THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, 1957-1961 In the fall of 1957, we realized that we had been awakened from a long nap, eight years in length. We sat up fresh and eager, and enthusiastically began a four year chase after knowledge. We were still in a world we knew and had no trouble becoming accustomed to being freshman under the leadership of our class officers; Maria Annino, president; Ann Milardo, vice-president; Marcia Duval, secretary; Donna Haight, treasurer. Russ Crescimanno served as president of Student Government, assisted by Pat Langley as vice-president. Our first effort at a literary publication, the Ram's Horn, was edited by Terry Adler. Many of our classmates excelled in various fields that year, and at the scholastic awards assembly held in June, they received recognition. To David Schilke went the award for excellence in Algebra, Joan Kowal, English; Terry Adler, Latin and Ancient History; Margo Street, General Mathematics; Ursula Arndt, Civics; Patricia Reed, Pro- ficiency in Sewing; Jeannette Bacon, Proficiency in Foods; and Deborah Hershman, Best Book Report. We achieved not only scholastic, but social success under the capable guidance of our faculty advisors Mr. Delegan, Mrs. Speershneider, Mrs. Levansalar, Miss Benson, Mr. Randall, Mr. Lynn, Miss Czajka, and Miss Glidden. Our freshman year was climaxed by our first formal dance, Underwater Fantasy. As we continued on our quest for knowledge, we tumbled into a whole new world. In 1958 the doors were opened by our class officers: Russ Crescimanno, presi- dent; Pat Langley, vice-president; Marcia Duval, secretary; Dave Shilke, treasurer; Bud Haggerty, Representative to Student Council. Everything seemed bright and new, and although we were strangers at first, our acceptance was insured by the election of our Advisory Board members Kathy Grockowski, Eugene Schreiner, Don Brosius, and Stanton Murphy. Our class advisors were Mr. Kania, Mr. Stone, Mr. Lord, Mrs. McGuire, and Mrs. Rathbun. We were proud of our school spirit, and felt that it was excellently demonstrated by the acceptance of Freida Novis and Ellie Weitzman as Majorettes, and Norm Way as a player on the varsity basketball squad. Although we were trampled by Middle- town High School in football, we were sure our participation helped win both basketball games. Several of our classmates were honored by their selection as probationary members of National Honor Society. They were Terry Adler, Jeannette Bacon, Sharon Brazos, Judith Cameron, Howard Child, Gail Gauthier, Katherine Grockowski, Joan Kowal, Holly McPhee, Freida Novis, Eugene Schreiner, Eleanor Weitzman. Suddenly, as we gazed upon the pink and white decorations at our sophomore dance, we realized that the year had gone by all too soon. Sue Birdsey reigned as Queen of Cherry Blossom Time. We were still treading an uncertain path when we took a right turn and came upon our junior year. It may not have been a Mad Hatter’s tea party, but everything happened so quickly that we had hardly any time to think. We elected our class officers Rich Feitel, president; Jeannette Bacon, vice-president; Pam Vladik, secretary; John Grasso, treasurer; Kathy Grockowski, representative to Student Council. Advisory Board members were Ellie Weitzman, Judy Solito, Carol Borowicz, Eugene Schreiner, and Don Brosius. The eleven juniors elected to National Honor Society were Maria Annino, Jeannette Bacon, Howard Child, Gail Gauthier, Bob Griswold, Kathy Groc- kowski, Joan Kowal, Karen Laverty, Art Myjak, Eugene Schreiner and Ellie Weitzman. Several of our classmates were outstanding in various fields. Eugene Schreiner won honorable mention in the Parade of Youth Writing Contest. Kathy Grockowski won the American History Award, while Bob Griswold won the Harvard Book Prize. Ellie Weitzman was cited as the Good Citizen. Our outstanding athletic teams contributed greatly to our ever-increasing school spirit. With several juniors playing varsity football, our team was almost Un-Un-Un. We won the M.H.S. football game, 36-8. Our basketball season was also excellent; we won one M.H.S. game, 43-40; losing the other, 45-44. Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Hagel, and Miss Friedrich, our class advisors, supervised the plans for our Junior Prom held on February 12, I960. The theme was Sweethearts in Wonderland, with Rich Feitel as general chairman . 10
