They are as follows: Jim Garcia, treasurer, John Celiz, boys' vice-president, Rollie Slagle, president, Aida Lugo, girls' vice-president, and Barbara Huffman, secretary. THE THEME chosen by the Athenians,W '56 for their graduation was: For we are ihe lovers of beauty, yet simple in our tastes, and we cultivate the mind without loss of manliness. This class has lived up to its name. The name Athenian means citizens of Athens, the capital of Greece. This city was and still is the capital of Greece and con- sidered the center of culture and intellectual achievement. Although small in number they achieved many honors in Wilson High. The class Valedictorian was Barbara Huff- man. Barbara had straight A's throughout high school except for one instance when she received a B. The Salutatorian was Bob Hill, also an above average student. The complete class of Athenians had the highest grade average in perhaps the entire history of Wilson High School. Out of the 57 members there were many leaders including Jim Johnson, who led the Student Body through the winter semester. The Athenians com- pleted their Sr. year with the customary Sr. activities, the Sr. Picnic, Tea, Prom, and Breakfast. This class, the Athenians, has entered the adult world to become leaders of our nation as professors, teachers, fathers and mothers of a new generation. 9 ATHENIAN COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN-ROW l: Eslher Mariinez, Bob Hill, Joan Banelli, Mike Hupp, ROW 2, Yorum Gelzler, Mary Ann Tamburelli, Jackie White, Jean Spalione, Marvin Goldman. A CLASS OFFICERS: Annette Deal, Girls' Vice-President: Marc De Fevere,Presidentg Richard Montague, Boys' Vice-Presidentg Pat Helbling, Secretaryg Nileen Carrier, Treasurer. I On that memorable day of January 6 the cornerstone was laid for the Egyptian pyra- mid when the class of S'56 donned the powder blue and white and began their Senior activities. As the Egyptians of old, they sought to make the motto chosen by the class a reality for, in vain we build the world unless the builders also grow. Lead by Presi- dent Marc De Fevere they grew academically through their school work and socially through the many class activities. The pyramid began to develop'when the picnic and tea were held and the second and third layers of blocks were laid. Two last maior Egyptian activities were the Senior Prom and the traditional breakfast. Forming the apex of the pyramid, the last block was laid on graduation night at the East Los Angeles Junior College when the Egyptians reached the end of their high school days. Under their exceptionally fine leadership, student participation in activities and school spirit increased tremendously. During the year this great spirit never decreased. The students gave their support to activities such as the cake walk and noon dances, which enabled the school to have better dance bands and purchase a iuke box. Mr. Mehlman, Sponsor of Leadership Activities and Stu dent Government, is pictured with the very capable vice presidents of the student body. THIS YEAR the student government had one of the most successful semesters ever. Sponsor, Mr. Mehl- man, points out that students in this are the cream of the school. It is comprised of student body cab- inet officers, commissioners and outstanding stu- dents. Activities of this class are innumerable. They sponsor dances, handle all fund raising drives, hold the student elections, keep the scrapbook, and handbook, assist in Student Body ticket sales, dig up the talent for the talent assembly, and partici- pate in the carnival. The class also sends repre' sentatives to student councils of other schools. The dances were the Kickoff Capers, Sno-ball, Cotton- Tail-Capers, and the Hawaiian Dance which fea- tures a lei sale. This class tried to familiarize the students with their school and promoted good re- lationships between the students and faculty. The Student Government class also studies parliamen- tary law and all business is conducted with use of Parliamentary Procedure. Each day a different mem- ber of the class is president and gets a chance to get up in front of the class and lead the business for that day. lt's fun to get up in front of class. lt is a very valuable experience to all those who par- ticipate. , . - aw with the utmost skill and knowledge. 2 r .J I t zo, LETTERGIRL PRESIDENTS-lW'56I Pat Sharp, and lS'56l Carol Conzevoy were kept busy rendering their unlimited services to the school and community. A REGULAR CLASS LY in Leadership. 58 MEMBERS listen to a committee report. if THE LEADERSHIP CLASS here at Muleville has a four-fold purpose. They try to improve the individual's character, personality, leadership abilities, and to increase their knowledge and appreciation of our school. Many strides forward have been made since Mr. Mehlman, sponsor, has taken over. The class is highly organized, and they ac- complish a great deal of service during each semester. By developing the individual's leadership capabilities through work in oral presenta- tion, committee work, and written reports, Wilson is assured of an efticient student government. LEADERSHIP CLASS promotes democratic voting. WINTER ADVISORY BOARD-ROW I: Nancy Yamada, Danny Duran, Leslie Craig, Linda Kortan, Nellie Cuellar. Ucfmwqiiowcal The Advisory Board is composed of two members from each home- room, one regular member and one alternate. These students discuss problems which arise on campus. Under the guidance of Roger Johnson, the winter Advisory Board set up a new way of voting. Each student had to register in order to vote, then vote on his own during lunch. This new system proved to be very wise. Only students really interested in the election voted, and the turn out was tremendous. Bob Blake headed the Summer Advisory Board, and they have set up an election board, which also takes care of tabulations and pub- Iicity. They sponsored an auction booth at the Carnival, which turned out to be a success, as did all of the other activities which they under- took this term. '3 Ui , xx. E , 7 9.41. They had programs celebrating Pan-American Day and Cinco deMayo, lMexican Independence Day.lTheirannual tield trip was to a Mexican movie and then an to a gay time at Olvera Street. Another attraction was a Mexican guest speaker from State College. The club sup- ported all the school activities. The pur- pose of the club is to explain Mexican culture and to spread an appreciation of things Mexican. '?7vi21fLI71244zf14 ACOMPARIATIVELY NEW CLUB on campus is Future Teachers of America. The club is organized to make contacts with people in the teaching fields which they have chosen and allow students to investigate teaching as a possibility before they make a final choice. The members attend many conferences designed to assist them in their choice in the teaching field, as well as having excellent guest speakers. Right along with gaining new information per- taining to teaching, F. T. A. held a swim party and dance which proved quite a social success. 64144 5546 THE WOODROW WILSON CHESS CLUB is divided into two parts, the Chess Club and the Chess Team. The Club is for com, petition against other schools. This year Arthur Katz and Michael Samson have lead the team to victory by defeating Roosevelt, Jefferson, and Huntington Park High Schools. This qualified the team for the city play-offs. Q7-M46 AS EARLY AS THE 8TH GRADE many girls set their goal to became a member of Wilson's Letter- girl club. This club which has been at Muleville for many years has established for it self a Hne record of service bath here and in the community. Each and every member is an out- standing girl with many fine capabilities in citizenship, leadership, and scholarship. The l955 football season brought the inauguration of a bigger and better Color Day under the direction of Pat Sharp, W. President. lt was then that Jim Johnson and Lucille Chazaro were crowned Mr. and Miss Wilson. At the winter blood bank there was an outstanding amount ol donors. Posture Week was the first big project for Carol Consevoy, S. Pres. An Easter Service Proiect for the Mental Hygiene Ward at the General Hospital was a sample of the service to the com- munity given by these girls. SHAUANA SORENSEN-S. Cheerleader, Gloria Quirk -S. Wilson's Fine Arts department has a great deal to boost about. The students who apply themselves in this field are well rewarded. This year Wilson has had occasion to be proud of many of her students in art, music and drama. Gold Keys were won by Fran Hollis and Charles Gail in the Na- tional Scholastic Art Contest and Fran's work was hung in the Carnegie Institute along with other Southlanders. Wilson's drama classes have grown this year to an en- rollment of over 60 students. The activities of these classes havealso widened with participation in four speech tourna- ments and the Pasadena Playhouse Contest. This constituted only a portion of the speech and drama program which in- cluded the production of two Pulitzer Prize plays, Thornton Wilder's Our Town and the Kaufman-Ferber hit, Stage Door . Both were under the direction of Wilson's drama in- structor, Mr. William Gass, who also initiated a chapter of the National Thespian Society on Wilson's campus for the first time. The best performances awards went to Lea Jachnuk and Rollie Slagle for Our Town and Pat Lala and Roger John- son for Stage Door . -.. eff-sfmaL,yr'f '- af ,m i 'i ' va .WF .-1.92 'fini Mr. Kaelin's Art Production Class is a very active group when there is the need of a iob well done. WlLSON'S i956 varsity football season was very disheartening with each game being a very close battle. The Mules were brilliantly coached by Mr. Bill Samarin, who took a very inexperienced group and made them into ci fine team. The defense proved to be very strong against every opponent. The offense ran a powerful sin- gle wing with a powerful line and hard running backs. The Mules ended the sea- son with one win, two ties, and two de- feats. The team's outstanding players were Rich Pulcifer, lall-cityl guard, Rich Riding, lall-northernl center, Blayne Ferguson, lall- northernl tackle, Mike Scurto, lall-northernl guard. The backfield was particularly inex- perienced with one returning Iettermang this did not prove a decisive factor as the Mules gained many yards. The team really found itself in the last three games, when each player worked with the others wind- ing up a season that will be long remem- bered by many. The surprise of the year was Mike Habley of the J.V.'s. Never out for any sport before, he came out and ran like a veteran. On the l0th grade team, Jack Herrington and Terry Puckett com- bined to finish in 5th and 6th places in the Northern League finals. Alfonso and Abel- ardo Lopez ran in the league finals after playing football all season. Alfonso placed third in the finals. Wilson's captain, Ruben Yuriar, finished 8th in the varsity classifi- cation. Another pleasant surprise was tenth grader Doug Lindberg who was moved to the Varsity and behaved like a seasoned performer. ln the city preliminaries, run at U.C.L.A. on a very windy, rainy day, Ru- ben Yuriar placed 20th for the Varsity, Abelardo and Alfonso Lopez finished 8th and l0th, the only Mules to qualify for the city finals. ln the lOth grade David Garcia scored a big surprise by finishing 22nd in leading the lOth grade team across the finish. sei' CROSS COUNTRY SQUAD-Row I: Ruben Yuriar, Abelardo Lopez, David Garcia, Mr. Ross, Tony Vidana, Frank Deckon, Roger Moon. MEM THIS YEAR'S VARSITY was a team to be proud of down to the final gun, They played every game like champions, but fell short of this honor by their final defeat at the hands of league champions Belmont, 60-57. Their fine play and their will to win has brought further credit to Wilson High School. This year's co-captains, all-league Jim Garcia and Rich Montague, spark-plugged your varsity to provide many thrills and much pleasure for you. MMM UNDER THE HANDS OF COACH IVENER, the Cee and Dee Teams both ended up with a 5-5 record. WITH THIS AGAINST THEM, they entered their first game against Franklin and won it. The leading scor- er was Tom Tanimoto, but Gordon Fisher led the team in shooting percentages. Besides Tanimoto and Fisher, Wayne Cassety, Gary Cito and Ralph Breitler played good ball all season long. Coach Ivener has developed these teams for the coming Varsity teams. The two left handers, Jim Shaw and Gordon Fisher, both ninth graders, look like the best prospects for future years. The Cee's were led by .lim Shaw, who was the leading scorer and also had the best shoot- ing percentage. The Cee team played good ball all year, having been badly beaten in only one game. Most all of the games were very close until the last minutes with the game being decided in that time. Most of the rebounding was handled by Manuel Nitzberg, Mike Sandahl, Howard Bloom and Ray lang, which rounded out this well balanced team. The Dee team also ended the season with a 5-5 record, but had the disadvantage of having no practice games. Wilson's second in the League finals cinched its second in the League. With the new 20 foot rope, Arnold Van den Berg set a new school record of 4.3 seconds as well as gaining his tie for first in the Northern League. Dickie Caro ended his high school gymnastic career by placing in thfee events in the city finals. Caro took a second in all-around, third on rings, and third on long horse. He was also awarded four Gold Medals and one Silver Medal in the Northern League Finals. Even with the team composed mainly of lOth and llth graders, Coach Ross did an excellent iob of coaching his team to a second place in the Northern League. The relay team unotficially low- ered the school record to 3107.0 in the meet against Belmont, losing by less than a yard to the league's fastest squad. Marc De- Fevere, with a mark of 50' 5V2 , was the outstanding shot putter in the league. Char- lie Gail and Wayne Thomas were the team's top sprinters, while Benny Davidson turned in very consistent performances in the hur- dles. Ruben Yuriar and David Nickerson in .r fe 'ML We the mile were very close to the record on several occasions. Other outstanding per- formers included Art Servanti in the 880, Art Hernandez in the 440 and Broad Jump, Verne Chapman in the sprints and Shot Put, and Richard Montague in the Broad Jump. All-Northern Rich Riding, Rich Montague, Blay'ne Ferguson, Denny Lunetta, and .lim Fry. Mike Scurto was the most versatile player to grace Wilson in a long time. He sacrificed personal acclaim as catcher to help the team as its first line pitcher. He was the first-string catcher and best hitter. Rich Montague was another big-gun. His timely hitting and smooth fielding contributed greatly to the team's success. To all this ability add the constant hitting and field- ing by such other stars as Denny Lunetta, and rookie Rich Zubiate, and the clutch playing of Hank Vega who was brought up from the B's along with Mitch Dimkitch, young star of the future. Coach Cuccia instructs co-captains Danny Lunnetta and Richard Montague. rt' 4' 'D 'Q 9 ww 1 v' Led by Co-captains Ronnie Hull and Sr. Aye Denny Hayworth, and well- coached by Mr. Lambert, the Burrobabes held their own in league competition. The outstanding hitting of power men Gary Garafalo and Paul Cohen supported an otherwise green J.V. team. The bulk of the team was made up of some very promising ninth-graders. They were Jim Manzulo, Jerry Heinemann, Jimmy Lunetta, and Ronnie Becker. First base was equally shared by Doug Lindberg and Jerry Fry. Handling the catching chores was Ronnie Hull, and Vince Dehl held down at third base. The J.V.s, while not turning out a championship team, accomplished their purpose of making and developing of future Varsity greats. With good depth and balance, this was without a doubt one of Wilson's strongest all-around organizations ever to hit the hard courts of Muleville. The top honors of this outstanding collection of players were shared by Ralph Garcia, Wayne Martin, Bob Parker and Bill Smith. These of the first line were backed by a group of less experienced team members who improved rapidly and contributed greatly to the team's success. As in i955 Mr. Naslund again coached our Mules to a Northern League crown.
