iiiiii iiiiiii FOREWORD . .. ln the early days of the Virginia Colony it was the practice of the London Company to grant to each settler fifty acres of land, provided he would live on it and cultivate it. The fifty acres which include the land on which Portsmouth was first developed, were granted, prior to 1676, to Captain William Carver, an officer in the British Army. Captain Carver built a home in the section now called West Park View, and devoted his time to the cultivation of tobacco. ln 1676 he joined Nathaniel Bacon in his rebellion against the tyranny of Sir William Berkeley. The rebellion failed, and Carver, together with a number of other prominent men in the Colony, was hanged. His land became forfeit to the Crown, and re- mained a Crown possession until it was patented by another English Army officer. ln the United States, Portsmouth is regarded as an Old City. We had our beginning in 1752. This year we celebrate our two hundredth birthday. Our background is English. Our founding father was Colonel William Crawford, an English gentle- man, who owned a large estate on the western branch of the Elizabeth River. QThis river was not named for Queen Elizabeth, as is often stated, but for Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of King james 1.5 Colonel Crawford named our city Portsmouth, for his beloved home city in England, Like the English city, we have a large Navy Yard-one of the largest in the world -at Gosport at the south end of the town, and a Naval Hospital at the north end. The streets in the oldest part of the city have English names: Lon- don, Glasgow, King, Queen, Effingham, and Din- widdie. Ships from the old world brought many new arrivals. The English families became interspersed with many others from France, Germany, Holland, ltaly, and from the Eastern Mediterranean countries. Each family brought his own manners and customs. The newcomers were made welcome, and all had something of value to contribute to the growing town-method of prepar- ing food, fashion in dress and styles of furniture. The English architecture appeared side by side with Dutch Colonial, and French types of houses appeared with lovely iron-grilled balconies, We have neither time nor space to describe, in any detail, the great Yellow Fever Tragedy of 1855, when a tenth of Portsmouth's population died of this dread
