This years’ football team led by tri-captains John Syc, Danny Thompson, and Tim Gleeson lost their first six games, but then finished up in fine shape with three straight wins. The sweetest being, of course, against Middletown 14-8. Plagued continually by injuries, sickness, and lack of experi- ence, the Cats opened up against Simsbury and were hit hard losing 50-22. Wilsons next five opponents Glastonbury, Newing- ton, Rockville, Southington, and Plainville all easily defeated the Cats. Then with the return of Tim Gleeson, Bill Montanile, and John Syc to the line-up, the Wilson team was sparked to three straight wins. It was Milt Miller Day at the Wilson field and the Cats made it a happy occasion by knocking off league leading Windsor with a stunning upset 13-0. Next, Wilson went on the road against Bloomfield and came home with win number two and their second straight shutout. Then the City Series Game against Middletown arrived and for the third year in a row Wil- son took home the victory. The final score was 14-8. Once again Coach Montanile was awarded the City Series Trophy. John Syc was named the outstanding lineman and Timmy Gleeson was named the most valuable player. During the season Wilson’s soccer style field goal kicker, John Marchese set at least three state marks. In the Bloomfield game he kicked three field goals in one quarter. This not only set a state mark for the most in one game, but also for the most in one quarter. One of the three was a 42 yarder setting a state mark for the longest field goal in a high school game. In the Middletown game he kicked two more field goals and set a City Series record for the most field goals in a City Series game. Danny Thompson, labeled a pro prospect, and one of the most sought after football players ever at Wilson was given many honors for his talents. He was named to the ALL STATE CLASS B TEAM, THE ALL SUBURBIN TEAM, selected by the Hartford Times, and was also named to play on the East Squad in the Nutmeg Bowl Game. Tom Molski also was honored as he was named to the New Haven Chapter of the National Football Hall of Fame. At the post season banquet, Aaron Soobitsky and Bill Monta- . nile were named as co-captains for the 1970 edition of the WOODROW WILSON WILDCATS football team. The Albert E. Leary Most Improved Player Award was presented to Harold Huntley and Arthur Scoville. The William Gatlin Football Scholar Athlete Award was presented to Tom (Hands) Molski. 4 4 Cross Country This was not the year for the Wilson Cross Country team as they ended up with a 0-9 record. Like the football team, the cross country team was plagued by injuries. Be- fore the season even started, the team had lost Co-Captain Ralph Wilson because of a shoulder ailment, and Peter Bright, sophomore star of a year earlier, to a broken ankle. Led by remaining Co-Captain Sam Young, the Wilson team started its season. Glastonbury just got by the Cats 24-31. The next three meets were lopsided against the Cats as their inability to place a fifth man started to show. Simsbury then knocked off the Cats 20-40. Windsor just edged them out 24-33. Rockville and Bloomfield proved to be too much for the Cats and finally the last meet of the season against Middletown arrived. A matter of one place spelled defeat for Wilson as Mid- dletown bested the Cats 26-31. Wilson’s Paul Dooley did, however, take first place in the meet. A long hard season ended, but not before new talent had been discovered. Junior Greg Nann proved to be exception- ally good as did Rich Annino, who took two firsts during the season. Paul Dooley also gathered two firsts, one of them against Middletown. At the post season banquet, Peter Bright and Rich An- nino were named the co-captains of the 1970 editions of the Wilson Wildcats Cross Country team. The most improved runner award, presented by the captains of the Cross Country team, was awarded to Peter Aurigemma. Returning next year, besides Peter Bright and Rich An- nino, will be Paul Dooley, Allan Ciaburri, George Greer, Greg Nann, and Dennis Bishop. Next year should be a bet- ter one for Cross Country at Wilson. Team Roster ROW I: Paul Dooley, Captain Ralph Wilson, Captain Sam Young, George Greer, Craig Salonia ROW 2: Coach Akasie, Rich Annino, Greg Nann, A1 Ciaburri, Peter Bright, Peter Aurigem- ma, David Renn Basketball Our basketball team finished what has to be termed one of the worst seasons ever at Wilson. This obviously was not the year for them as their 0-20 record shows. Led by sophomore Captain Ronnie Edens, the team opened up with a home game against Glastonbury and found the visitors a little to much for them as they handed the Cats their first loss 66-32. Wilson’s next six opponents beat the Cats just as badly. Then Wilson faced Southington in a home contest and almost pulled an upset, losing by only one point 56-55. One game after another the Wilson team was defeated coming close to victory, but always ending up behind at the final buzzer. Seniors on this year’s team included Bill Vasiliou, who held the one game high of 28 points against Plainville, and Andy Chiara- vallo whose rebounding and defensive play helped the team this season. Juniors were Aaron Soobitsky, George Greer, and David Brand. The sophomores on this year’s squad were Captain Ronnie Edens, Bobby James, Mike Bonner, Richard Annino, and Harry Liedke. At the winter sports banquet, all were sur- prised by the announcement by basketball coach Dennis Guimares that due to the close- ness of the voting between no less than five people, he had decided not to name a captain until the end of next season. He stated he would make his selection on the basis of the performances of the various individuals in- volved during next seasons games. Named as the recipient of the Jacques Grenier Scholar Athlete Award was Bill Vasi- liou. The Stanley Kosloski Most Improved Player Award was presented to Mike Bonner. May the basketball team have good luck in the future. swish! Junior Varsity ROW 1: T. Mullens, R. Annino, R. Tanasi, P. Martin, R. Vereen, H. Leidke, T. Lewis ROW 2: Coach T. Alsup, L. McArthur, A. Behm Led by Captain Ron Therrien the swim- ming team posted a 3-12 record. This may sound bad, but it actually is not when you take into account that they were able to get only an hour and a half of practice a weekk and were facing the likes of swim power- , houses Hall, Bristol-Eastern, and Bristol Cen-’ tral, Lyman Hall, and Buckley. The season started off pretty badly for thcr Wilson swimmen as they ran into Lymart Hall and were just about drowned, losinjj 76-19. The next eight swim meets were re( peats of the first as the Wilson swimmen wei doing their best but were being outclassed b the much larger schools. Then the Cats pulled off one of the biggest upsets of their season by defeating East Haven 48-47. Hartford High School just got by the Cats and then the Wilson team tool two straight, defeating Weaver 70-24 ai Derby 69-26. Amity High School ane Middl town High School then easily defeated tl Wilson team. During the year the Wilson team had twc men who set new records in their particular events. The first was sophomore David Renn who set a new mark in the 100 yard butterfly. The other record was set by sophomore Bruce Parmenter in the 60 yard freestyle. Renn’s new time was 1:14.3, Parmenter’s was 32.9. At the winter sports, banquet, Mar' Aresco and Jon Daniels were named the 19. co-captains of the swim team. The Stanley Kosloski Most Improved Swimmer Awar and scholastic athlete award was presented t Mike Gionfriddo. It should also be noted that the swim tea) had only three seniors on it. These includ Captain Ron Therrien, Dave Albanese, an Mike Gionfriddo. Besides their main race; these three also swam in the relays whei. needed. v v nn t 0 CONN J 31 ’ 1)0 NOT SWIM AI.0M£ - s'.'- -' v V’.-W'-'A- -O afttSTv . . ■ -- .-- V • ' • •- V • ■'• •!• A; r ?• ..- • • Isfe? ■ Physical Fitness Row 1: Coach Alsup, G.
