This Is the Beginning of a Brand New Dav . . . % a Better Place to Live And It’s Up to You And Me . . . 17 For the sports world at Woodrow Wilson the year ’73-’74 has been fondly termed “The Year of the ‘Cat’”, and rightly so. A wave of spirit and good vibrations swept through Wilson and this spirit brought a pride in our school and athletics. This was also the year that championships returned to Wilson. The Cat rode high in the North West and Mid-State Athletic Conferences besting all other teams, if not on the playing fields, definitely with our de- termination and spirit; but most of all, that sense of togetherness. SPORTS Football The 1973 edition of the Woodrow Wilson Wildeat Football Squad, led by tri-captains Bob Daniels, Dave Jarzabek, and Pete Halibozck. completed one of their best seasons since joining the Mid-State and Northwest Athletic Confer- ences, compiling a record of 6-1-1 and capturing the championships in both conferences and the City Series. The ’Cats opened the season full of the desire to win, but suffered their first and only loss of the season to Valley Regional. The game was a heart- breaker, but it did not dampen the spirits of the Wildcats who went on to defeat the Farmington Indians the following week. With this Victory the ’Cats were on their way, defeating North Bran- ford. Avon, Berlin. Morgan, and Middletown High Schools, and playing to an 8-8 deadlock with Gilbert. The ’Cats had a fine, well-balanced team this year. A strong front line consisted of Dave Jarza- bek, Bob Daniels, Rich Stanchfield, Jim Law- rence, John Wallace, Jim Dunn, and Mark Fran- gine. If the opposition got past the front line, the Wildcats were ready for them with a number of fine safety men. These ’Cats who were famous for stealing the ball from the opposition were lead by Rick Verecn who had the most interceptions, and Burt Anthony who caused and recovered many key fumbles. Other standouts in the defensive secondary were Rich Lombardo, Wayne Burgess, John Roberts, Randy Hilgert, Maurice Bonner, and Rich Byrd. The 'Cats were also fortunate in being able to establish a very effective running game behind the quickness of several fine running backs and a scrambling quarterback. Rich Lom- bardo. Rich Byrd, Wayne Burgess, John Roberts, Jeff Gould, Darnell Hill, and quarterback Pete Halibozek made up this successful backfield. Darnell Hill had a fantastic season in the county and broke the school rushing record with 1,178 yards through the 8 games. The ’Cats fine season did not go unrewarded. The coach, the team, and many individuals were singled out for their performances during the sea- son. The team was presented with trophies for the Mid-State Conference Championship, the North- west Conference Championship and the City Sc- ries trophy for their victory against cross town rival Middletown High School. Five members of the squad were selected for the Northwest Con- ference All Star Team: Bob Daniels, offense-de- fense; Dave Jarzabek, offense; Rick Vercen. de- fense; Rich Stanchfield, defense; and Darnell Hill, offense. For his fine efforts in bringing the ’Cats 1 -9 record of last year to 6-1 -1, Head Coach Montanile was awarded Coach of the Year Award for 1973 in the medium school division by the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. As their last official act as captains of the 1973 Wildcats, Pete Halibozek, Dave Jarzabek, and Bob Daniels turned the winning of next year’s squad into the capable hands of Burt Anthony, Rich Lombardo, and Darnell Hill. At the banquet at the end of the season, James Lawrence was named the Scholar Athlete, and Darnell Hill and Richard Stanchfield were named the most im- proved players. 20 Row I: Jim Lawrence, Norman Emond, Jim Dunn, Dave Jarzebek, Coach Montanile. The varsity gained victories against Platt, Wilbur Cross, and Valley Regional, and suf- fered losses to Maloney (twice) and North Haven. In post-season tournament action the varsity placed 2nd in the tournament behind Farmington High School, losing only to 26 Farmington. The 1-11 record of this season's swim team wasn't very impres- sive but the squad was made up of eleven dedicated athletes who exemplified all the determination and spirit of the 'Cats. It was a disappointing season for the Wildcats who won only 1 meet to Weaver; and lost a heartbreaker to Wilcox Tech. The 'Cats were faced with many obstacles this season; lack of adequate prac- tice facilities and lack of personnel with experience in competition but the fact that it is still a young squad composed of underclassmen sparks a bright note for the future. This years squad led by captain Jeff Shaw received it’s first two feminine members since girls have been eligible to compete in Varsity sports, in Marge Nelson, a se- nior; and Ellen Arabas, a sophomore. The remainder of the squad consists of senior. Bob Congdon; junior, Jeff Kania; sophomores. Bob Bclury, Matt Hejma, and Steve Hesselbcrg and freshmen, Glenn Martin, Jim Gunther and Dave Kania. Next Year and in the years to come coach Baldwin, in his first year as coach of the Wild- cats will be depending on the services of the underclassmen. Two members of the squad, Jeff Shaw and Dave Kania swam in the state trials held at Hartford Public High in which they turned in their best times of the season. Kneeling Co-captains: Bernie Lougcc. Branford 58 a For the first time in 10 years the Wilson Wild- cat basketball team with a record of 16-4 quali- fied for the State Tournament, reaching the quarter finals before dropping a 58-42 decision to Hand High School. Excitement and spirit came naturally w ith Wil- son basketball. This year's squad, led by senior co-captain Bernic Lougcc and junior co-captain Rod Privott, brought two Championships to Wil- son High: the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship and the City Championship. The season started with victories over North Branford and Eli Whitney with a loss to Portland. During the winter vacation the Cats participated in the East Lyme Holiday Tournament placing 3rd with a victory over Prince Tech and losing to East Lyme. Resuming regular season play, the Cats suffered a loss to Sheehan and then won 12 of their next 13 games. The loss to Eli Whitney was a heartbreaker. The game, which wasn't de- cided until the final buzzer, was exemplary of many of the Cats games. Defeating cross-town rivals Middletown High twice gave the Wildcats the city series trophy for another year. The members of the basketball team were feted at the Winter Sports banquet with members of the varsity basketball team receiving letters and or folders and the junior varsity and fresh- man team members receiving certificates. Rod Privott was the recipient of the Jacques Grenier scholar athlete award and James Bryant received the Stan Kosloski “Most Improved Player” award. Four Wildcats were named to several post season teams. Rod Privott and Rich Byrd were named to the 1st team of Mid-State All League Team with Bernic Lougce named to the 2nd team. For the first time in quite some time 2 Wildcats were named to the Middlesex County All Star Team: Bernie Lougee and Rod Privott, who also received honorable mention to the All-State Basketball Team. At the end of the banquet, captains Lougee and Privott turned the running of next years squad over to Rod Privott and Rich Byrd. Junior Varsity Row I: Standing. Our hyacinth was a time when our hearts beat to the same rythm A time when friends were many and tears were few Our hyacinth was a time when even hate and fear dared not stay long in our midst. For some of us this time is ending The hyacinth is withering But must the love we found there die too? Contributions “Time” By Ben Burroughs Submitted by MaryJoe DeJohn Oh time, why do you fly so fast..... where do you run and hide...... you’re like a mist that comes and goes..... a swift relentless tide... no chains can ever bind you nor can a mortal’s hands...... you are a great magician...... who fades like shifting sands.... and yet you’re slow arriving..... oh teaser of mankind...... for when we need you most of all..... you’re very hard to find..... you’re life’s most priceless treasure... sought after by us all.... you hold the key that tells us if.. we are to rise or fall... for the most part you are ruthless.... leaving waste to all you touch.... still we never tire of you... for we need you very much....... but with all your strange cavorting.... one thing bows not to your will..... for the magic known as memory........ can cause time to stand quite still. “One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters.” — Cervantes — Submitted by Russ Jacobs “The Stranger” By M.A.S. When W.P. passed out during the giving-birth film. When “Doc Holliday” “shoe-bopped through the halls; Mr. Lombardo would have been proud. Mr. Snow every day quizzies. Feeling good at B.D.’s. The pep assemblies in the cafe. When you skipped school and every car looked like Mr. Holley’s. When we had bomb scares every period. The food fights in first cafe. When the buckets were in the halls and gym everytime it rained. W'hen we used to run from one side of the school to the other side so we wouldn't get caught by Mr. Holley?? 126 Remember our great class spirit? When Mr. Saunders tried to teach History without his notebook. Cooking hotdogs at Football and Basketball games. Mrs. Baldiga and her “patriotism’'. “Alez au laboratoire, and Pour ce soir.” Margie the matron. Fred Post and his wonderful Crystall ball. When Debbie wore a dress? The shuttle bus from MHS for Westfield students. Mondays! Fighting for the bathroom at McDonald’s. The great guidance dept. When someone was coming. All the rainy “H” days. When the football team had short hair. Mount Road advertures. Mr. Lombardo’s band at the pep assemblies. When A.H. and D.P. brought an “empty” orange joice container to Millards class? When we were little freshman, and then BIG Sophomores. When “Gosh” was the word in Miss Facius’s class? When Jay Abrahamson fell asleep. When B.H. almost ripped off Nora’s shorts playing flagg football. Our 7th period girls shop class. When Phyllis got down on her knees over “By the light of the sil- very moon”. When M.R. fainted after the Biology movie. Mr. Gunther test tube quartet. The Vo-ag plant science field trip to Dairy Queen. Before chorus, outside by the parking lot. When Omaha was the Lord of opportunity. When Mr. Rosano had the work’study students playing musical rooms with him during MCC films. When Nori laughed out loud. When Mrs. Wolf joined our sisterhood. When N.C. and C.G. couldn’t find the strength to enter Mrs. Liedke’s Prc-Cal class. When we had cinerama’s 38 and 39. When Linda P. wore North Carolina shoes. Bernie and Lenora’s 7th period love affair. When we were freshmen for the first week of school the teachers had the strike. When Pat Spruill hated Mr. Holley but now she adores him. When L.W.’s stereo talked to her??? When N.S. kept her clothes on for one full day. 1974 was the year of the Cats. When being in the halls was unheard of. When Laurie, Cindy, Kathy and Joan came to Ozga’s 6th period class everyday from the parking lot. When Wayne B. wore a skirt. C.P., K.P., and J.W. almost ran over a cow. Bob D. and his scrambled eggs. When L.W., D.C. and C.K. weren’t allowed into the shop until they grew up. When Jan Whalen was a walking coat. When Heidi found a dog bone in a peculiar place. The times waiting in the cemetery for Laurie. When you jumped the fence and got caught. When Jan F., Karen K. and Darrie Y. had a phsical in the boys locker room. Remember, “You’re BEAT!” When we’d go into the girls room feeling bad and come out feeling good. C.J., S.J., T.M., F.B., P. W. and Shelia. All those nights we were supposed to be working on the float. When Mary-Joe came to the shack? And with who! Singing Kiss Me I’m Polish! Singing Kiss Me I'm Irish! When Mr. Lombardo swore revenge on me, just because I laughed when he was eating his pie. 127 Senior Personalities Most Versatile: Lenora Hyman, Dave Jarzabek Class Mouths: Nancy Smith, Paul Orlando Most Studious: Jim Lawrence, Margie Nelson Most Likely To Succeed: Nori Sayanagi, Marsha Dupnik Did Most For Wilson: Paul Vicchitto, Sue Aresco 128 Most Humorous: Chris Green, Kathie Leal Class Flirts: Tony Catanzaro, Kathy Hoover Friendliest: Ricky Vereen, Jan Fidcrio Most Changed Since Freshmen Year: Lil Elty, Peter Halibozek Class Gossips: Bob Daniels, Sue Goldberg Class Gcarhcads: Doreen Beattie, Geoff Austin.
