ASI-IBURN Pljfltjfltll of WIIJIQKIIAKIIC' Wfifxou High Srlwool A scholarly gentleman, friendly, helpful- that is our beloved principal, G. L. Ashburn. Throughout our stay here at Woodrow Wilson, he has done his best to see us through , and to give us timely bits of needful counsel, or to assist us in any matter, whether great or small. His frank, open manner has always led both fresh- man and senior to feel free to discuss innumerable problems with him, not so much as a principal, but as a father, or a close friend. Such an edu- cator as this is one to be saluted as a benefactor to civilization and to his fellow man. We of the class of 1937 take this opportunity to say uthanksv and farewell to one who has been so close to our hearts for the past four years. f. sf www, W' If ,Sic- HQ- www... is nr-5 175 ,Fx-GS It --A, is 4, Dx arm Qv! This list is divided into two groups-the first, which is called Magna Cum Laurie, is composed of those students who have made an average of 90 to 100 in all their workg the second, which is called Cum Lalmle, is composed of those who have made an average of 80 to 90 in all studies. No student may be included in either group who has made a grade below 80 in any subject. This year we have added a third group, which is called Szznznza Cum Lazule. It is composed of those junior and senior students who have maintained an average of 95 to 100 in all subjects Qincluding examinationsj studied in Woodrow' Wilson High School. The picture of this group and the names of its members appear at the head of this page, and the entire school salutes its top', scholars. On the following pages are the names of those students who met these requirements for the Hrst term this year. Due to the irregularity of attendance some names may have been omitted and the annual staff wishes this to' be their apology and excuse if such omissions have occurred. As a hobby, fencing is superior in many ways to stamp collecting or knitting-at least, from the point of view of the student who craves action. It has a romantic appeal because of its historic background, and it is a vivid sport, exciting to the imagination. Unlike many sports, it has no definite season. Two persons, only, are necessary for participation, and it is a most invigorating exercise, conducive to good posture and bodily eo-ordination. However intricate the sport may be, the practice is fun-even for the noviceg after all, d'Artagnan was once a beginner. af ax., f Awmvxi. ,lan A. 5 Crusaders cmd Bond Two colorful groups that have added brilliance to most of Woodrow Wilson High School's public appearances this year are the Band and Crusaders. The Crusaders are a drum, bugle, and life corps composed of 112 girls dressed in scarlet and gray uniforms. DOYLE SMITH . Wfade W. Thompson has ably coached the football teams of Woodrow Wilson Wildcats for the past two years and has been in charge of the victorious track team for a longer period of time. He is a man greatly admired by the entire student body for his friendly manners as well as his high standards of sportsmanship. Assistant Coach Bailey W. Har- grave not only helps with the freshman football team but also trains the triple W tennis players. He is interested in both lines of sport, and at the time the CRU- SADER goes to press has every indication of having once again trained the tennis teams and stars who will gain the 1937 victory on . Houchin assures Woodrow Wilson High of future gridiron victories by train- ing the freshman football boys. An industrious and conscientious worker, he took charge of the un- derclassmen and while nominally he is a member of the faculty of J. L. Long Junior High the Wild- cats claim him as one of their own. Assistant Coach Doyle Smith proved his worth in coaching a strong line as assistant to Coach Thompson. He has shown a splen- did spirit of cooperation and has done much toward the betterment of athletics at Woodrow Wilson. Foolborll Squad MR. VVADE THOMPSON . . The Season WOODROW 205 SHERMAN 7 Releasing a deceptive aerial attack in their first game of the season, the Wildcats downed the Sherman Bearcats 20 to 7. Good punting in the first period enabled the Gray and Crimson eleven to make their first teedee at the start of the second quarter as a result of a pass, West to Kirby, which placed the ball on the 8-yard stripe from where West carried Over. Webb's pass to Smith accounted for the second score late in the quarter. Bertucci plunged over the goal for the third marker in the second half. Heads-up football aided in holding the Bearcats to one touchdown. WOODROW 0, HILLSBORO 13 Playing on a field completely covered with water and looking more a swimming meet than a football game, the Wildcats were defeated by the strong Hillsboro eleven 13 to 0. The Eagles' first six-pointer came as a result of a blocked kick. In the second quarter Bertucci fumbled behind the goal and the Hillsboro eleven recovered for their second score. From then to the end of the game the Gray and Crimson held the Eagles on par, neither pushing across a tally. In the fourth quarter, however, the Wildcats began their attack and made their only first downs of the game. WOODROW 0g WACO 6 Displaying a fine defense which held the favored Waco Tigers to a single touchdown, the Triple W went down to defeat, but not disgrace, before the invading Tigers 6 to 0. The fast Waco eleven took the pigskin in the Hrst few minutes of play and with a strong running and aerial attack climaxed by a perfectly executed lateral made the only score of the game. The Wildcats came to life at the end of the first quarter and nearly scored when Shively blocked one of the Bengals' punts, but a fumble ended the threat on the Waco 27-yard line. Both elevens had several chances to push across a tally, but were unable to click. The play of both forward lines provided the feature of the game. WOODROW 65 ADAMSON 2 The Woodrow Wilson Wildcats jumped the gun and won their opening city series game with the Adamson Leopards in the Cotton Bowl by a score of 6 to 2. Adamson drew first blood when Bertucci missed a bad pass from center and was downed behind the goal for a two-pointer for the Leopards. It was in the third quarter that Woodrowis winning counter was made. A series of runs and passes aided by a 25-yard penalty placed the ball on the Leopards' 4-yard line from where Webb took the ball over. The try for extra point was blocked, and the game ended without further scoring. WOODROW 20, DENISON 6 The Gray and Crimson footballers conquered the Yellow Jackets of Denison Hi, previously undefeated, in a day game at the Cotton Bowl by a score of 20 to 6. The Wildcats flashed a greatly improved offense, scoring their first marker after a few minutes of the first quarter. West, Wildcat quarter, took the ball over from the 1-yard line. The Triple W scored twice in the third quarter. Once Webb carried over from the 4-yard line after Shively recovered a blocked kick, and Bertucci threw Smith a pass, good for 30 yards and the Wildcats' final score. The fourth quarter was played by the second team who held the Yellow Jackets to one teedee. The Season WOODROW 7, SUNSET 30 Showing a surprising reversal of form in their second district game, the Silver and Flame of Woodrow was trampled before the onrushing Sunset Bisons, 30 to 7. Even with C. Wilson, star back, recently declared eligible, in the line-up, the Wildcats were no match for the Bisons, who scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Lonnie Hill, Wilson cinder star, took the ball on the kick-off after the Bisons' first score and returned it 79 yards to the 10-yard line, where Wilson carried over for the Wildcats' only threat. WOODROW 19g FOREST 7 Outscoring the Green Wave of Forest 19 to 7, the Wildcats won their second city series game. In the second quarter a 33-yard run by Hill produced the Wildcats' first score. In the second half after a series of passes had been thwarted by the Lions, secondary, the Wildcats got inside the Greenies 40-yard stripe and scored on a pass, Bertucci to Fowler. A Lion fumble proved costly and resulted in the Gray and Crimson's third tally. The Lions' score came in the fourth quarter on a run by Denny. The Wildcats' victory, however, was marred by the loss of Ray West, star quarterback, who received a broken leg and was lost to the team for the remainder of the season. WOODROW 6, TECH 32 Bravely putting up with a defense and offense which they could not match, the Wildcats lost to the Tech Wolves, 32 to 6. The Wolves scored four touchdowns in the first half while holding the Wildcat backs to no gain. In the last quarter the Grey and Crimson came to life, and a series of passes worked to complete a score. With Wilson slinging them, and Kirby and Smith, ends, catching them in turn, the Wildcats marched down the field to the 5-yard line from where Wilson crashed over tackle for the count. Wilson stood out for the triple W eleven in the backfield, while Kirby and James, who continued his way to all-city-honors, starred defensively. WOODROW Og NORTH DALLAS 13 The Wildcats were knocked into fourth place in the final city series game by virtue of their defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs, 13 to 0. Ivey of North Dallas scored the first goal before five minutes of the first quarter had passed. The Woodrow line held until the fourth quarter, but their offensive attack could not get started. Cooke and Wilson gained against the Bulldog line but to no advantage. Hart, Kutner, Shively and James stood out on the defense for the Grey and Crimson eleven. WOODROW 65 BEAUMONT 0 Emerging the victors in a story book last minute finish, the Wildcats closed their season with a close win over the Royal Purple eleven of Beaumont, 6 to 0, on Turkey Day. In the closing seconds of the last quarter, Smith caught a forward pass thrown by Wilson and was downed on the 3 yard line. With 5 seconds left to play, Webb went through a hole at center large enough for a truck, for the winning score. l MR.
