SCHOOL STARTS EARLY Skit-skat, well, how 'bout that! was one of the new yells being practiced by cheerleaders Barry Brooks, Shirley Clark, Melvin Van-cil, Barbara Rushing, Peter Shincda, Patty Kadane, and alternates Buddy Egan and Danys London. The first school bell rang at 8:35 on September 4 for most Woodrowites. But for some, the bustle of school activity started on August 19. On that day, the band, drill team, majorettes, and cheerleaders reported bright and early, eager for action. The football team followed soon on the first of September. Work was accompanied by vivid tales of a fun-filled summer. The pause that refreshes! The water fountain at Randall Park was a rare treat for the team. Looking very happy about the situation are (right to left) Spike Harlan, Mike Maddox, Emmett Moore, Bobby Gray, Bill Harris, Butch Gurley, and Glen Lindsey, while Gaylon Wood fakes his turn. Hot September sun doesn't halt the hard work during pre-school practice. Here Odis Nolle for the Blue team gets going off left tackle. 18

Not me? But it's true as Pete Shinoda, We Ivin Vancil, Barbara Rushing, and Terry Wallace show their approval of new cheerleader, Shirley Clark. THE HOME STRETCH Remember the spring '57 Senior Assembly? In this scene from the Old West, Kay Webb tries her wiles on a cowboy customer. The best ever seems to be the opinion of Dale Ewing, Martha Weed, Sandra White, Azalea Beene, and Pat Hill as they inspect the 1957 CRUSADER on the day of issue. 17

...FOR SOME Eight pretty majorettes pose for the photographer during a deserved timeout from pre-season practice. Yvonne Gerst, Sandra Gage, Scherric Hunt, Patsy Grant, Scherrie Watson, Martha Hedge-cock, Arlene Perdue, and Jean Ruyle give a promising picture for oncoming half-time attractions. The new cheerleaders were full of pep, and the football team was raring to go. The majorettes limbered up for twirling and prancing. The drill team got in shape, in more ways than one, while the band played on. Dig these crazy hats! was the general comment of the Drill Team members as they left the gym for a practice under the August sun. Drum Major, Brooks Bradley, comfortable, if in rather unorthodox costume, endeavors to get the band ready for football season. The black-top behind the gym was the scene of these summer practice sessions. 19
