Elwood Owens was SCA President. Larry Davis led our football team to a great 8-1-1 season, and Annette Jenkins reigned as Home- coming Queen. Finally February came and we were full-fledged freshmen. As our first year at Wilson drew to a close, we had really begun to get the hang of things. The next September, 1964, we returned as high freshmen. This year we started taking part in Wilson’s extracurricular activities. Some participated in clubs, sports, and tri-hi-y’s; others settled down and hit the books, because before we knew it February was here and along with it came exams. As low sophomores, we cheered on our basketball team, who “invaded Richmond” and brought home the State basketball title. Summer came to an end, and we returned in September, 1965. Tommy Buck led the SCA. and Ginny Lou Morin fitted the role as Homecoming Queen. Febru- ary came, and now we were Juniors— upperclassmen! In the fall of 1966, our junior year continued. Wayne Sykes presided as SCA President and Kathy White was elected Homecoming Queen. February . . . Seniors at last! We watched the mid-term graduates march down the aisle. In one year, though it was hard to believe, we would be in their place. That year during basketball season, our cheerleaders introduced their new uni- forms to the delight of everyone. In June we saw many of our former classmates graduate. We attended our first Junior-Senior Prom and had a wonderful time. September, 1967, marked the start of our last half year. We were very proud to be the “elders” of Wilson. Pat Kreger was SCA President, and Debbie Broughton was Homecoming Queen. Our last football season came to an end on a rainy Fri- day night as our team completed a 7-3 season with a 6-0 victory over rival Churchland. As Christmas came, our thoughts were all turned toward graduation. With the help of our wonderful sponsor, Mrs. Joanne Barnes, we planned our banquet, baccalaureate service, and graduation night and were measured for caps and gowns. As January 23 drew nearer, we began to understand why our high- school years are called the best years of our lives. We looked forward to gradua- tion with excitement, but also with sadness at the thought of leaving Wilson and all our good times there. We leave with the hope that all students behind us will keep up the proud feeling of being a part of Wilson. THE CLASS OF 1967 2 36 E-105 January Class Officers and Advisor. S.C.A. President Bobby Heely greeted us, and the guidance counselors gallantly explained scheduling and sections: third floor is science and math; second floor of E section is languages, etc. We yelled as loud as we could during pep rallies to make it known that we were Prexies, too. Then came our first home- coming, with the thrilling task of making thousands of paper flowers to decorate floats. As proud Wilson stu- dents, we saw Wilson beat the undefeated Tigers of Oscar Smith— definitely a memoiy-making night. Dur- ing basketball season we watched our team go all the way to Richmond to win the State Basketball Tourna- ment, and we knew we were part of a great school. As the year drew to a close, we chose our classes for next year and took our final exams. Another senior class was graduated, and we could not quite under- stand that sad. happy attitude most of them had. Making it a point to smirk and snicker at the new freshmen, we re-entered school and swaggered down the halls, feeling terribly proud of our upper-lower- classmen position. As wel l as digging worms for biolo- gy and stumbling through Julius Caesar, we found means of avoiding the cafeteria and learned all the passable excuses. Tommy Buck held the S.C.A. gavel, and Ginny Lou Morin presided over homecoming, when we beat Hampton before 7,000 excited fans. Our second year at Wilson ended, and we prepared to climb up one more rung. The ordering of class rings was one of the highlights of our junior year. Gradually something had been seeping through to us since our first day at Wilson, and we suddenly realized what strong bonds there were between our school and us. We were respected now, and our behavior was setting patterns for the lower-classmen to follow. Juniors were holding offices in the clubs. Hi-Y’s, and Tri-Hi-Y’s; junior boys were reaching the heights of superior athletic achievements; and we all felt a touch of pride when Walt Tobler was praised in the p apers. Varsity cheerleaders came from our midst, and we also presented the school with Shar- on Adams, homecoming maid of honor, and her two attendants, Debbie Broughton and Judy Rupnik. Ka- thy White made a lovely queen as we watched our team beat Oscar Smith again. Pat Kreger proved her- self an able class president, as did Wayne Sykes as SCA President. The year ended with the “Top Hat” Jr.- Sr. Prom, which we. as juniors, worked so hard to make the best one yet. A girl president rose to the throne again to prove that boys do not really rule Wilson— our owm Pat Kre- ger, S.C.A. President. We elected York Poole our class president and embarked on our final year at Wilson. School spirit was our goal, and we did our best to achieve it. Shirley Valentine and Cindee Brouwer led the cheers. Debbie Broughton reigned over home- coming with Penny Nichols and Linda Boothe at her side as Wilson beat Mauiy before some very proud old grads. With numb feet, stiff joints, and dripping um- brellas, we sat in our reserved senior section and watched our football team tear the Truckers apart in the last game of the season. That was the last Wilson game for Walt Tobler, Jerrv’ Goney, Thad Parsons, and Johnny Viers, and we were glad it had been a victory. To the world, or at least to the city, we presented Penny Nichols, who became Portsmouth’s Junior Miss. But were we content just to capture the highest title? No! We made a clean sweep of the contest, and left the officials flabbergasted as Nancy Cherry placed sec- ond and Marilyn Austin third. Soon dues, working on the class song, caps and gowns, calling cards and announcements, marching up and down the auditorium, even the prom, were over. Only graduation remained, and after that we would enter the world on our own. Emerson once said, “Hitch your wagon to a star.” We hitched our wagons twelve years ago, and now as we look up, there is light; brilliant light shimmering all around us, mighty flashes of burning gold; the blinding light of success. Compiling the largest score in the history of a series dating from 1919, the Prexies defeated the Typhoons 49-13. Back Thad Parsons John Viers Back Varon Rollins Back Gerald Todd Back Churchland After an intercepted Tobler pass in the opening play the Churchland Truckers began their drive that spelled defeat for the Presidents in their second game of the season. Artie Tavlor Tackle Louis Riplev Tackle 264 Lenny Levin Johnny Lewis Lloyd Conley Managers Center Indian River The Woodrow Wilson Presidents traveled to Indian River for their third game of the season. The Braves managed to score in the 1st period. After then, Tobler started motivating his team. A pass to Varon Rollins tied the game 6-6. In the second period Tobler scored and then Brown and Todd went into the end zone for two more Prexie touchdowns which pretty well wrapped up the game. In the last moments of the game, Indian River pushed in for another touchdown making the final score Wilson— 41, Indian River— 12. Monty Matthews Asa Kelly Joe Sears End Center Guard Robert McCarty Guard Norview After two gam es on the road the Presidents came back to Lawerence Stadium to meet an unbeaten team of Norview Pilots. The Pilots who had not won a game with Wilson since 1961 came on strong in the first two minutes and scored. However, the Presidents came back with only 12 seconds remaining in the first half with a 43 yard pass from Walter Tobler to Thad Parsons. The story defense of the Pilots kept the Presidents from scoring further. 265 Oscar Smith The Presidents led by quarterback Walt Tob- ler. collected 21 first downs and scored in even, ' quarter to whip the Tigers. Tobler, who threw 2 touchdown passes and ran for one more, had a near perfect night. John Viers contributed all four extra points. A Wil- son drive came in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter when a Walt Tobler pass was picked olf by Mike Head, who ran 73 yards before he tripped on Wilson seven yard line. Wilson wrestled the lead away and scored by Tobler’s efforts and then Thad Parsons intercepted a pass and ran 70 yards. Then the Great Bridge rally was set in motion and scored again making the final score Wilson 14 Great Bridge 19. Cheered on by an alumni gathering of 5,000, and reflecting the best defense performance of the season, the Presidents defeated old rival Maury 19-6. They did it with a solid running at- tack featuring Thad Parsons and newcomer Charlie Wggins. The climax of the evening was the crowning of Debbie Broughton and the presentation of her court. Ronnie Waycaster Center Dennis Lewis End Barry Wagner Back Martin Morton Back Granby Headed by a versatile quarterback Walter Tobler, Wilson pushed over a touchdown late in the third quarter and handed defending State champion Granby its sixth defeat of the season.
