MUSICAL VOCAL DEPARTMENT The Vocal Department has had two directors this year, the first of whom was Mr. Moore. He served in that capacity for one month before leaving for the Air Force. During this month, the new Mixed Double Quartette was established, and the entire Department gave an assembly program for the student body, which was one of the most beautiful and inspiring programs of the entire year, Mr. Ira Austin took over when Mr. Moore left. He joined the faculty in time to prepare the annual Christmas program. The Sextette and the Double Quartette sang for several club meetings throughout the city during the school year, and made several out-of-town appearances. 44 lla Sex er il groups were sent to the Dlstrlct Contest H1 the Sprmg ind the Nllxed Chorus Cxrls Clee Club Sextette and Double Quartette took an lmportant part 1n the Sprmg Festlval Bemg assoclated xuth a xocll group offers llldl vldufils a Splelldld opportumty to dex elop thelr ITlLlS1C3l talent and g1V6S members an opportumtw to make many new frlends ORGANIZATIONS Dejamette Butler Redd Green Rrchards Hodges Pettxjohn Xir Austm MIXED CHORUS Fzrst Rmb I Curkm C Tarkenton C Robertson B Thom rs P Ellen D Purser I Tumer S Hardl son J Sterlmg 1 Danlels F Sawyer C Batghelor Seumfl Rau, R Phllllpe -I Sawyer N Butler S Xvvflght A Slmmons j Nentura D ones D Wtddlt N Newsome N1 xvlllldmb C Bradlev M Lawrence S Castme C Brinkman D Woodydrd Fourth Rau, I Pettwyohn I Cnfflth B Borum N1 Houghton I Drew E Smlth V Vmson . ? Besides the many different clubs in which we participated, there were various other features that made our school days more' pleasant. What would those years have been without the floats, pa- rades, football games and dances that accompanied Homecoming. Remember those swell Dramatic Club plays, some humorous, some sad, all terrillicl Who could forget how cute all the seniors looked on Baby Day with their water guns, short dresses and bubble gum. We all waited patiently for the day when we could put on our bow ribbons and play with our dolls. Although only the seniors could participate in Baby Day, all of us could enjoy the gaiety of the P.-T.A. fairs. From the dancing contest to the notion booths, all things were tops. And then came the night we had anticipated from the beginning of our school career, the junior-Senior. How lovely all the girls looked in their beautiful gowns, and the boys were more handsome than ever in the white dinner jackets or dark suits. A night to remember, but so were the rest of our activities. ure-N 'w ,ng J., ' is, 3 ff - .s '-' ,asf-' K ,. ,,,,,5,,,,h 5 I Q. 58 1' X V ' Q. 1-, , H f .' - ' 4.3 ,. -13 1 E ' V .-Q' I - Q , D- fran-f. Bobby McCarter, Dutch Schwalenberg, Roy Hendricks, Eddie Sharrett, Spec Male, and Bobby Criesbach stood out on the gridiron, while Rufus Dalton, Bubber Barnes, and Pop McFadden were equally as good on the hardwood. Others were Norman Newbern and .Iimmie Alexander, both brilliant track men, and Sonny Richardson. who made his mark as one of the best high school pitchers in the Old Dominion. Girls, too, participated in sports. Training beganjn gym classes which paved the way for intramural sports. Louise Cul- pepper, Iva Lou NVilliams, Eleanor Carter. and Doris Purser were just a few of those active in girls' sports. Also included in thc sports round-up are the cheerleaders. They did much to promote the practice of clean sports and a finer school spirit. Class members of this group were Sue Stublen, Noel Hewitt, Barbara Harshaw. Audrey Cumm, joyce McNair. and Shirley Archer. Sports played an important part in our school life during the four years. They were not only entertaining, but also helped to mold our characters in the way of clean living and fair play. yt .1 s .3 ' -.4 an , ,A ',. Y 51' vu' K . if! 4' .. , A:-1214 f .Q ,I',.v . f . . Although not a great team, it was an aggregation which produced a host of thrills for Prexie followers. In his second year as head coach, Woody Cray, ably assisted by line coaches Charles McClurg and Sonny Davis and backfield coach Pete Mills, welded a strong offensive unit which scored at least two touchdowns in all but two games. Although the defense looked spotty at times, it functioned well enough to hold the opponents to an average of a little over seven points a game, while Wilson scored, on the average, eighteen points per game. 8 f x ,Q , ro 4 1 .yu V Q The Prexies opened the season by winning their y , ,, A A 'ff' Hrst six games before taking it on the chin from L I , A 1 C' K ' l t ' Maury and Hopewell on consecutive week-ends. w A y A 4- K- f , However, they finished strong, scoring decisive vic- .. PENINSLILA DIVISION CHAMPIONS As the spring season rolled around again, Coach XVoody Cray started drilling his baseball squad in preparation for the defense of their Eastern District Title. Having Sonny Richardson, ace hurler, back for his last season, the Presidents were given a good chance of winning another title. As this went to press, the Orange and Blue record stood at 3 won and 3 lost. Building around eleven letterinen, Coach Cray Welded a formidable defensive team to go along with his returning power hitters and excellent pitching staff. VVith only a handfull of this yearis team graduating, the Presidents should be a baseball power in the Eastern District again next year. In other competition the Prexies came in second in the State-Indoor-Meet and third in the Tide- water Meet. Captain Billy Jones, Charlie Sidwell, and James Henderson formed the nucleus of the track squad which seemed headed for another successful season. Although Davis did an excellent job with this year's team, he will be forced to rebuild his whole team almost entirely as most of his cindermen are receiving their diplomas this june. 5 4 1 .Wi , 1 Y - 1? ,g George Riggs 5.2 llx jerry Mingis D! 4 5 Coach Davis 5 if 6- 5 z JIIHIHY Jean 4.44 '31 Rufus Cotten md lommy Lu mgston -sw' XYW Danny Rlpley '30 -pair' -r. VVhat a gala time we are going to have on this first reunion of the Graduation Class of 1951! Here we are at Virginia Beach, in the night club of former classmate Bert Warren, who invited the entire class for an evening of entertainment before leaving the Earth. So many familiar faces-Aubrey Facenda's band is here. Danny Ripley is his first trumpet man, and thereis Dick Brown playing sax. The singer is none other than our own Peggy Sue Thrift. That featured dancer is Dot Cherry, and that clever ju gler is Howard Atkins. Our taile is the center of attraction with Ioyce McNair, Miss America of 1955, and Florence Helms, the noted authoress, both sitting with us. Across the room I see the well-known opera singers Robert Borum and Nancy Butler, and with them are several people who flew down from New York-Barbara Hall buyer for Sacks Fifth Avenue- Carvel Underwood new editor of HARM the famous surgeon Bernard Lipscomb and that popu lar artist Marilyn Beazley Rocket for the Moon now loading on the roof announces Winston Krieger the well known sports announcer Everyone IS led to the loading station by Mahlon Parker the play boy of Miami What a magnificent rocket and just think it was designed by the famous architect Robert Cofer and built by Sam McFarland Plans were made by Admiral William Freund for us to v1s1t classmates on movie location on the Moon while on our reunion 9 ao... .4 iii Is everyone here? No, wait! Here comes Olympic track star, Spec Male. Finally we are in the air, but wait again-Dot Brown was late, but being a trapeze artist, we drop her a rope and she tumbles in. Now we have time to look around. There's the owner of the Boston Red Sox, Doris Lawrence, and the new manager, Louise Culpepper, with their famous pitcher David McCrickard, and first base- man Bitsy White. They are talking to two Yankee players, Donnie Lawrence and Teddy Miller, and pro-football players Bob McCarter and Bob Griesbach. In the back of the ship the medics are already conversing. Dr. Phyllis Beckworth and Psychiatrist Pat Kirkland are talking with nurses Iva Lou VVilliams and Ann Walker. I hear Audrey Cumm, T-V entertainer, and her producer Barbara Harshaw signing Hillard Silver Broadway comedian for their show Here comes the Perkins twins Congratulations Bessie for winning the Olympic diving award and Marian for swimming the English Channel Why there s the woman scientist Madam Shirley Farfel with the X Bomb scientist Larry Bermanl Clarence Baker new vocal teacher at Wilson passed by and here come some more Wilson gradu ates who are teaching at their Alma Mater Coaches Sonny Richardson Pop McFadden and Roy Hen dricks and there s Ella lean Roesen Spanish teacher Eleanor Carter of the Physical Ed department and Coralyn VVh1te the new Math head gl 22x 7 7 7 7 7 ' ' , , 7 3 o n , . a . . , .,' ' l , i 5 is R 5 gze.fQ q ' eiiaE5f t-its I if T: 153 iii? Oh, yes, several members of the President's cabinet are here. John Spence, the new Secretary of Treas- ury, and Enrico Di Paolo, the Secretary of State. George Burns, Boston attorney, is in deep con- versation with Willard Allen and Clinton Duke, of the firm, Obliging Morticiansf, Forrest Thompson, Dean of Women at Longwood, is talking with college professors Jane Terrill and Shirley Castine. Well, now it's time for a midnight snack, which Judson Rodman, owner of Rodman,s Super- Barbecue, brought along. Whish! ! ! Eddie Sharrett and Danny Ripley just passed us in their jet plane. They'll beat us to the Moon, and they left their ranch in Texas after we did. Well, the snack is over, and New York model, Shirley Archer, is coming toward me with Madeline F ennell, who is an interior decorator. They told me about Rufus Dalton, the notorious outlaw. It semes that he was caught last week by Neal Catewood, D.A. Pat CMugsyJ Owens, mem- ber of the Dalton gang, was caught, too. It's rather sad they can't be with us. There are social workers among us, too. Sitting together, no doubt discussing their profession, are Barbara Lawson and Audrey Conklin, who now manages the Portsmouth Child Care Center. Here is Bubber Barnes, manager of the After Death Insurance Company, and his eflicient secre- tary, Fassie Mae Rhodes. We have other secretaries in our midst, too-Joyce Leonard, Betty Comstock, and Margie Heath. Over here are Carol Amdursky and Sandra Pilzer, who own their own millinery shop, and Joyce Keel and Carol Backman, Lieutenants in the WAVES, and Ann Silvers of the WACS. Finally, after our dash though space, we are here. Virginia Murden, the author of Moon Daysv met us, and is taking us to location. Here we see producer Vernon Vinson talking to script girls Peggy Groton, Jane Hobson, and Janet Wiggins. There is Barbara Thomas, costume designer, talking to directors Jimmy Drew and Carter Valentine. Cameramen John Sittler and James Keel are busily grinding their machines. The stars of the production are none other than Jean Ventura, Jerre Ashberry, Bobby Mason and LaRue Askew, and I discovered Choice East is their hairdresser. We could only stay to watch several scenes being taken, and to appear in the mob scene. Now we are piling into the rocket again for our trip back to Earth. Here we are again at Warren's, exactly nine hours after our takeoff. With goodbyes to every one, we go our merry ways, hoping to meet again in Hfteen years. By- PHYLLIS HONEYCUT1' -mug..
