Where no stagecoach or covered wagon could go, the pack mule did, and brought comfort and lux- ury to many otherwise impenetrable spots. Seaman always finds time to look out for the welfare of Wilson students. Her pleasant, cheerful manner and willingness to help have made her popular among students and faculty alike. -l-LNIGAA. Vice Principals Charles Sutcliffe and Grace Leadingham chat on school problems. Guiding Wilson's Mule to a happy high school life is in their line of duty. As sponsor of the Girls', League, poised Miss Leadingham finds one means of doing this. Mr. Sutcliffe, who spon- sors the Key Club, is known for his genuine concern for boys' problems. Miss Seaman, Miss Leodingham, and Mr. Sutcliffe give us a glimpse of the good old days, when their hearts were youna and gay. Our iovial registrar, Mr. Norman Morgan, the enthusiastic director and organizer of the Varieties. Each mule train had an owner or own- er's agent, who looked out for the mules, the muleteers, and the cargo. The agent for the taxpayer owners of Wilson's mule train is its principal, who must oyersee students, faculty, and school subjects alike. Helping to oversee the mule trains were the mule- teers and helping our principal is a corps of exceptionally efficient ad- ministrators. OFFICE STAFF-Beaming with efficiency, the Wilson office staff carries on business with a smile: Miss Teresa Garcia, Text-book Clerk, Mrs. Lucile Petralia, Attendance Clerk, Miss Lila Hoisington, General Clerk, Mrs. Nell Howard, Secretary, Miss Misako Okada, General Clerk. And the train itself, so staunch and spirited, responded to muleteer guidance with the same eagerness or re- luctance with which we respond to our daily lessons. 4 Q FROM TOP: Electro-magnetic inductions is one of many modern fields covered in the physics course. I S L 9 -' 'f CENTENNIAL OFFICERS-Spurring the W'50 class onward to provide happy memories of its Senior Aye term were Chuck Luciano, president, Beulah Agu- lian and lrvin Berger, vice-presidents, Sheila Garrett, secretary, and Grace Zimowslci, treasurer. 28 CENTENNIAL SEALBEARERS-These happy graduates received gold seals on their diplomas to signify at least four semesters' membership in the Scholarship Society: Marilyn Canter, Sylvia Rawson, Murray Via, Diana Larson, Dorothy Hensen. Upholding the observance of our state's Centen- nial, the class of Winter '50 celebrated 100 years of California growth by choosing the name of Centennials. Graduating iust one century after California's admission to the union, the members of this, class took their places in the California life which their namesakes made possible. Led by President George Luciano, the Centennials had a rip-roaring picnic, a lovely senior tea and play, and a delightful prom. And so they were led by a bell-mare, an experienced mule who carried no cargo but wore a musical bell to which the other mules were slaves. Without the bell-mare, the train was unmanageable. ln our student government, we, too, have leaders from among us. By our mulas cabeseras, from the student body president to the club officers, Wilson's mule train is led in a truly democratic manner. m - f V BOB NO. l-Distinguishing Bob - Olivas' term of office as W'50 student body president was his xg successful and untiring work to produce the spirit of sportsman- ship in all student activities. Backbone of the whole student government is the cabinet, which makes Muleville laws and policies. The T949-T950 cabinets performed miracles in service to the school. The tremendous jobs of student body ticket sales in the fall and annual sales in the spring were finished with typical Wilson spirit. Proving they don't favor all work and no play the leaders sponsored two student body ticket dances, the Sox Hop and the Shamrock Shenanigans, and instituted a party for junior high ticket holders. EDITOR-Efficiently turning out one of the best papers Wilson has yet to see was Mort Zebrack, our handsome Summer editor-in-chief. A mule train entered a mining camp amid much excitement, for the miners were anxious to read the newspapers it brought. Each Friday citizens of Muleville awaited the Hitching Post, Wilson's newspaper, to learn the latest news, views and gossip, but little did they realize the work involved in turning out those four pages. Before each issue reached its readers, the HP staff and print crew went through a hectic week of reporting and editing. Fall, 1949, saw a new system of alternating staffs successfully tried. A favorite pastime of the muleteers was singing around their campfire as night drew close around them. Here, too, music is a favorite form of recrea- tion, due largely to Muleville's excellent music department. A Cappella, most sought-after sing- ing organization, contributed harmony and gaiety to assemblies, community programs, and the Varieties. The Senior Girls' Glee sang beauti- fully at the Christmas musical. The whole com- munity helped raise money to uniform the Band. Stirring music is a forte of the Senior Orchestra, their renditions at the Varieties and the Lincoln birthday assembly was proof of the puddin'. In the living drama of California, the mule teams played an important scene. Wilson's drama groups played a hero's role in campus lite in 1949-50, providing entertainment for the rest ot- the school and getting a foundation for further dramatic training. This year saw the first three act play to be presented in several years. The colossal Gas- light Varieties presented the panorama of California, from the days of its Indians, through Spanish rule, pioneer days, and the Gay 9O's . This extravaganza, given to raise money for band uniforms, brought together the combined talents of the music drama, art, English, home economics, and industrial departments. '1fi 'Outa our way! -Rudy Vizcarra and Alan Page. The Mule pigskinners fought through a tough schedule in '49, and showed up nicely until superior manpower and the ever-present breaks of the game took their toll. The season's initial encounter saw the boys going down to defeat to John Muir, 12-6, in a trial tilt. The Mules' game, highlighted by Paul Clark's brilliant passing, had a touchdown pass from Clark to Gary Bohnsen called back. This would have been the tying, if not winning, score. '9fThe opening Northern League fracas saw Wilson pitted against the Poly Parrots. The Mules completely outclassed the Parrots for the first half, and at half time the score read Wilson-6, Poly-0, Rudy Viscarra having run 60 yards to pay dirt. Wilson again was knocking at the door on Poly's M-yard line when the gun sounded. After intermission, the Mules found trouble going through Poly's massive line and went to the air, which proved to be disastrous. Poly intercepted three passes, two of which were run back for touchdowns. Wilson couldn't get going and went down to defeat, 19-6. fYThe following Friday was Wilson's time to howl, for they knocked the Marshall Lawyers on their collective ear to the tune of 19-'l3, making the fourth year in a row that the Birristers have been trampled under Mule hoofs. Highlights of the game were the running of Rudy Viscarra and Joe Amato, who accounted for all three of the Mule touch- downs. The defensive play of Gene Burg, Myron Berliner, John Durbin, and Bruce Lloyd was the differ- ence between victory and defeat. The greatest play of the day saw Paul Clark heave a fifty yeard pass to Red Nelson in the waning minutes of the last quarter, to set up Wilson's final score. f4'Outnumbered, out- manned, but not outfought, Wilson fell to the army ol' Huntington Park, 46-0. Early in the game Bruce Lloyd recovered a Tiger 'Fumble on the Lincoln 15 yard stripe. Three times Paul Clark drove, and on the third down he crashed six yards into the end zone. He converted, and Wilson led, 7-0. Lincoln matched this in the second quarter, and at halftime the score stood 7-7. Wilson came back with a rush in the third stanza when Rudy Viscarra scored from 20 yards out, and the score stayed at T3-7 until, with 4 minutes to go, Wilson's aerial defense fell apart, and Lincoln threw two desperation passes for touchdowns. Final score: Wilson 13, Lincoln 20. fYUnder the arches at Belmont, Wilson faced its final opponent, and, as always, the inevitable depth of the opposing squad kept the Mules to their off season. The Hilltopers over- came a half time lead by Wilson of 7-6 and won 19-7. Wilson scored when Rudy Viscarra ran 70 yards on a kickoff return. Even the gallant efforts of Gene Burg, Myron Berliner, and John Durbin, who were brilliant on defense, couldn't change the outcome. WA record of eight wins and two defeats is proof of the quality of the almost invincible varsity five. This well rounded team was stopped by only one foe, Poly, which was rated one of the top high school outfits in the nation. Coach Settle put on the floor a team excelling in all departments. It had speed and good shots in boys like Raymond and Graybill, height in Olivas, and defense in Jones and Hamlin. The squad was laden with reserves. Good boys like Lapiner,'Henry, and Cameron were always ready on the sidelines. All hail the new champs, the B basketball team! The Jayvee players showed their heels to the rest of the league with their professional-like play. Sparked by Britt and Cantos, the squad gave no doubt as to who should be crowned the season's champs. The B casaba men were exceptional on the basis of their showing in the second round of play, when they topped all comers. Instrumental in copping the crown for Wilson were Schiada, deadly lefthander, Shinerock, ballhandler su- preme, and Johnson, rebounding demon. C8.D The Mule mighty mites showed up nicely this season with the C's making an acceptable record of five wins and five losses and the D's boasting an eight win, two defeat accomplishment. Sparking the C's were such outstanding casaba artists as Captain Harrier, fighting guard, Foutz, high point man, and Garcia, hook shot specialist. The almost champion D's, like their big brothers, the varsity, lost only twice to Poly. Coach Carl Cain is rightly proud of such fine D players as Holt, Gelalich, Nye, Baltz, and high point man Stanley. D BASKETBALL-ROW 'l: D, Stapp, G. Fetterhoff, S. Alt, K. Smith. ROW 2: l.. Baltz, C. NEW to Wilson, Coach Robert Ross not only can coach a greot team, but you should hear those magic fingers on the ivories. Strength, coordination, and form. These are the things which make an excellent gymnast, and Wilson this year had more than its share of these. On the list were such mat stars as Motter, three times all- Northern on the parallels and twice winner on the rope, Huntoon, three times all-Northern in free ex, and Elder, a three-time winner on the longhorse. Other Polar Loop medal winners were Jerry Copeland and Ted Laudice. Always a dangerous foe to face, the squad took fourth in the league, beating Belmont and Poly. In center field was the Galloping Greyhound, Dick Adams, Wilson's great centerfielder. Dick's hitting and speed broke many a pitcher's heart. At rightfield was Wayne Nelson, who, along with Adams and Carrasco, made up one of the finest out- fields in the city. The Mule pitching staff consisted of the two mighty southpaws, Frank Bennett and Jerry Mason, who alternately chucked Wilson to the crown. 7frWith spark, hustle, and drive, qualities which Coach Trigg's teams always have, the B horsehiders came through their season with a second place league spot. Top chucker was southpaw Johnny Fouts. Dennis Holt did a fine job behind the plate. On first was heavy hitting Louie Baltz. Making up a terrific keystone combination were Ruben Ybarra and Tiny Gelalich. A TRAINER-Couch Jay Settle our boys to a championship. The flashing spikes of the Mule Cindermen flew around the loop and into third place in the league standings. Opposing squads which felt the sting of the Wilson spikes were Lincoln, Marshall, and Bel- mont. While on their way to a third place standing, the Mule boys were revising the record books right and left. Richard Adams, better known as the human spring, leaped his way to two records. Davey Rosellini and Duane Telliano also set new marks in their respective specialties. The B's and C's came through with a fairly good season. Placing reg- ularly were Emil Britt, shot- put, Jiminez, 100, Henry, 1320, Kersh, high hurdles. C stars were Don Ifill, record breaker in the 660, Pugliese, ditto in the 100, and Garcia, 180. These three boys took the brunt of the attack, win- ning most of the time, but the superior manpower of the rival schools was too much to cope with.
