Just look around and you will see and hear the J.V. Cheerleaders. This is a hard-working, cooperative group of I2 girls who have worked diligently all year. With the help of the Varsity Cheerleaders, the J.V.’s have really learned to “Shout It Out.”” During the Football, Basketball, and Wrestling seasons, they put forth great effort in leading cheers to build enthusiasm in the stands. During the varsity football games, the J.V.’s sold programs and had various money making projects such as car washes and selling shakers, T-shirts, key chains, and pennants. The mighty Prexies achieved a 3-6 record. But the im- portant thing to coaches and play- ers was the experience that they had. “I was glad that a lot of people gained experience for which there is no substitute,’ said Coach Moore. In talking about the season Coach Moore also said “It was a lot closer to being a winning season than most people realize.” The Presidents were not predicted to win any games this season. In spite of this they went on to win three games. We learned something this sea- son; winners exist both on and off the field. The scoreboard didn’t show the weeks of summer prac- tice. It didn’t show the sacrifices made by the players. It didn’t show the bruises, the breaks, or the sprains. It didn’t show that they were true champions. They played their games as best they could. And they were champions, to us. Left: Kevin Deas cheers for the Presidents at Churchland. Below: Keith Richardson runs for another touchdown. The basics of sound football were taught to tal- ented players.” This years standouts were James Branch, Dwayne Owens, Brian Ash- bury, Alonzo Drew, Ja mes Cannon, Steve Linde, Quincy Jones, Jerry Nesbitt, Roy Lesueur, Anthony Rich- ardson, and Robert Odom. The team was outstanding. The re- cord was a surprise to many teachers, students and alumni. “The girls were competitive and never quit working,” stated Ballein, ‘I feel we accomplished a lot.” Above all dedication and desire were positive outcomes. Angela Wingate is a 5’9” senior who averages I6 points and 7 rebounds a game. Win- gate is accompanied by Robin Blount, a 5’7” junior who averages I2 points a game. Adrienne Mitchell, a 5’ll’” senior seemed very prom- ising this year,” states Coach Frey. Curtis Baskerville was the MVP wrestler. Rondell Todd and James Edwards were the co-captains. 163 164 V’LL TUMBLE FOR YA’ Deannie Griffin balances so she doesn’t fall off the beam. Although the season ended with- out the gymnastics team not win- ning a meet, the individual efforts and sacrifices by its members should not go unnoticed. A mid-sea- son ankle sprain to senior Eve Goldblatt sidelined her for several weeks. The same injury to senior Shelly Goldfarb eliminated her late in the season and into the district meet. The third senior of the team, Tracy Allen, underwent extensive knee surgery due to an injury she Tracy Allen sits while Eve Goldblatt nervous- ly awaits her turn. sustained in her first meet of the season. Along with these three sen- iors, the rest of the team consisted of four freshmen; Deannie Griffin, Donna Hedge, Diana Mitchell, and Denise Gilchrist. The bright spot of this season's efforts however, came when Eve Goldblatt placed fourth on the uneven bars at the district meet and therefore, became the only Portsmouth gymnast to quality for the regional meet. The team was coached by Joe Bystrom. Coach Bystrom can’t seem to find any of his gymnasts. Deannie Griffin shows intense concentra- tion as she clears the vault. _.. IF THEY STICK TOGETHER ... “This was a developing year for the girls softball team with a 12-2 record.” Arlene Jaulks was a senior who had the highest batting aver- age and won MVP. Lisa Jamison, senior, won the Golden Glove award. They were the only two sen- iors that were starters from the championship teams from I98I and 1982. There was a majority of fresh- men and sophomores that were re- quired to play first string. Coach Staples feels there is the makings of a good team if they stick together. Corrine Krouse is amazed that the Yearbook Staff does not have any more pictures for the softball section. 166 PLAYING FOR A GOAL Top: Teamwork does it again for Selma and Charles Grant. Left: Brandon Perkins watches his kick. “The 3-5 season is the best record we have achieved since we have had a soccer program here at Wilson,” stated Coach Reel. “The three victories we had were against teams in which we had not beaten in regular season play,’ he concluded. There were several outstanding players who helped contribute to the successful season. Among them were Brandon Perkins and Bruce Sykes. Brandon received MVP award and the Bill Ferris Trophy for the highest grade average on the team. Bruce was chosen as spring athlete both for Wilson and for the City of Portsmouth. 167 This was a good year overall for the Varsity team. They participated as bride and groom for a ‘Make-believe Wedding.” The wedding was an ac- tivity drawn from the “Let’s Get Married” unit taught in the Family Living and Home Economics Ill classes. Mrs. Carol Danner guided the students in the preparation of the wedding. Outfits were supplied by Prince Formal. Mrs. Kathy Ailen’s Advanced Foods Class prepared the refreshments for the reception. 182 183 We worked hard this year. Stu- dents worked toward a well de- served vacation. In May, the Ju- nior Class officially became the Senior Class. Amid tears and laughter the Senior Class will be- come Alumni. These are the memories of the 1983-84 school year. The people of Wilson are what makes us special. They are the pieces to the puzzle! And the year, WE GOT IT ALL TOGETHER! wer 185 : | :® i ‘dQ € ’ 2 7 vF —
