The fifty acres which include the land on which Portsmouth was first developed, were granted, prior to 1676, to Captain William Carver, an officer in the British Army. Captain Carver built a home in the section now called West Park View, and devoted his time to the cultivation of tobacco. ln 1676 he joined Nathaniel Bacon in his rebellion against the tyranny of Sir William Berkeley. The rebellion failed, and Carver, together with a number of other prominent men in the Colony, was hanged. His land became forfeit to the Crown, and re- mained a Crown possession until it was patented by another English Army officer. ln the United States, Portsmouth is regarded as an Old City. We had our beginning in 1752. This year we celebrate our two hundredth birthday. Our background is English. Our founding father was Colonel William Crawford, an English gentle- man, who owned a large estate on the western branch of the Elizabeth River. QThis river was not named for Queen Elizabeth, as is often stated, but for Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of King james 1.5 Colonel Crawford named our city Portsmouth, for his beloved home city in England, Like the English city, we have a large Navy Yard-one of the largest in the world -at Gosport at the south end of the town, and a Naval Hospital at the north end. The streets in the oldest part of the city have English names: Lon- don, Glasgow, King, Queen, Effingham, and Din- widdie. Ships from the old world brought many new arrivals. The English families became interspersed with many others from France, Germany, Holland, ltaly, and from the Eastern Mediterranean countries. Each family brought his own manners and customs. The newcomers were made welcome, and all had something of value to contribute to the growing town-method of prepar- ing food, fashion in dress and styles of furniture. The English architecture appeared side by side with Dutch Colonial, and French types of houses appeared with lovely iron-grilled balconies, We have neither time nor space to describe, in any detail, the great Yellow Fever Tragedy of 1855, when a tenth of Portsmouth's population died of this dread PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA BICENTENN IAL 1752-1952 y ,fgtwvlttsetttzzluutltmztulntutrluuutuzruttttu,, C. 5.5. A recorded story The Littlest Angel was played and refreshments were served. The project for December was to brighten up a needy persons holiday by providing useful clothing. A variety in types of meetings was attained this year by appointing different girls to be in charge of the program each month. By using this policy no one person was responsible for more than one program. This idea worked out very well, and will probably be used in years to come. Open House, an annual affair observed during National Education Week, was held at Woodrow Wilson on November 14, 1951. From seven o'clock in the evening until seven- thirty, there was a P.T.A. business meeting in the auditorium. At seven-thirty the parents went to their children's home rooms for a fifteen minute registration period. There they met the home room teacher, and were given a schedule of their son's or daughter's classes. After registration period, the parents pro- ceeded to their designated first period. ln this manner they went through the entire schedule of classes, each one lasting fifteen minutes. Meeting and talking with the teachers gave them an opportunity to find out what takes place in the classroom, and for the teachers to discuss with them how classwork in a course helps the student adjust himself to life situa- tions. All gym classes were held in the auditorium, where the parents were entertained by the Modern Dance Class. Instead of going to a study in a classroom, they went to the library. After the classes were over, the parents were invited to attend a reception in the cafeteria. During the reception, many of the mothers and fathers began to reminisce about their own high school days, and compare them with ours today. W5 QE 5 P50 W A t lass W5 popuu i c QW! A Fred Waring Choral arrangement entitled The Song of Christmas was given, and we feel that it was really special, and gave us something to remember. lt comprises original music, selected ex- cerpts from twenty songs and carols appropri- ate to the Christmas season, and abridged verse from the Holy Scripture. It is the story of the nativity as told in Christmas songs, carols, and Biblical verses. Soloists for the program were Joy Ann Richards, jo Anne Sterling, Diane Hartman, Frances Keel, Elinor White, Alfred Acey, Paul Scarborough, and jack Pettyjohn. Ellen Ann Hunter and Oma Marie Elliot were the accompanistsg and jacquie Triplett, George Arger and Bob Floum narrated. Thus ended our last Christmas at Wilson. 1: Home Ec. One of the most outstanding events ofour Senior year at Wilson was the Dramatic Club's presenta- tion of Cheaper by the Dozen in the auditorium on November 30. Space does not permit us to comment on each individual character-as each member of the cast was outstanding in his particular role. However, we might say that top honors went to john Paul Hanbury for his outstanding performance as the father of twelve children. The able direction of Miss Woodhouse was in evidence throughout the play. Cheaper by the Dozen was well received by both audiences, and was one of the most out- standing productions ofthe Dramatic Club. All in all, it was a delightful comedy, with a well chosen cast. On November 15, all of us seniors were anxious to find out about our favorite college, whether we were planning to go or not. After a brief outline report of essential facts concer- ning the courses of study, we were given an opportunity to ask questions. Probably the most frequently asked questions were those dealing with expenses on the campus. ls it very expensive to eat here? 'How much are freshman beanies? ls there a pawn shop on the campus? Other questions were about social activities, ls it co-ed? How often can you date? How late do lights stay on? A lot of ambitious hopefuls wanted to know if there were many young and good-looking faculty members, and all of us were entertained by some of the colorful personalities representing the different colleges. Later, everyone went to the stadium for the game between the Wilson Presidents and the Hope- well Blue Devils. lt was a well played game, but Hopewell won after a very hard fight. This, how- ever, did not completely dampen the spirit of celebration. During half-time the players of the first State Championship football team were called on the field and introduced to the spectators. Cheerleaders and members of the clam of '26 por- trayed several events in the history of their senior year. This was by far the greatest and most successful Homecoming celebrated at Wilson. It was from these tested performers that the Prexie coaching staff formed the nucleus of this year's successful team. Leading the array of lettermen was big jerry Mingis, who made just about everybody's all star team at his tackle post. Running with Mingis at the tackle position was jim- my Wynn, a rugged 190 pounder who has one more season of eligibility left. The guard positions were so well manned by J. W, Frankos, Tommy Stearns, Dick joumee and james Parrish that Stearns was switched to center, where he stood out as a linebacker all year. This left Frankos, a three year man, and journee and Parrish to stop the opponents up the mid- dle, which they did very capably. At the ends were Cully Dalton, Carter Wiggins and Bob- by Bunting. These three boys bore the brunt of the end play all year, and certainly deserve credit for their aggres- sive and hard play. Wiggins was also honored in making many all star teams. In the backfield the only lettermen were jessel Curry, Blackwell jackson, james Henderson and George Riggs. Curry was the offensive sparkplug all year at quarterback. His flashy paging, running and kicking brought him All State honors, along with Mingis and Wiggins. jackson, al- though plagued by injuries at the first of the season, came back strong at the fullback slot. Rounding out the list of lettermen were Henderson and Riggs, who were outstand- ing halfbacks all year, with Henderson coming into his own late in the season. The 1951 football season brought many thrilling moments as well as a few sad ones. The upset win over Lynchburg's Hilltoppers, which stamped us as a state power, was quite a surprise to local sports- writers, who wrote that we would be lucky if we won four games all season. This, of course, was said before the schedule started, but once the 'Passing Prexies' got under way the writers climbed the Wilson bandwagon. After almost a month of drilling in the hot sun under the watch of head Coach Woody Gray and his assistants, Charley McClurg, George Davis and Pete Mills, the Prexies were ready for their opener with the South Norfolk Tigers. It was expected to be a fairly close game, but proved otherwise as the Orange and Blue won 34-13. It was in this game that the locals were branded the 'Passing Prexies' as Jessel Curry con- nected for two touchdowns with passes to end, Carter Wiggins. The Presidents traveled to Newport News for their fifth contest. After the opening kickoff, the Prexies got their only scoring chance of the night, and took advan- tage of it to gain a 6-0 victory. Continually pushed back into their own territory, the forward wall of Wilson managed to rise to the occasion each time. I .. NJA . li ,- . ,,f' '- s 1 . , X 1 y M V ' N . f . . They never got here, however, asacontinuous torrent of rain made the fieldacomplete sea of mud on the day of the game, as well as the following day. Consequently the game was cancelled. Next came the showdown with Hope- well's Blue Devils, undefeated in 29 straight games. The Prexie's champion- ship hopes all hung on downing the Blue Devils. An added incentive was that it was Wilson's Homecoming. Over 18,000 fans saw Hopewell win a close 20-13 de- cision. Almost everyone present agreed the Devils had the best team, andthat the Prexies were gallant in defeat. Moving to Norfolk to meet Granby's Blue Comets, the Presidents came home with a squeaky 17-13 victory. Trailing in the third quarter, Curry returned a punt 75 yards for the winning touchdown. The game was played in a driving rain storm. The last game featuredaThanks- giving clash between the Prexies and the Cradock Admirals. Led by Mickey Riggs, one of the state's finest backs, the Admirals had high hopes of upsetting the Prexies. They saw their dream blasted, 20-7, as the Graymen won the hard fought contest. The interest aroused in gym classes was carried over into the many types of competitive sports. Due to the intramural plan, as many girls as are interested may participate in volley ball, basket ball, and soft ball games. Some of the other athletic activities provided for the girls were swimming, bowling, and interpretive dancing. The latter was only introduced last year, but quite a few girls have shown their interest by remaining after school for this class. One of the most recent sports to be taken up by our students, and found to be very popular, is field hockey. ln order that we might add this to our list of activities, several girls were selected to acquaint themselves with the rules of this game, and then teach the rest to play. lt has been re- ceived with much enthusiasm, lt is impossible to estimate the importance of athletics in our school curriculum. In addition to the fun and satisfaction derived from participation, we may add the growing appreciation of such im- portant virtues, necessary to good character build- ing, as fair play and clean, healthy living. CHEERLEADER Behind every football team and every basketball team there is another team whose job is to keep the fans and players all riled up. Last spring, out of eighty hopeful fresh- men, sophomore, and junior girls, a squad of ten was selected to be the '51 - '52 cheerleaders. Selections were made by qualified faculty members. In spite of frequent cases of laryngitis throughout the year, our cheerleaders have been successful in fulfilling their aim, which was to create more school spirit. 1' 4,-4 gh, W ' ' LW '11 ,' 3 9 Y Front: Hawks, Whaley, Triplett, Smith, McNair Back: Hartung, Butler, Host, Jones, Pearce n , .
