Februory Closs History In February of 1959, we the class of 1962 1f2, entered the hallowed halls of Woodrow Wilson High School for the first day of our high school careers. We were greeted by jimmy Sanderlin, S.C.A. President, in a special assembly for freshmen. Final advice was given as we were escorted by S.C.A. members through this large building which was to be our home for the next four years. Soon after we arrived the famed bleacher collapse of the Wilson-Newport News basketball game took place in our gym. The next September we were 1B's and our stay at Wilson began to be more enjoyable when every- one joined clubs and got in the swing of things. That year the Student Council was headed by Marty Brennaman, under the theme of Operation Bootstrap, and jackie Drake was Homecoming Queen. In our Sophomore year Dickie Lasting was president of the S.C.A. and Pat O'Brien reigned as Homecoming Queen. A Sophomore Class was organized with Nancy Williamson as president and Mr. Patrick Riley as advisor, and Wilson's first Freshman-Sophomore was held. The Wilson Knights, our swinging new dance band was introduced, and everything had to be tuff or what. Early in 1961 things really began happening. We became upperclassmen at last and the varsity basketball team won the Eastern District Championship. What better way to celebrate than to go to Charlottesville with our team and be excused from school for two days? Glenn White was elected junior Class President with Miss joanne Ricketts as advisor, and Bobby Allen led the S.C.A. in one of its best years yet. School spirit soared in many ways. Freddie Sue Turner was Homecoming Queen. Thoughts were on the future now. In our high junior year, Ralph Gahagan took over as football coach, and Wilson once again had- a winning team. In February 1962 we finally became Seniors. There was a lot of running around and worrying but we managed to get our dues in on time so that we could attend the junior-Senior Prom. We decorated in the theme of Mardi Gras, and it was really beautiful. It was a memorable event for all. Since we, as 4A Seniors would not be in school the following May, we joined the 4B's in the frolicking fun of Baby Day. We were all sad to see Mr. Patrick Riley leave, although, we realized he would still be urging other students to think seriously about their purposes in life. In September 1962, we became high Seniors. TheS.C.A., with the theme of 'Work and Win through Honor and Scholarship was led by julia Dorsey Reed, the first girl president for many years. Toni Williams reigned over the Homecoming festivities. The football team led by Bob Cross and Dale Heely brought honor to Wilson by compiling a 7-3 record, its best in several years. Glenn White was elected 4B President and Mr. Ernest Etheridge was our advisor. Senior themes had to be written, dues were paid, and calling cards and announcements were ordered. We were measured for our caps and gowns and for the first time many of us began to realize how serious this business of high school really was. Most of us faced graduation with the mixed emotions of happiness and sorrow. We had just com- pleted four of the most wonderful years of our lives and now we were going out in to the world to prove ourselves. We of the 4B class sincerely hope that all of those whom we are leaving at Wilson will realize too, that you will benefit greatly from this high school education you are receiving now. We want to wish all of you the best of luck and happiness in your future years. Class of 1962 1X2 26
