We parents and teachers have the privilege and respon- sibility to see that freedom of speech, freedom of religion, free- dom from want, and freedom from fear Will be the heritage of our children. We must also remember that to maintain these freedoms we must cherish and defend them. They were not given to our an- cestors: they Were bought by a price of human hardships and it seems that they will be kept only by a never ending struggle. Sincerely, Mrs. Harrell Budd. ASHBUHN OUR PRINCIPAL I have realized all my life as a man connected with the tasks of education that the chief use of education is to open the understanding to compre- hend as many things as possible.-Woodrow Wilson. We, the SeniorClasses, Wish to express our gratitude to our Principal, Mr. G. I... Ashburn, for his great under- standing and sympathy shown to us. His realization of our problems and his ability to make decisions fairly have Won him a never-to-be-forgotten place in our hearts. A democratic person, he believes in doing things in a democratic Way. His ideals of democracy are two- fold: equal opportunity for all students and equal interest in the various activities of Woodrow Wilson High School.lHis interest in the individual student as Well as in that of the entire school instills a high spirit of endeavor in all the students. In every Way possible he has laid the foundation for us to have a broader knowledge- to comprehend as many things as possible, so that we may become leaders of this democratic country-America. For his intelligent, sympathetic, human, unselfish, and democratic leadership, We are grateful. F r r J I' me rf' W Aww f fl , .wwfgggg Miss Buth Abernathy Miss Virginia Adams Mr. E. M. MWMWMM, aww. 2 is Enlnnel H. lVI. Nuher The current school year marked a peak in the history of the Wloodrow Wilson High School Cadet Corps. Colonel R. M. Neher, commandant, made the R. O. Tl. C. unit conform to the regular Army in every Way possible. Colonel Neher's major change was that of appointing privates first-class as is done in the Army. He set up for the first time the system of having sergeants as squad leaders and corporals as assist- ant squad leaders. This change gave the unit more non-comms to lead the cadets. . Colonel Neher instituted the teach- ing of the standard Red Cross First Aid to all cadets. On successful completion of this course, the cadet was given a Red Cross certificate. By his progressiveness and alertness, Colonel Neher has made himself and his corps invaluable to the school and has made also a distinct contribution to his country. The band under his leadership has participated in school pep rallies, football games, and assembly programs. ln addition it has taken part in the Dallas Music Festival, and the State Music Clinicg the gray and crimson musicians have also appeared in local theaters and played on radio programs. Q Under his guidance, the second band has become not only larger, but also a better marching and playing unit, which will till the places made vacant by members of the first band. This year the Red Cross course was given to every member and more attention was given to the military aspects of the band. Sergeant William Forster First Sergeant Forster is a retired army man, who served in the Philippines and in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and who was also active in the World War. He retired as a top sergeant twenty-one years ago. Many years later he received the order ot the Purple Heart by congressional action for distinguished service in Cuba, where he was wounded. Sergeant Forster is Colonel Neher's aid and has charge ot the care ot all rifles in the Dallas high schools. The sergeant has served in nearly every country in the Far East, where war is now raging. His knowledge and experience make him invaluable to the cadets and the school. lVIrs.
