff Green, Paul Goodale, Rich Wagner, Dave Ther- rien, and Carl Calhoun. All will be missed. Next years captains will be Jeff Priest and Marty Dreahcr. They will be faced with the difficult task of finding replacements for these great seniors. 25 26 ROW I: Chris Burry. Beth Milardo. For the first time in the team’s history they had a winning record. This record can be attributed to the new prac- tice times and a large turn out from the stu- dent body. The seniors on the team this year were Bob Belury, Matt Hejna, Steffan Hes- selburg, Dennis Shackett, Bill Milardo and Jay Leal. School records that were broken this year were in the 50 yd. freestyle by Dave Kania, the 100 yd. freestyle by Dave Kania, the 500 yd. freestyle by Glen Martin, the 100 yd breaststroke by Bob Belury and the 400 yd. freestyle rely by Matt Hejna, Glen Mar- tin, Steffan Hesselburg, and Dave Kania. The team came in fourteenth in the state for class M schools. The Cat’s are looking forward to next year as their team is composed largely of underclassmen who will be led by Co-Capts. There were only two seniors on the squad, Liz Atkinson and Julie Johnson. The captains were Judy Gould and Diane Rasch. Coach Spooner is sure to have a great team returning next year. The girl’s Volleyball team had a fine season consisting of 4 wins and 1 loss. The team defeated Bethel (15-13,7- 15, 16-14) Haddam (15-9, 15-12) Guilford (15-4, 13-15, 15-4) and also beat Middletown High (15-5, 15-13 but lost to Farmington (7-15, 15-13, 3-9). 34 mam mma Z'l mm f.t. Although it was a dis- heartening year for the Seniors, Capt. Phil Grant, Wayne Burgess, and Tony Bostick, the Cats soon will be reaping the benifits of their experiences and aveng- ing their losses. We have a very young basketball team here at Woodrow Wilson, a team for the future. It looks as if, next year, we should have a very compete- tive team with an excellent shot at making that elusive tournament. Looking back upon this year we may see that it closely parallels that of four years ago, and as that did, pay us back for all the heartache felt this year. On the lighter side, this season gave Wilson a chance to show what we’re made of. Despite our many losses, we kept up the same spirit and enthusiasm felt last year when we went 18 and 5. We refused to let our self-discipline break down and to boo our opponants even though the opposition did not always show us the same consideration. As usual our majorettes, “Lom- bardo’s Lovelies”, won the halftime competition for both City Championship games, hands-down. ROM Diane Rasch. Mary Lou Grisel ROM 2: Ellen Haylcs.
