In Memory Of Miss Virginia Gilbert, who was the Woodrow Wilson High School librarian from 1939 until her death on March 27, 1972. An expert li- brarian, she was a graduate of Wil- liam and Mary College and S.C.S.C. and had a B.A. and a B.S. in Library Science. She came to work at Wil- son as her first job after her gradu- ation. Miss Gilbert was the advisor for the Library Club and helped Mr. McCarthy with the former Orni- thology Club. She was also very active behind the scenes in Middle- town politics. Her sense of humor and her great service to all will cause her to be missed by teachers and students alike. We, the Class of 1975, wish to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John Snow and Mr. Sebastian Lombardo for the guidance and understanding they have shown to all. They have expressed more genuine concern and willingness to help than can be represented by this dedication. 3 Appreciation To our friend and recently retired teach- er, Louise Facius, we wish to express our appreciation of her knowledge, compas- sion, and understanding. Miss Facius began teaching in Septem- ber, 1939, and retired in June, 1974. Dur- ing her 35 years of teaching Miss Facius never lost nor will she ever lose, her talent for teaching or her interest in Woodrow Wilson High School students. 4 Administration Mr. Root Assistant Superintendent Mr. Holley Assistant Principal Mr. Shaw — Assistant Superintendent Mr. Schimetschek — Principal Mr. Green — Superintendent Mrs. Gibson Miss Harrington Mr. Gallilto Guidance Mr. Skubel Miss Milardo Office Mrs. Destepheno Mrs. Ruimerman Mrs. Carlson Mr. Kania I.A. Wilson 32 Valley Regional 12 Wilson 36 Farmington 8 Wilson 6 North Branford 31 Wilson 0 Gilbert 22 Wilson 28 Avon 36 Wilson 32 Berlin 26 Wilson 6 Morgan 32 Wilson 20 Middletown 0 This year's Wildcat football team was captained by three young men that were outstanding leaders. Captains Burt Anthony. Darrell Hill, and Richard Lombardo instilled the desire, pride, and senior leadership we try to teach. The Wildcats ended their season with six seniors and thirty-two un- derclassmen that were dedicated to each other and to their school. Our record this year was 4 wins and 4 losses. The 20-0 win in the city’s public school championship gave us our 7th championship in the past 8 years. Darrell Hill scored 13 touchdowns and gained 1.051 yards, carrying the ball 124 times in 8 football games. He also set a school record for yards gained in one game (411 yards in 13 carries against Valley Re- gional H. S. on September 21. 1974). We feel that our backficld. consisting of Darrell Hill. Richard Byrd. Tony Bostick, and Jeff Gould, was one of the best in the state. Except for senior Co-captain Burt Anthony, the line was composed of young and inexperienced players Randy Hilgcrt, Richard Bates. Jim Holley. Chris Miller. Todd Peterson, and Ricky Gallitto. They all improved 200'- and ended the season with a tremendous game against Middletown High School. Our defense (Lomby's Army), was led by Co-captain Richard Lom- bardo w ho did a fine job in calling our defenses. The defense consisted of the following: Burt Anthony, Mark Frangionc. Jim Holley, Mike Dascanio. Ron Staskclunus. John Roberts. Darrell Hill. Tony Bostick. Richard Byrd. Randy Hilgcrt. Dave Gallitto. Scott Rosenthal. Mike Santostefano, Bob Dclprado. and Roger Pearl. Many of these young men played on both offense and defense. We feel we have a great Wildcat football family our coaching staff did an outstanding job with these young men this year. Coach Rosano handled the backficld and did his usual excellent job with the many skills he had to teach the players. Coach Skubcl worked with the line and had a great challenge with the many inexperienced players he had. but he dug in” and developed a line with pride and desire. (The goal line stand against Middletown High School w as proof that he did his job). Coach Norton worked very hard with our .1. V. squad. He gave them the motivation to develop into a fine team. He also handled the scout- ing duties that helped us toward a .500 season. These loyal, hardworking, and dedicated coaches arc the backbone of the Wildcat team. I am very proud of every one of our 1974 Wildcat players, and I am very lucky to have coaches like the ones mentioned above. We would like to thank the administration, faculty, students, cheer- leaders. majorettes, band, and Pep Club members for their outstanding support and hard work. We have a great school here at Woodrow Wil- son and with student-faculty cooperation and pride we will have an even greater school in the future. Seven returning veterans and seven rookies were led by Co-captains Bill Kenney and Tom Liedke. All ran well despite the injuries of key people, giving a record of 5-10. Because of the injuries of Co-captain Tom Liedke, Mike Pellerin. Geoff Green, and Marty Dreaher, all of whom were out for part of the reason, and Larry Liedke, who was lost for the entire season, many first year runners ran against stiff compe- tition. Great promise was shown by sopho- more Jeff Priest and freshman Steve Ro- bles, who rapidly became the fourth and fifth best men on the team. Better moments in the season came when Bill Kenney and Tom Liedke were tied for first at Eli Whitney and when Bill Kenney beat Coginchaug’s best by fifteen seconds. Special thanks to the cheerleaders and majorettes for their fine enthusiasm and helpful support. The team plans to work even harder next year under the strong leadership ex- pected under Co-captains Geoffrey Green and Matthew Hejna. ROW I: Kim iVtays. Miss Phillips, Anne Smith. Co-Captain Bob Belury This year’s swim season record of 5-10 was a vast improvement over last year’s I- 11 record. According to school records, this year’s record is a school record for the number of swim meets won in a season. The ’Cats have begun to overcome many of the obstacles faced by last year’s swim team. The team now consists of 28 members, which gives the team the depth which it has always so sorely needed. Also, the promise of a swimming pool in the very near future solves the problem of in- adequate practice facilities. This year's squad was led by Captains Jeff Kania and Bob Belury. This year and in the years to come Coach Baldwin, in his second year as coach of the Wildcats, will be depending on the strength of the underclassmen. Members of this year’s swim team who established new records are Jon Rose, Ste- fan Hesselberg, Matt Hejna, and David Kania for the 400 yard free-style relay. David Kania also established new school records for the 50 and 100 yard free-style events. The regular season ended with the Cats sporting a won-lost record of 16-4. Led by senior Co-captain Rodney Privott and Rich Byrd, the 'Cats won the City Scries against Middle- town High by defeating the Tigers twice. The scores were 69-64 and 39-38. The ’Cats also captured the Mid-State Athletic Conference with a 7-1 record. The championship game against Wilcox Tech was highlighted by Philip Grant’s tap-in with one second left to provide the 'Cats with a 74-73 win. After being seeded 4th, the ’Cats took on Notre Dame of Bridgeport in the playdown round. Captain Richie Byrd paced the ’Cats to an 88-81 victory. Darryl Barnes, Rodney Pri- vott, Tom Liedke, and Phil Grant all hit for double figures. Rich Byrd led all scorers with 33 points, hit- ting 61% from the floor. The ’Cats then took on Foran High School on Mil- ford, the 5th ranked team, at Hamden High School. Again Rich Byrd led all scorers with 33 points as the ’Cats turned in a tremendous team effort to knock off Foran 82-73. Senior Darryl Barnes, playing with foul trouble for most of the game, pumped in 19 points in less than 24 minutes of playing time. He also picked up 18 rebounds and blocked 9 shots. The ’Cats advanced to the semi-finals against St. Paul’s in a game played in the New Haven Coliseum. Unfortunately, the ’Cats hit the cold night and went down to defeat 61-33 to the eventual state champions. The ’Cats ended the most successful season in 30 years with an 18-5 record. 32 Football — Cross Country Sports Banquet December 8, 1974 34 ROW I: Sue Smallshaw (Co-capt.), Debi Hayles (Co-capt.), ROW 2: Dorothy Konior, Kathy Petras ROW 3: Lori Wilcox.
