Down the halls you bravely charge on Mapping up your enemy,- Cleaning, sweeping, ever scrubbing, Surging on to victory. Busting locks and washing windows, You have proved yourself true blue. Grimy walls and muddy floors Have yet to spell defeat for you! Day by day the fight continues, But we know you'll always win And boost your cause of cleanliness. We salute you, gallant men! -Wanda Lou Philpott 8 -warm 'lr 'f :wTwS:Q?T 'W' ODE TO THE CAFETERIA STAFF Orchids to all ye cooks supreme And your tools of pan and pots, Baking, brewing, ever stewing As you bend o'er cook stove hot. Day by day you fry and boil, Scallop, saute, likewise broil. Dishes fit for kings and princess You produce through sweat and toil. Your salads perfect, soups sublime, Pies and cakes without a flaw, Sandwiches and macaroni, We consume with joy and awe. Culinary works thus marvelous Ought to be not without praise, So we laud you to the skies Cooks, we'll love you all our days! -Wanda Lou Philpott 9 FLYING EAGLES MARCH BY ROY LEE HARMON GLENN SALLACK Let's give a cheer for Beckley High The Eagles are out to do or die l.et's make the echoes ring We never give up, we never give in We battle along until we win So let us sing, sing, sing Now why should we fear a mighty foe We do our best and lay them low To gain the victors crown So pep it up for the Eagle Crew A hand then that is hardy and tried and true And ready for renown. M iss Flying Eagle 37 GOLD RUSH MEMOIRS As the forty-ninersi' of a century ago went forth to the new territory of the west in search of a wealth of gold, we, the forty-miners of Woodrow Wilson High School, went forth into new territory in search of a wealth of knowledge. The year of '46-,47 marked the beginning of our long journey. We chose Peggy Daniels, President, Randall Broyles, Vice-President, Patsy Lively, Secre- tary, and Ben Stewart, Treasurer, as our prospectors for this expedition. Mr. Ray Martin served as our assayer. Ably equipped with picks, shovels, and other needed materials, we started mining for our nuggets of knowledge. Our first reward for our incessent hard work came in the form of a Sophmore Informal Party. This party gave us a clue to the rewards to be obtained in the future. Then we all looked forward to the main event of our sophomore year, the Colonial Ball. But due to a heavy snowstorm, it was postponed until spring. We decided to call it a Spring Formal , and everyone had a gala time. It was the end of the year, and we had met and overcome our first obstacle to success. We took a short vacation and started back with renewed effort in the fall of '47, digging harder than ever. We picked our new prospectors for the year. They were: Dick Curtis, President, Pete Ferguson, Vice-President, Patsy Lively, Secre- tary, and Lois Sanford, Treasurer. Our first reward this year was sharing a co-championship with Stonewall Jack- son. This was the first football championship Woodrow Wilson ever claimed. In November our Junior Barn Dance was held. The gym was decorated with straw and corn stalks, and all of us enjoyed the slickie slide and Jennie Crack Corn . Another memorable event of the year was the production of our Junior Class Play, Arsenic and Old Lace , which was directed by Mr. Saunders. Highlighting the events of the spring was the Junior-Senior Prom, which we sponsored. We carried out a theme of One Night In Arabia , and most of the dec- orations were paper orchids. Finally after two years of hard work, we reached our ultimate goal-our Sen- ior year. Dick Curtis was chosen President, Chis second termjg Don Hodson, Vice- President, Sonja Mae Carper, Secretary, and John Earl Lilly, Treasurer. 38 GULD RUSH MEMOIRS Things started happening in rapid succession. Before we hardly knew it, our football team rushed through a completely victorious season, and claimed the state championship trophy. This year Randall Broyles was voted the outstanding ath- lete and was awarded the Heisman Trophy. We experienced something new this year. After the games, youth dances were held at the newly erected recreation building. During the fall our Flying Eagle Band took two trips to Lexington, Virginia. The first, to play and maneuver for a Washington and Lee University game, and the second, to play for the Washington and Lee Homecoming Game, this time by command of the students and faculty, who raised funds for this purpose. In the beginning of December, the seniors presented their annual play, 'LDoub- le Door which was a tremendous success. Closely following this event was the Football Party, and all who attended truly enjoyed it. The gym was elaborately decorated with large figures of our opponents which had been painted by various students. The annual Sadie-Hawkins Dance, sponsored by the Y-Teens, was held this spring. Everyone caught the spirit of the party and came dressed in true Dog- patch' style. Our newly-organized Thespian Troupe played host for the State Dramatic Meet which was held in April. Then the time came when the Juniors were to be our hosts for the Junior-Sen- ior Prom the last and best social function of our high-school career. lt was a grand night, from the time we entered with that certain someonen, until the last strains of Good Night Sweetheart could be heard no more. We thought that prom to be the most wonderful, the queen and her attendants the most beautiful, and the decor- ations to be the most elaborate of any ever held. Full realization of graduating hadn't come until the first strains of Pomp and Circumstance March reached our ears. Then-in the few minutes before receiv- ing our diplomas, a rush of memories filled our minds, and we re-lived our high- school days in all their glory. And it is these same memories and thoughts that are left with us, as we, the youth of today go out into the world as adults of tomorrow. We leave behind these Gold-Rush Memoirs as a journal of good times to be treas- ured in the history of Woodrow Wilson. Joan Rose Joyce Wald 39 Most Popular ...... Typical Senior ..... 'E-1 61 Jerome R. Van Meter has just completed his first twenty years as head coach at Woodrow Wilson. This year he presented his supreme achievement to us in the form of our second State Football Championship team, in addition to the usual excellent teams in the other sports which have established Woodrow Wilson High School in the realm of the state sport circles. Congratulations, Coach, may your next twenty years be as successful! Capably assisting him this year were Coaches Victor Peelish and Lawrence Wiseman. Without the training they have given to our teams, surely we could never have received the Laurels which we now wear so proudly. It is through their un- tiring efforts that we have done this, and we now salute them by hoping, in the future, they will continue to lead us in the betterment of our athletic endeavors. 62 0, C- FOOTBALL ay twhmlaa I Ii A 'S' 1. By study- ing diligently and mastering your subjects in school give you the fundamental principles by which you may acquire an education. To be educated is to be able to cope with circumstances and overcome obstacles that you will run into on life's pathway. Be sure that you make good use of the very wonderful advantages provided by your parents that you may be better fitted for life's journey than they.
