Football The 1973 edition of the Woodrow Wilson Wildeat Football Squad, led by tri-captains Bob Daniels, Dave Jarzabek, and Pete Halibozck. completed one of their best seasons since joining the Mid-State and Northwest Athletic Confer- ences, compiling a record of 6-1-1 and capturing the championships in both conferences and the City Series. The ’Cats opened the season full of the desire to win, but suffered their first and only loss of the season to Valley Regional. The game was a heart- breaker, but it did not dampen the spirits of the Wildcats who went on to defeat the Farmington Indians the following week. With this Victory the ’Cats were on their way, defeating North Bran- ford. Avon, Berlin. Morgan, and Middletown High Schools, and playing to an 8-8 deadlock with Gilbert. The ’Cats had a fine, well-balanced team this year. A strong front line consisted of Dave Jarza- bek, Bob Daniels, Rich Stanchfield, Jim Law- rence, John Wallace, Jim Dunn, and Mark Fran- gine. If the opposition got past the front line, the Wildcats were ready for them with a number of fine safety men. These ’Cats who were famous for stealing the ball from the opposition were lead by Rick Verecn who had the most interceptions, and Burt Anthony who caused and recovered many key fumbles. Other standouts in the defensive secondary were Rich Lombardo, Wayne Burgess, John Roberts, Randy Hilgert, Maurice Bonner, and Rich Byrd. The 'Cats were also fortunate in being able to establish a very effective running game behind the quickness of several fine running backs and a scrambling quarterback. Rich Lom- bardo. Rich Byrd, Wayne Burgess, John Roberts, Jeff Gould, Darnell Hill, and quarterback Pete Halibozek made up this successful backfield. Darnell Hill had a fantastic season in the county and broke the school rushing record with 1,178 yards through the 8 games. The ’Cats fine season did not go unrewarded. The coach, the team, and many individuals were singled out for their performances during the sea- son. The team was presented with trophies for the Mid-State Conference Championship, the North- west Conference Championship and the City Sc- ries trophy for their victory against cross town rival Middletown High School. Five members of the squad were selected for the Northwest Con- ference All Star Team: Bob Daniels, offense-de- fense; Dave Jarzabek, offense; Rick Vercen. de- fense; Rich Stanchfield, defense; and Darnell Hill, offense. For his fine efforts in bringing the ’Cats 1 -9 record of last year to 6-1 -1, Head Coach Montanile was awarded Coach of the Year Award for 1973 in the medium school division by the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. As their last official act as captains of the 1973 Wildcats, Pete Halibozek, Dave Jarzabek, and Bob Daniels turned the winning of next year’s squad into the capable hands of Burt Anthony, Rich Lombardo, and Darnell Hill. At the banquet at the end of the season, James Lawrence was named the Scholar Athlete, and Darnell Hill and Richard Stanchfield were named the most im- proved players. 20
