A Time-Life Production. the movie is a docudrama concerning tin- 1957 racial desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Woodrow Wilson was chosen over many different high schools in the nation because of its architectural similarity to the Little Rock High school, and because most of the production company facilities arc in Dallas. Joanne Woodward starred as Kli .a-beth Huckabea, the Dean of Cirls at Central High, and many Wood-row W ilson students were used as extras. The two hour made-for-TV movie was aired on CHS in February. Kseaping from stardom. CRISIS AT Portable dressing rooms provided stars with a place for a quirk change. The evening's festivities consisted of a box supper followed by an entertaining show presented by the Concert Choir and Variations under the direction of Marca Lee Bircher. Then the Drama Department presented the one-act play, “Monster Soup , directed by Luanna Cole. A raffle was held with approximately $2,000 worth of prizes, with the grand prize of a weekend for two at the Fairmont Hotel. The Student Council sponsored a can food drive for needy families. The winning second period class was given a party. The Concert Choir and Variations presented their annual Christmas Concert. The festivities reached their climax on New Year's Eve when the senior girls held their annual dance. The great year is finally here! — 1981. HOMECOMING 1980 Although the Homecoming Game against our old rival Skyline actually started at 7:30 p.m., preparation had long been underway as cheerleaders. Sweethearts, band members, and athletes worked many long hours preparing for this special event. However, the hard work and hours spent seemed to pay off. The Wildcats fought hard against Skyline in a close game that ended 6-7, in favor of the Raiders. At the half, the Wildcat Band and Sweethearts performed to “One” from A Chorus Line, and senior Sweethearts performed the traditional Homecoming Kick Routine. Despite the loss, anticipation for the dance the following night compensated for any disappointments suffered. Under a thousand glittering foil stars, the Homecoming festivities began. The celestial atmosphere was created by members of the Student Council, and disc jockey Joe King provided the evening’s entertainment. Shortly after midnight, came the announcement of the Homecoming Queen, Princess, Duchess, and Countess. Amy Manning is announced Homecoming Queen, and is presented with crown and roses. UNDER THE STARS Decorated for the assembly, the auditorium awaits the cheer of spirited Wildcats. Jeanne, Gina, Michelle, and Marquita show Sweetheart style. A TOUCH OF SHAKESPEARE Woodrow Wilson High School Fine Arts Department presents Cole Porter's When the hrrwi th Katherine is finally conquered, everyone rejoice in “From This Moment On. On February 20 and 21, the Woodrow Wilson Fine Arts Department presented Cole Porter's classic Kiss Me Kate as its 24th annual Broadway musical. Kiss Me Kate is a backstage fable, a “play within a play,'' and deals with the lives of a troup of Shakespearean actors and their presentation of The Taming of the Shrew. An egotistical ex-married couple, portrayed by Gina Surratt and Doug Gordon, has been reunited to co-star in a revival of this Shakespearean comedy. The uneven course of their reunion off-stage is paralleled by the stormy plot on-stage. Rehearsals for this year's musical began in early December under the direction of Marca Iazc Bircher who was assisted by Patricia Hardman, a former Wfood-row teacher who flew back from her new home in California to choreograph Kiss Me Kate. The long hours of rigorous rehearsing were compensated for by the overwhelming response and favorable comments of those who attended. Kiss Me Kate proved to be among the finest musicals presented at Woodrow. Call the FBI! Skip I-eggett portrays an absent-minded multi-million' a ire Harrison Howell. Rianca find it difficult to “meekly place her hand beneath the sole of Katharine states her unalterable opposition to males in “I Hate Men. her master's boot.” The audience is transported to a typical street scene in Padua, Italy. Petruchio orders Katharine to “tell these headstrong women what duties they owe their lords and husbands. Upon his marriage to Katharine, Petruchio begins to reminisce about his life as a single man. 45 Gina Surratt and Doug Gordon portray the flamboyant ex-married couple. Margie Hardwick eeem convincing in “Always True To You In My Fashion . 46 IT’S YALENTIME Business is booming! Sam i counting the profits. On Valentine’s Day everyone got into the spirit of love with the Jr. Girls selling carnations, The Student Council delivering candy-grams, and the Valentine’s Day raffle sponsored by the Varsity Cheerleaders. 47 SCHOOL DAYS Through the course of a year at Woodrow, many memories will be formed that will remain with us long after our high school years are over. However, the memories of the hours spent in the classroom are certainly ones that will Ik especially unforgettable. On these pages, the Crusader photographer has observed typical W'oodrow classrooms . . . working, playing, and learning. Scott Weber exercines hin artixtic abilities in Mr. Chapa'a art claa . Concert Choir members are busy learning good choral technique . Mias Finger has a smile of encouragement. Mr. Cargile offers advise to his Architectural Drafting student . Of course it’s not all work and no play, as Mrs. Jameson’s American History class exemplifies. Bill Barnes works patiently in the Youth Action Center, keeping Wildcats out of trouble. Shawn Carroll seems to have forgotten to study. 49 WILDCAT COUNTRY o 10 OUTSTANDING SWEETHEARTS During the football season, nine girls were chosen as Sweethearts of the Week. Dedication and hard work were criteria for choosing these special drill team members. Named as pictured above: Cassandra Clemmons, Debra De La Rosa, Pam Edwards, Tracy Hiser, Vivian Malone, Kathy Mayer, Ann Seeker, Taney Taylor, and Tracy Vaughan. 51 SENIORS 52 AT PLAY 1 GIFTED WILDCATS Woodrow is fortunate to have many talented students. Although every gifted person at Woodrow could never have been covered, these people deserve recognition for their achievements in music, art, athletics, and academics. Jennifer Fosmire was girls swim team captain as well as a National Merit semi-finalist. Gina Surratt and Margie Hardwick made Who's Who Among American High School Students for their achievements in music and dance. Roque Trevino and Gary Bonner were All-Metro football players in their junior year. Julian Anthony was named semi-finalist in the 1981 National Merit Competition. Sondra Beck won first place in the school-wide Art Contest. 54 THE COURT IS NOW IN ORDER Each year, as part of Mrs. Jameson's American Government class, a mock trial is held. All students in the class participate as lawyers, judges, the clerk, witnesses, and defendants. The jury is chosen from another class so it will be neutral. The lawyers compose testimony for each witness who must learn his part. Lawyers also write their own opening statements, closing statements, and cross-examination. This all results in an excellent presentation. 55 LUNCHTIME IS MUNCHTIME! Our roving Crusader photographers, in constant quest of photographing Wildcats in their natural habitats, found their way to a special room on the third floor. What better place for interesting subject matter?! Kim Lueke finds her feelings for cafeteria food hard to express. I like Woodrowburgera, but they don’t like me.' For Chris Case, lunch is a time to reflect on the hard knocks of freshman life. 56 Seafood, anyone? Tracy Hankins exemplifies lunchroom nourishment. Indi-gestion. For the approximately fifty-five sophomore and junior girls who tried out, the long hours of try-out preparations were a test of endurance. The Sweetheart hopefuls were judged on sharpness, kicks, smiles, and general appearance. On Friday, December 19. newly elected Sweethearts were presented an envelope with a list of those chosen. Each of these students spent hundreds of hours working to insure the production of the 1981 Crusader. Editor Tracy Hiser’s organization was essential. Zina Castanuela’s bookkeeping insured the funds needed for printing costs. Steve Cargile’s cover design captured the staff’s theme in a striking manner. Kathleen Swann’s dedication as head photographer enabled the staff to meet deadlines. Kathleen, along with other photographers — Amy Dye, Melanie Corley, and Allyson Aynesworth, put in many long, nerve-wacking hours.
