A person can almost always turn around and find a smiling face. - Rachel Trevino 5 Happiness is like the summer skies all clear and blue, It comes to us in joyous times of old and new. Happiness is just a feeling which comes and goes. It seldom ever comes when you are feeling low. Happiness is a feeling you can depend upon, To brighten your day like the rays of the sun. Happiness can be enjoying the sights and sounds of the world. Happiness can be just looking at a baby squirrel. Happiness can be just sitting in the peace and quiet, Thinking of some happy place or historic sight. Happiness can be wishing that you are very wealthy. To me Happiness is just being alive and healthy. - Michael McQuinney What makes me unique is that there is no one else in the world like me. - Miss Parrett look at the tree through tear-filled eyes, remember the future, then ask yourself why. why you're the one with no friends by your side, and yet you’re the one with more problems to hide. look in the mirror, the young face you see, now look again, can you still see that tree? the face is now wrinkled, all worried with fear, the young face you had no longer is here it died with the days you now wish you had. it died with the seasons, your mom and your dad the future is fine, if you know where you’re going, you can’t succeed without knowledge of knowing. look in the minor, can you still see the tree? your face is now young; oh look, can you see? the friends you once had are now friends again. Remember the future; the past has no end. - Linda Waddle 7 There tends to be a feeling of closeness, and togetherness at Woodrow. - Jim Hardwick - Mrs. Conner Our school spirit outlasts any other school’s spirit. Our confidence is stronger than the claws of defeat. Lynn Ehrhardt When someone is hurt friendship is a great healer Michelle McDowell I like the overall feeling you get from attending W.W. The people here really make you feel like you belong. The school spirit is fantastic and it makes me proud to go to Woodrow. L. Long. With Woodrow becoming a four year school and the addition of 470 freshmen, have come some problems for principal Wayne Pierce. Commenting about the new students, Mr. Pierce expressed pleasure in heading a larger school, although some slight problems have arisen. ’’We’ve been fortunate,” said Mr. Pierce, ’’that everything has gone smoothly this year. The new students will greatly add to uniting Woodrow’s school spirit. Magnet schools’ emphasis on early childhood education and greater involvement of the community is a result of the April 7 desegregation plan handed down by the federal court. The standardization of grade levels are k-3 childhood centers, 4-6 intermediate schools, 7-8 middle schools, and 9-12 high schools. October 14, Woodrow Wilson, with the help of the P. T. A., brought back a lot of memories by sponsoring Spirit Night. This event was well received by the students, teachers, and parents . For the most part, the students enjoyed the dance routines performed by various students. The Older Folk enjoyed sitting back and watching memories parade across the stage arrayed in fashions they once wore. Over all, Spirit Night was a big success. 71 Hey man that’s real groovy. This year this event was held at Lakewood Country Club, on December 12, at 2:00. While the girls feasted on a lovely buffet style luncheon, the senior members read their last will and testaments. As always, the best was saved for last. This year's captains placed whistles around the necks of the new 77-78 captains. MB ■ Bad weather gave Woodrow students a chance to stay home and build snowmen with their families. IT’S TOO COLD On October 16 and 17, Woodrow was forced to close down because of heater problems. The temperature was 18 degrees outside and snow covered the ground, but our heating system was out of order. Mr. Pierce made the decision to cancel classes for two days, but the downtown administration reversed the order on the third day. Students had to attend classes in a very cold and damp building. During those days, the most common sound was Achoo!” [ I Senior girls seem to agree, thumbs up, that the Wildcats will beat the Raiders. IT’S TOO HOT! On October 28, students held the annual bonfire at Woodrow Hill. It was a big celebration for everyone involved. The evening started with the lighting of the fire and ended with speeches by football players on their strategies for defeating Skyline. The fire seemed to bring good luck to our team because the following night they defeated Skyline for the first time ever. 11 was so crowded around the bonfire that this group of girls turned to Haskell Stricklen for warmth. 1. 75 76 HO! HO! HO! This year the Spirit of Christmas and a host of Christmas cheer spread throughout Woodrow. In the principal’s office stood a gayly decorated tree, an annual tradition. The choir and band gave a performance that brought the house down and concluded the day caroling through the halls. The harmony and joy of the holiday season was also expressed by the exchange of gifts. 77 Patricia Hamilton takes advantage of the new, short line in the lunchroom. Joel Bozarth shows us his good side. This year the lunchroom has been more than a place to eat. It has served as the voting booth for elections and has given many organizations a place to sell everything ranging from pickles and suckers to carnations and plants. Lunch at Woodrow is a very relaxed time. It gives students an opportunity to converse with their friends, go shopping at the school store, or even study for tests. 79 2 bits, 4 bits ... all for the Wildcats, stand up and holler! Mike Becerra and Yolanda Green show us that Wildcats not only have spirit, but soul as well. David Jakaboski provides the music. After much heated discussion by Student Council representatives and faculty on the subject of having more assemblies, it was decided by Mr. Pierce that if more than three hundred students attended the basketball game against Skyline, an assembly would be held each week. A big pep-rally was held on January 7, which was highlighted by Coach Scott’s introduction of the players and a speech by the team captain. That night students suffered a double loss. Not only did the Woodrow team lose, but less than three hundred people showed up to support them. 81 K : MacBeth Will Ellen Quillian gel an academy award? Prior to the Christmas vacation, Mrs. Martha Timm's English IV classes were busy studying William Shakespeare's drama entitled MacBETH. Besides reading and analyzing the structure of the drama, the students went one step further, by acting out the most important scenes. Props and costumes were used in the big production, and in some parts the actors and actresses added lines of their own. This assignment proved that learning can be fun and humorous. Lady MacBeth is portrayed 1 Donna Walton. Robert Wilcox, Sandy Hargrove and Heidi Cochrane seem to ha something brewing. This must be true love. Will good looks get her the part? Maria Dominguez helps the Student Council by typing telegrams. Betsy Allen delivers a telegram to Mrs. Strubble. SOMEONE SPECIAL Let’s get into the Valentine spirit. Dancing in the dark. I was so nervous on our first date, but you were so kind and open, and you make me feel like someone special. When it came to our second date, it was as though I had known you forever. I could tell you everything, and you made me feel like someone special. When you would touch me I would tingle with security. I knew you would always be there, and you made me feel like someone special. As time grew on I depended on you more and more which I knew would make it harder to break up at the end, but I couldn’t help it because you made me feel like someone special. Now that you've told me that we won’t work out, after all that I've felt for you, am I supposed to feel like someone special? Hell, I love you, and I should have known that love can't last forever with someone that makes you feel so special. But I guess that it's all for the best because I wouldn't want you to be unhappy with me and feel that you were tied down with someone whom you made feel special. You know she has waited for this time when I would be hurt like hell by your saying Goodbye.” Please don't make her feel like someone special. Goodbye to you; and you asked if I was mad? How can I be mad at someone whom I will always love and who will always make me feel like someone special. - anonymous sophomore 89 BLACK STUDENTS SHO W PRIDE IN THEIR HERITAGE Robert Newhouse of the Dallas Cowboys Mike Taylor talks to fellow students about the Black-History Assembly during his lunch period. The week of February 13-20 was declared National Black-History Week. Students at Woodrow began their celebration one week early due to the tight schedule of their guests. A tremendous assembly was held with senior Michael McQuinney serving as Master of Ceremonies. Featured first was the Bishop College choir singing black folk music, as well as many contemporary pieces. Then, with much excitement in the air, Woodrow Wilson football star, Mike Taylor, introduced Robert Newhouse of the Dallas Cowboys. He delivered a very friendly speech to the student body, assuring them that even though one's goals in life might be high, if one strives hard enough, he can achieve them. Robert Newhouse poses with his cousin, Coacl Lucious Newhouse. 90 This dedicated group of students worked hard after school to prepare for their show. Gloria Sabedra is in charge of the music. MEXICAN-AMERICANS CELEBRATE CINCO DE MA YO” Rosey Fraga waits for her turn to rehearse her dance number. Cinco de Mayo celebrated by Mexican Americans in the United States as well as in Mexico; means simply The Fifth of May. It was on this day that the final battle was fought against the French Domination by the people of Mexico who had freedom in their blood. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated like a Mexican Fourth of July. This year the Mexican Americans at Woodrow Wilson, being proud of their heritage, put together a program with the help of Miss B. Parrett. The show consisted of a variety of Spanish dances and music to try to explain to the rest of the Student Body the meaning of the holiday. 91 hi DESTINY” Woodrow Wilson boys showed much interest. rf— -j — 1 — r ri. DESTINY’’ A special program called Destiny was presented February 14th by a group of college students who travel from state to state. Among these was a former student and cheerleader of Wood-row. These people had a message to get across to the students and used a variety of songs to do so. Their program, which explored the world of drugs and alcohol, held the interest of all the students. The presentation was enjoyed by one and all and many of the people that left the auditorium that day left with a different outlook on life. These people carried their messages in songs. 92 When you’re up, you’re up. When you're up against the Wildcats . . . When you’re down, you're down. . . . These included 38 members of the class of '77 and 16 members of the class of '78. Kenny Huff, the President presided. Speeches during the ceremony were given by Teresa Musgrove, Janet Thomas, Greg Turner, and Robert Wilcox. These eight enthusiastic people have filled our hearts with spirit, by leading us in cheers at assemblies as well as on the field. It’s no wonder we have had so many victories this year. 103 Drill Team Tradition Changes This year brought about a change in tradition. The old tradition of shoulder length hair was eliminated, giving more girls a chance to tryout. The 76-77 Sweethearts, sponsored by Miss Gay Addington and led by three captains developed a precision drill team. Every morning between 7:30 and 8:00 the Sweethearts worked hard perfecting the routines for the coming game. Whether it was the hottest or the chilliest of nights, there was a sweetheart smile of enthusiasm. December 12 was the banquet in which the Sweetheart of the Year and the four new captains were announced. Although there were many differences, problems, and hard work involved, there were also good times and everlasting memories. In fact, the last time Woodrow had such a large band was in 1969. If one had gone to any of our football games, one would have counted exactly ninety heads, not including substitutes. Performing at the games and playing little tunes at the pep assemblies was not the only schedule the hardworking band members had to fulfill. It takes more than Mr. Garmon can handle by himself to put together a reliable, organized Band. This year, Band officers were elected by others and appointed by Mr. Garmon to be leaders. This way the band members can have a part in the decisions of the Band, and can be better and more prosperous as a result. ’76-77 Band Sweetheart title belongs to Miss Julie Cruz. Marching on the field is not an easy task, but the Wildcat Band seems to be handling it. Other activities included: a day at Six Flags Arlington, and another day performing for the Regional Concert Band Competition. 109 76-77 MAJORETTES We are very proud to have such talented majorettes at Woodrow. President David Yates stated, This is one of the most hard working and dedicated clubs that I have ever been associated with. Other officers included Robert Wilcox, Vice-President; Jimmy Echols, Secretary; and Kevin Gallager, Treasurer. Yates cited Echols and Gallager as outstanding juniors and officers and plans on them to make an invaluable contribution to the 77-78 club. The club's first money making event was the State Fair of Texas Goat Race. Woodrow defeated the Plano Key Club and claimed the $100 first prize. The club also took advantage of the Christmas season and sold Poinsettia plants for $5.00 each and raised over $400 in profits. The next major project was a fund raising Valentine Dance open to the student body. With these and other events the Key Club accounted for a budget near the $1000 mark. Funds were appropriated for a $250 scholarship for a deserving senior, another $200 for the East Dallas kids and a substantial emergency fund was included. Coach Gordon Porter took on the club for his first year and did a fine job of keeping the club together. Coach Michael Kerby also assisted and took time out from his busy schedule to work with the club. Membership is open to any male student, and all prospects are admitted by application only. Dues are approximately $4.50 per year. KEY CLUB: FRONT ROW: Bobby Hartman, Clark Hood, Alan Luecke, UFO (Unidentified Female Object), Jack No Face” Hood, Martin Lopez. The year started off with an annual Initiation Dinner at Kathy Shoemaker’s house with hamburgers for supper and hot i .dge sundaes for dessert. Through the year, the Christmas period was the busiest for the club members. Besides going to the City Meetings, they were busy doing good deeds for underprivileged children. They sponsored a Christmas party with a nice pinata which they stuffed themselves. The Spanish Club is planning a trip to San Antonio and it supports itself by having bake sales, paper drives, and taking inventory at local dept, stores. The coaches said they were really impressed with the team’s progress over the summer. The Grey team was coached by Lucious Newhouse and Gary Collett, which was too much for Alton Hill and Rodger Zachary of the Red team. The Grey team took command with Bruce Wheeless carrying the ball 18 times for 163 yards and all four touchdowns. The Red team was led by Ken Davis’ 99-yard interception return, and Ken Huff’s two touchdown runs. Eddie Garcia kicked the extra points for both teams, and they ended up with 850 total yards rushing for the night. Holley Cole gets instructions from Coach Gary Collett in hitting his receivers. In the fourth quarter, Wilson’s Kenny Huff found Kevin Gallagher open in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown pass. Once again, Huff hit Ken Davis on a pass for the two point conversion to win the game 8-7 in the final seconds. Wilson rallied again to pull off the victory over the South Garland Colonels 20-17. This was the final pre-season game, as Woodrow showed a strong display of offense and defense strength. South Garland jumped off to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter, but David Allen returned the pursuing kick off back 95 yards for the touchdown to make it 10-7. In the fourth quarter Huff found Gallagher in the end zone on a one-yard touchdown pass to pull the Wildcats to a 20-17 victory. 151 k? 152 THE WOODROW WILSON VARSITY TEAM: FRONT ROW: R. Test Prayer Now I lay me down to study, I pray the Lord I won't go nutty, and if I fail to learn this junk I pray the Lord that I won't flunk. But if I don’t pity me at all, Just lay my bones in studyhall. Tell my teacher I've done my best. Then pile my books upon my chest.
