'l Heliruary Class History In February of 1960, we, the class of 1963 112 entered Woodrow Wilson High School for the first day of our four year high school education. The president of the S.C.A. at the time was Marty Brennaman, and the school's theme was Operation Bootstrap . In June of 1960, we took our first exams, which proved to be a memorable experience for all of us. The next September we became 1 B's. Dickie Lasting was elected president of the S.C.A., and Pat O'Brien reigned as Homecoming Queen. Our football team had a respectable season, and we did our best to cheer them on. Then basketball season came around, and our boys, led by Jerry Lawson, Howard Blackman, and Carl Rhodes, won the District championship. Many of us went to Charlottesville to cheer the team on in the State Tournament. Then, suddenly, we found ourselves low Sophomores. Most of us had gotten the hang of things, and many of us were now joiningvarious clubs. Also, some of our boys were making their presence felt on athletic teams. Ralph Gahagan took over as football coach in September of 1961, and we became high Sophomores. Bobby Allen presided over the S.C.A., and Freddie Sue Turner was our Home- coming Queen. This was the year that Mr. Pat Riley left us, and we were all very sad to see him go. In February, we became Juniors and realized for the first time how rapidly time was passing. Only two more years to go! In September, 1962, we became high Juniors. Julia Dorsey Reed was president of the S.C.A., and Toni Williams reigned over Homecoming. Our theme for the year was Work and Win through Honor and Scholarship . The football team had a fine 7-3 record. During the year we sold informal notes to help the Junior Class treasury, and looked forward to the time when we would decorate for the Junior-Senior. Our theme for the big night was Camelot . In February, 1963, we became Seniors, and in May we participated in Baby Day since we would not be in school the following year. We all had a great time. In September, 1963, we finally made the grade as high Seniors. Elwood 0wens was S.C.A. president, and our theme for the year was Character and Scholarship . Annette Jenkins was elected Queen of Homecoming. The footballteam, led by Larry Davis and Robert Bartlett, was a contender for both District and State championships. A loss and a tie kept us from both, but the team finished with an impressive 8-1-1 record. Fullback Frank Culpepper was the leading scorer in the state, and also set a single game scoring mark with 43 points in the Cradock game. Bobby Bowles was our 4B Class president, and Mrs. JoAnn Barnes, our advisor. We had Senior Themes to prepare, dues to pay, calling cards and announcements to order, and a play to prepare. We were measured for caps and gowns, and then realized there was not much time left. Most of us looked forward to graduation with a feeling of sadness because that meant we would be leaving behind four of the best years of our lives. We of the 4 B Class sincerely hoped that all who graduate after us would realize just what their high school education could mean to them, both now and in the future, and so take advantage of all opportunities. 26
