C ASS PROPHE Y B BOUTEILLER B CARPENTER The woods are growing thick and blrck as Hansel and Gretel wander farther and farther into their depths They have been walking for hours following a narrow path marked Civilization 50 miles and both are dead tired Then Hansel gives a cry Look Gretel' A sign' Look it says l960' The children look at each other in bewilderment Hansel Gretel says in a small voice I think vueve wandered into the future' Not knowing what else to do the children continue to follow the path Soon however rt becomes wider the woods brighten and Hansel and Gretel find themselves on a broad thorough fare Almost immediately they see the Grasso Greco Gustafson gas statxon operating under the sign of the flying wildcat and their close rivals across the road the Country Service gas station run by Augerr Scarrozzo and Wolak Seeing a large neon sign saying Adolph s Hamburger oint they stop for a bite to eat and find that it is managed by Adolph Zawilinskr with Nancy Foss as cashier Emerging from Adolphs they stop to buy the Westheld Bugle a newspaper of world wrde fame edited by Carol Gardner with Anna Waldner as chief reporter As Gretel quickly turns to the Woman s Page and the column by Martha Sackles fashion consultant pianrst is now giving a concert tour in Europe that the renowned rnterpreter Tania Toll is busy smoothing up international relations that Donnie Friedman has been selected as one of the nation s ten best dressed m n 1Lenny Billnn designs rll his clothes 5 that Ted akaboski is spending the summer on 1 Crribbean island strumming a guitar CLenny Gtemza is visiting hrm with his harem of dancing girls Sparkle Girofalo Ruth Conners and Sophie Gayeskij and that after ten years of diligent reasearch the celebrated scientists oan Bloomquist and Faith Wilson have finally discovered a freckle removing cream Turning to the sports page Hansel discovers that the new heavyweight boxing champion Nappy Cslap happy? Despines will fight in Madison Square Garden this eve nrng under the expert management of Ray asse and that Clif Congdon lust won the Middletown Derby but was disqualified when the iudges learned that he is over three years old Heeding a large clean up sign posted by Drck Coleman president of the Janitors Union they deposit the newspaper in a trash can and start down the street Suddenly a mys sterrous character appears and heads for the trash can Ah hah' It is jack Wohlman renowned G man C garbage collectorl As Hansel and Gretel turn a corner they are nearly trampled by an eager group of cub scouts and Brownies dragging their reluctant leaders ane Leone and jim Flowers toward the wllds of Middlefield Suddenly amid clouds of dust grinding of brakes and honking of horns Harold johnson the honor graduate of Mr Copelands driving class careens 30 ' Y I . 2 ' r . . .
