Pile, Mathematics Instructor and Former Business Manager of The Crumder. He has instilled in the minds of his students those high ideals of honorable integrity which he has always personally maintained, he has unselfishly devoted his time and patience to the problems of youthg he has always quickly re- sponded to any call for help, at all times, both by example and precept, he has kept before us an illustration of courtesy, honor, and dependa- bility. With admiring respect and deep appre- ciation, we acknowledge our indebtedness to him for all that he has done for us and for all those fine qualities of a gentleman and a scholar which he is illustrating in his life. drocu wilson tb-5-A f High Sctwoolfv named for a reat man and degicatecl to P115 ideals fsfvsfwa presents this tenth volume of its year- boolc f-1Gl1e CTU5GdQFh Ma record in word and picture of the personalities clndfwf-1 events which have comgarised thisfmbfafa sc ool year of 1957531955 il pi W . XWith this quotation in mind the Seniors of Wfoodrow Wfilson have for the past four years run well. A great deal of the joy of life consists in doing perfectly, or at least to the best of one's ability, everything which he attempts to dof' -Willirzllz Mzzffaews. The Woodrow Wilson Students and Principal, with the Dallas High School Athletic Director, look with pride on the material symbols of deeds perfectly done. He who loveth a book will never want 21 faithful friend, a wholesome counseller, a cheerful companion, or an effectual comforter. -Isaac Barrow. Woodrow Wilson students apparently realize that the library is an excellent place to make friends, both in books and otherwise. ASI-IBURN When graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, we, the June, 1938 and January, 1939 classes, wish to express, collectively and in- dividually, our gratitude to our Principal, G. L. Ashburn, who has been our friendly leader dur- ing our high school course. Those of us who have spent four years here remember gratefully how Mr. Ashburn helped us when we were bewildered freshmen, those of us who have been at Woodrow for a shorter time recall with equal thankfulness how welcome our principal made us feel and how rapidly he enabled us to realize that we were an integral part of a great school, all remember how, in our under class days, we swelled with pride when Mr. Ashburn spoke to us in the halls. In future days we shall always recall his genial personality, his wise direction, his kindly interest, and his genuinely democratic spirit, and we hope that June '38 will not mark the end of our friendship but may be merely a mile post along its road. Pop Ashburn, we have had a memorable time here and to you, our friend and adviser, we express our sincerest thanks. As a hobby, fencing is superior in many ways to stamp collecting or knitting-at least, from the point of view of the student who craves action. It has a romantic appeal because of its historic background, and it is a vivid sport, exciting to the imagination. Unlike many sports, it has no definite season. Two persons, only, are necessary for participationg and it is a most invigorating exercise, conducive to good posture and bodily co-ordina- tion. However intricate the sport may be, the practice is fun-even for the novice, after all, d'Artagnan was once a beginner. Hi-Y MR. W. BAILEY HAIKGRAVIAQ .... . . . Thompson has coached the Wildcats in the exciting game of football for the past three years, and has done such a swell job of it that the Triple W this year wears the city championship crown. The rigid ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship, and courtesy to which Mr. Thompson has held his squad, have won the admiration of the faculty and student body to the extent that we take sincere pleasure in saluting the coach and saying to him, Well done! We'll be backing you for state champs next year in the good old Wildcat way. Doyle Smith, assistant football coach, is a person well-liked by the boys he has control over, for his friendly and helpful attitude toward them in time of stress. Mr. Smith, who is responsible for the training of the backheld is well qualified for his position, in that he has a considerable reputation along that line. He is, therefore, able to set a good example for his understudies to follow. Bailey Hargrave is the driving taskmaster of the freshie football recruits and the guiding light to the future tennis stars. Mr. Hargrave could easily be termed the power behind the throne, for it is he who uncovers talent that is to be developed later. Neither team scored in the first half. With magnificent plunges and runs, Sharp drove over the goal in the middle of the third quarter. A pass from Davis to Bowman was good for the extra point. Brackenridge received the kick-off but the Wildcats scored on a 50-yard pass from Cooke to Melton. Melton converted. A Brackenridge center sent the ball high over the quarterback's head, and it landed behind the goal line with Brackenridge recovering, giving the Wildcats two more points. WOODROW, Og HIGHLAND PARK, 7 Highland Park started things off with a bang. Dfivelle received a pass from Munnell just eight minutes after the game began. The Scots played almost continually with aerial attacks, completing five out of twenty-two. Woodrow Wilson missed excellent oppor- tunities to score because of the slippery fingered backfield. Kutner, Melton, and Williams starred for Wilson, while Munnell, Gay, and Divelle stood out for the Highlanders. WOODROW, 20g GAINESVILLE, 6 The Triple W eleven gained an easy victory over the Gainesville Leopards through the outstanding playing of Williams, Cooke, Simpson, and Moncrief. Williams tore through the Leopard line early in the game for 40 yards and soon crossed the goal line for the first tally. The Wildcats were held down until the last quarter when Cooke passed the skin to Simpson with Melton converting. Later, another aerial from Williams to Moncrief added more points to the Triple W's growing score. The Leopards sole tally was a result of a pass from Burcell to McCallom. The conversion failed. WOODROW, 15 g FOREST, 0 Opening their bid for the District 8 championship, the Wildcats clawed a hard vic- tory from the Forest Lions. The first half was played on even terms until Williams of Woodrow galloped 67 yards for a touchdown. The conversion failed. During the fourth period Simpson intercepted a pass in the flat zone and raced to the Lions 28-yard line. Sharp drove to the 2-yard stripe and the squad was penalized 5 yards. On the second try he crossed the double stripe. Cooke's conversion failed. Near the end of the tussle, Woodrow's Kaiser booted a perfect field- goal. WOODROW, 19, TECHNICAL, 0 The first half was played from one end of the field to the other with neither team scoring. Early in the third quarter, Sharp opened the way with a 17-yard dash for Davis to cross for a touchdown. Melton's conversion failed. A few minutes later, Sharp again opened up with a drive through left tackle and then a lateral to Kutner, who was untouched for another goal. Sharp converted. Then late in the third quarter, Cooke passed to Simpson who crossed the goal line and then fumbled. The pass was ruled complete, however. Tech was outplayed in every way. WOODROW, 7 5 ADAMSON, 7 After receiving a long punt on Adamson's 46-yard line, the Wildcats began attacking. Melton nabbed Williams' pass on the 3-yard line after several spectacular gains by 'Wil- liams. Williams crossed the goal line and kicked the extra point. Williams, pass in the third period boomeranged when Niblo intercepted it and raced to the 5-yard stripe. Chandler crossed the goal through left tackle and Oakes converted. The remainder of the third and all the fourth period saw the ball going from one end of the fiCld to the other. BEEF--N - in WOODROW, 20, GLADEWATER, 13 The Wildcats outscrapped the Gladewater Bears through brilliant runs by Rex Sharp. The Triple W team took the offensive almost entirely. The East Texans' brightest star was Sloan, whose marksmanship was incredible. His extremely long heaves netted the B-ears two touchdowns. Doubtless the Wildcats could have kept the Bears from scoring so much, had they been prepared for as much aerial playing as was seen in this tussle. WOODROW, 13, SUNSET, 0 Taking advantage of Orenbaum's wild kick on his own 32-yard line, the Wildcats began bearing down. With a pass from Cooke to Bowman and two line plunges the Cats made a first down to the 25-yard line. Cooke passed to Melton on the two-yard line, and then cracked right guard for the initial score. Sharp failed to convert. Late in the first period Cooke, with superb blocking, tore around right end and crossed the double stripe standing up. A pass, Cooke to Melton, made the extra point. The Bisons threatened twice with penetrations to the Crimson and Gray 20-yard line. WOODROW, 13, NORTH DALLAS, 0 The Wildcats began playing in earnest immediately after the first period. Receiving a punt from Austin, Bulldog left halfback, Cooke was run out of bounds after a 3-yard return and the ,Cats were penalized 15 yards for clipping. Unperturbed by this Cooke cracked left tackle, cut back, and with the aid of excellent blocking crossed the stripes for the primary score. Bowman converted. The Bulldogs were completely outplayed. In the middle of the last half, Williams, substitute back, took the Bulldogs un- awares and galloped 34 yards for a touchdown. Bowman's attempt for conversion was wide. WOODROW, 0, NORTH SIDE, 0 Entering the game over-confident, Woofdrow was beaten by penetrations. The Wild- cats soon saw that they could only win by speedy attacks and proceeded to bring many beauties into play. Kutner, intercepting a pass on the North Side 20, opened the way for Woodrow to score. Two running plays coupled with a pass from Cooke to Simpson, gained six yards, but Wallace was stopped on the line of scrimmage and the ball changed hands. Reese, Blackman, and Mayfield played a stellar game for North Side, while Bow- man, Cooke, and Melton stood out for the Wildcats. BASKETBALL COACH HOWARD KITCHEN The ideal coach, firm but not overbearing. Mute evidence of his splendid handling may be seen in the trophy case. Under his watchful eye the Wildcats scratched themselves a path to the State Basketball Championship. Ralph Geb, Student Manager. Dick Kincheloe, Student Manager.
