H. Walker, who, at that time, was head of the Matheinatics Department of Woodrow WVilson High School. The purpose of the club is to foster enthusiastic interest in mathematics especially among those pupils who have a natural leaning toward the subject as evidenced by election of the higher courses in mathematics. The club has for its aim not only supplementing that information gained in classroom instruction, but also introducing the young would-be mathematician to the parlor tricks of mathematics, so to speak-the game and puzzle side of mathematics. Sometimes a mathematics play is presented as the program of the meeting. In December the club gave a play for the Activities Association members of the student body, having as its theme a mock faculty meeting. The play was written by the club president, Louise Pope. The club this year is studying the needs of the Mathematics Department of the high school with the idea in view of leaving as a gift at the end of the year some tangible evidence of its interest in the progress of mathematics. At this time the council was under the supervision of Miss Phillips. Yes, believe it or not, a woman. Aided by a few boys and girls enrolled in the school, Miss Phillips produced very successful entertainment. The present organization was begun in 1926 LII'lClCT the champion in advisers, lVIr. L. C. Paclden. By this time the council had become very small, presenting an opportunity for an entirely new organi- zation. Asking the voluntary assistance of various students to form a council, Mr. Padtlen continued for the first year taking an active part in the presenting of the moving pictures. At the beginning of the second year there were enough students with experience to take over the active duties. The Motion Picture Council has continually advanced in its equipment and methods. VVilson took the lead in the changes of motion picture production. VVe were the first school in the state to use both thirty-Five and sixteen milirneter sound projections.. VVe were also the first school to purchase a large, auditorium, sixteen-milimeter projector. Y The Motion Picture Council takes pride in its achievements and progress and plans to continue to be as progressive in the future as it has in the past. K ILSON'S 1942 football season got off with flying colors with victories over South Norfolk and Hopewell. Although the South Norfolk game was expected to be a push-over, the Presi- dents had to hght hard to win 6-0. f AY l l l if Myer. MAC ADAMS CHARLES FLEMING CHUCK OTTNEY ff: 4 VVhen the VVilson eleven defeated the Hopewell team, 13-6, it was the Presi- dents' first win over a Hopewell eleven in seven years. Mac Adams, Wilson end, returned a punt 60 yards for touchdown. The Presidents held a highly favored Roanoke eleven to a 0-0 deadlock in a tough game. This was considered by many as the best game of the season. The Wilson eleven traveled to Lynchburg to suH er their first defeat at the hands of the Glass Hi eleven, 13-7. The game with Newport News, won by Wilsoii 14-0, was regarded as the highlight of the season. It was in this game that Chuck Ottney, VVilson back, broke all VVilson records when he made a spectacular 75-yard runback to score a touchdown. The greatest upset of the season came when the Maury Commodores de- feated the favored Presidents 25-0. The championship-bound Hampton Crabbers overcame the VVilson eleven 14-0. The Presidents played a tough game with a tough Central Hi QWashi11gton, D. CJ team, but in spite of a last-minute rally, the VVilson team lost 24-20. . Wilson closed its football season with a Thanksgiving Day game with Granby Hi. Although the Presidents showed superiority throughout the game, the Granby Comets won 7-0. Mac Adams was voted end on the All-Tidewater team and also on the second All-State team. Chuck Ottney and Earl Ratliff made fullback and guard, respectively, on the second All-Tidewater team. Harry Cornwell and Chuck Ottney were given Honorable Mention for the All-State team. Jack Guthrie, Broughton Tanner, Harry Cornwell, Charles Fleming, Aubrey Coggins, and Marty McLaughlin, received Honorable Mention for the All- Tidewater team. me V .... - ..., REI:-:,:,' J 4' 'M 1 --ii ,H A . ,Ag 61:01 TQ i- ......, ' . if 'fl M is W H- ill' --:jeg '-., 'f,,,.,,, f,y'..: 'fig i:i:,gT,- - -:-'3...-4. 2 H Q, -Bgvitg 1 . BASKETBALL ILSON started her basketball season with a rush, and although some defeats were suffered, we can feel justly proud of our team. Looking over the entire season We hnd that the Presidents played eleven games at home and ten away. Oi the eleven games at home eight were delightful victories and three were suffered defeats, but ofthe ten away, seven Were defeats only by a small margin. Altogether, this proved to be a very successful season for Vlfilson, Winning twelve out of twenty- one games played. W'ilson,s lirst appearance was made on the road, taking on Alexandria Hi- Clllexanclria. Val, Central Hi CVVashington, D. CJ, and Bethesda Hi CChevy Chase, hldj, respectively. Alexandria proved rather tough to handle, but Central and Bethesda were just mere push-overs. Coggins and Lane proved to be the star pupils on these assignments. V The Presidents then journeyed home to take on the Gridiron Club composed of stars of former years. The Presidents easily took the game to the tune of lS-23, making it the lirst time a lVilson team has ever beaten the alumni. High point man against the elders was Coggins. On -lanuary 2, the Naval Receiving Station team was the guest of 'Wilson, but they returned to the Naval Base with heavy hearts caused by defeat. The sailors didn,t seem to click, so -the Presidents saw a chance to run away with the game. This season the Presidents had two encounters with the hffaury Com- modores. They were equally divided between the two teams, so everybody went home happy. The most exciting game of the season was Wilson's entanglement with Granby on February 13. Every- one was held breathless during the entire game. The score was closely tied during the four quarters, but Wilson finally came out victorious with a score of 33-30. Granby was reported to have left the court hve seconds before the game whistle was sounded. The other engagements resulted in victories over South Norfolk twice, Hampton, Cradock, 172 Chemical Company, and john hflarshall. De- feats were suffered at the hands of Coast Guard, Granby, Thomas Jef- ferson twice, Newport News twice, and Hampton. VVilson finished third in the Tidewater Conference with four victories and four defeats. YVilson contributed four players to the mythical All-Eastern Squad. They were Aubrey Coggins, elected on the hrst team, and Ed Drew, Aubrey Sweet, and Bill hflartin, elected on the second team. So, we come to the end of our basketball season and we feel that it has been a creditable one. We wish to thank our hrst team com- posed of Aubrey Coggins, Bill Martin, Aubrey Sweet, Basil Yost, and Ed Drew, and our second team, who so expertly backed them up, for such a successful basket- ball season. VVe know that if Coach Archie Israel hadnlt been there to give them courage, the season would not have been so successful. As The VVonder Boys, the first team entered the Y, NI. C. A. Conference. They succeeded in taking the title and were rewarded with a banquet given by the Lions Club. ,rv - no rf l f 1-:f, M' T ' 1'5 M Q i g V B TEV P 71, ::. TENNIS VVITH Mr. Beck as coach, the tennis team had a good chance for a successful season. Three members of last year's team re- turned for tennis this year-Eugene Wvilliams, who is the captain for this year, Mac Adams, and Frank Hill. The try-outs included: Bob Himrod, James Hooker, Brian McGlynn, Edward Earl Hudgins, Gilbert VVard, Carroll Robertson, Euclid Hanbury, Bill Martin, and Ed Drew. Plans were made for matches with Maury, Suffolk, Richmond, Norfolk Division of VVillian1 :Sz Mary, Newport News, and Hampton. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Ill HIS year saw the inauguration of a new Physical Education program. The government has ordered that all boys and girls will have to have physical training to make them lit to help in our country's war effort. The primary objectives of this program are strength, endurance, stamina, coordination, and agility. It was found by a national survey that the average boy could not pull himself up a twenty foot rope or vault out of a trench chest-high. The new Physical Education program should correct this physical unlitness. The boys take calisthenics and they also work out in the stadium. This work-out consists of running around the track, scaling walls, running up and down the steps of the bleachers, and other exercises. The girls take Swedish calisthenics, and they play basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, deck tennis, and other games. The boys are under the capable leadership of Coaches Wild and Israel and the girls under Miss Ruth White, with the part-time assistance of Miss Mary Rice.
