The fog descends upon the land As a curtain dropped from the sky, As if lowered by an unseen hand. The pines give vent to lachrymal sigh. The buoy rings from the ridge of rock, In mournful, minor tones, As it wrestles in the waves' mad lock, And save for the wind, the trees, And the waves, I am alone. ALF J. MAPP, JR. From My Window Written from a window of Woodrow VVilson High School 7 l The trees dim sentinels on the horizon stand Giving a dreary aspect to the land, Which I View through clouds of mist, Hanging o'er the earth in gloomy list. The skies cold gray and overcast, No clouds, only a gray blanket, vast, From whence a steady rain, Beating monotonously upon my window pane. A lone seagull shrieks his way across the sky. Uttering his wild and weird sea cry. Smoke from distant chimneys ascends And then lazily curling, slowly bends, And returns to the damp earth again, To be swallowed by the incessant rain. A dark, gaunt, sycamore raises its branches bare Into the chill, damp, desolate air. ALF J. Under the able leadership of Coach E. A. Wild and his assist- ant, Mr. Archie Israel, many improvements were made over the teams of the past few years. The VVest Nottingham Academy Team and the Arlington Eleven, each credited with seventeen game winning streaks, came here to have their outstanding records smashed by the Fighting Presidents. West Nottingham was defeated 6-0, and the Arlington squad lost by a 9-6 score. On our Thanksgiving Day game the Granby Comets came over to win in a toss with the Presidents, 14-17, but sweet revenge is planned for the Prexies next year. It is hoped that a VVilson-Granby grid- battle will be an annual Thanksgiving Day Classic. Philmore Joyner and Charles Brown claimed honors on the All-Tidewater squad, while Brown went so far as to make All-Southern. Incidentally, Brown is the only Wilson gridder to gain this honor since the great Al Casey. THE PLAYERS Ai.vARo Com-:LAND JACK CRAIG STUART CIISHMAN IVAN FISH J. D. Although Coach Kibler had five lettermen, his first string consisted mainly of boys who had not had any previous experience in varsity competition. They were Yost, Martin, Coggins, and Drew. They were credited with nine wins out of their gruelling twenty-one game schedule. The schedule got off to a fast start with the Presidents winning in their first two contests. A trip to North Carolina brought victories from Tarboro-46-16, Rocky Mount-29-28, and one defeat from the VVilson, N. C. quint which came through in the last minute to win, 30-28. Four home games showed the Prexies' weaknesses due to the new players lack of varsity experience. They got on their feet, however, and walked over South Norfolk 45-31. Two cage battles with the Granby Comets proved the teams were of equal strength. The Comets took the first game 21-20, while the second was left to the Presidents 16-14. Both matches were played nip-and-tuck all the way. The two defeats issued to the Maury Commodores in the ,39-'40 season were revenged by two victories over the Presidents this year. Leo Kampman and Odell Benton, co-captains, deserve much credit for leading the new, inex- perienced squad through the tough season. THE PLAYERS LEO KAMPMAN ......, ....
