Collins. FOREWORD This volume is a record, in Word and picture, of the events of the year 1935-1936 in Woodrow Wilson High School. Since this year celebrates the hundredth anniversary of Texas Inde- pendence, the art motif has been drawn from those cities which have played such notable parts in the development of our state. The division pages are not intended to be pictorially correct, but are artist's conception of the sky- lines and views, characteristic of some of the outstanding cities of Texas. ORDER OF BOOKS ADMINISTRATTON CLASSES DEPARTMENTS ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS FEATURES AUSTIN Austin, a hilly city on the Colo- rado River, is the capital of Texas. In this town, named for Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas, the rose-colored capitol rises near the beautiful campus of the University of Texas. The governor's mansion, of course is here, and hospitable residents of Austin are happy to point out to visitors O'Henry's home, Elizabeth Ney's studio, and the old French legation. Because of its position amid the Wooded foot- hills, Austin has been called the City of the Violet Crown. 35, X4 j ig X Q , A ,qi kj',j ill, J 1 X 1 1 ' , , -+ 3. M. ASI-IBURN Woodrow Wilson High School has had a splendid year-many kind things have been said about the Triple W spirit and many victories attributed to it. To out- siders this spirit may be merely an intangible phrase but to us land, by us, we mean every student-both past and presenthof Woodrow Wilson High Schoolj it is embodied in the real and definite personality of our principal, G. L. Ashburn. We admire him for his work as an educator, as well as for his good sportsmanship. By example and precept Mr. Ashburn stands for the three aims of education: the formation of character, the inculcation of ideals, and the creation of real citizenship. A certain great writer once said that the Hrst requisite of a gentleman was consideration for others , and in this quality our principal is supreme. His sympathy, unfail- ing kindness, and generous understanding have compelled the admiration and respect of his student body. To each member of the class of 1936 he stands as a high example of sportsman, educator, gentleman, and friend. Miss Erma A. Griffin Mr. A. Paul Papin Miss Carrie Deen Mr. R. Happily, and to the everlasting credit of its past leaders, the Woodrow Wilson P. T. A. has continuously pushed on to greater heights of usefulness. XVhile We have every reason to be proud of the record of our past leaders, our progress is and always has been predicated on the co-operation of all the members laboring unselfishly to make our organization of real service to the school and community. All values today are being tested in the crucible of an enlightened public opinion. Earnest boys and girls are in Search of the dependable and the true things. Experience shows that enduring values are human values. To make a better world, we must create better and more intelligent men and women. Economic depressions never touch invest- ments made in the business of building human character and illuminating human intelligence. Our organization in fostering and helping to promote education is lI0t only ex- tremely worth While, but is the highest service'to which We could direct our attention. Let us then rededicate ourselves, and with divine guidance, we together will endeavor to inspire the youth of today to greater heights of achievement. MRS. Hays BASSILTT. W SAN ANTONIO San Antonio had settlements as far back as 1692. The Shrine of Texas Liberty, the Alamo, explains why this city is often called the Alamo Cityn. This old building in the heart of the city marks the place where Travis, Bowie, Crockett, and their gallant little band met their death. San Antonio is the Nation's greatest military post. Randolph Field, largest air-training center in the World, and Kelly Field, largest aviation field in America, are also located here. + - 8 4 'Z K -s my r-.1 ., Nagy, f Y' Y-'Lima w , - J I v t, MSW Qifiaif M, 'v .-nf' yur. Nearby is Ysleta, the oldest White settlement in Texas, where several historic Spanish missions are located. Across the Rio Grande is colorful Juarez, in Old Mexico. Through El Paso, trafhc passes from Texas and the South to the West Coast. El Paso is the center of a prosperous mining district and the home of the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy. A landmark is Ft. Bliss, the United States largest calvary post. The lazy Rio Grande flows through this mod- ern city, an outpost of progress in the Old West',. However, this city, built on the site of an old Fort established in 1849, is a major petroleum center and has many re- fineries, as well as other factories of note. It has many amusement centers among the most popular being Arlington Downs and Lake Wforth. Xyvx 2,5 fan- Q, , jg., x. M . A Organizations On the following pages we have pictures and names of those students who have attained distinction in helping with the management of our extra-curricular affairs. The two Student Council groups are composed of representatives elected by each room in our building. Their duties are many: they act as contact men between the principal and the various groups, carrying his message and directions in many important mattersg they attend to the sale and distribution of the school newspaperg they make the final selec- tion of our yell leaders, they help to conduct the subscription campaign for the Crusaderg and they assist in managing the nomination and elec- tion of our school favorites. The interscholastic group is composed of those students who have been selected to represent Woodrow Wilson High School in the fields of the written essay, spelling, debate, declamation and dramatic art. The direction of all these outside activities has given rise to a business department which is responsible for the management and financial conduct of matters pertaining to our school life. Each Tuesday the Thrift Department opens its banking room, at which time all students of Woodrow Wilson are urged to make deposits in their school bank accounts. That the students appreciate this op- portunity of saving money and learning the habit of thrifty and in- telligent conservation of their funds is shown by the fact that Woodrow Wilson High School has 479 active accounts, with deposits of S12,S00. The Woodrow Wilson News is published bi-weekly during the school term and furnishes a live record of the happenings of the school year. This paper is a pioneer in the class of school publications which are con- ducted without advertising. Its editors and managers make a very definite and lasting contribution to the life and history of our school. The Crusader is the annual publication of the school. It is edited by the senior class and in picture and word forms a record of the events and personalities of the school year. The Library Council is a group of upper-classmen who assist the librarian in many duties, connected with the issuing and receiving of numerous volumes required by the students in each day's work. A different group is on duty at each period of the day and the task they perform is one that aids greatly in the efficiency of our school. The different club groups offer an interesting social and intellectual background for the various fields they represent and offer the students an opportunity to pursue their hobbies with others interested in similar lines. Should I ever have to leave you, Turn my steps away, Should I ever have to leave you Turn my steps away, Texas, I shall not forget you, I shall return to you someday! I HOUSTON Houston, named in honor of the immortal General Sam Houston, was one of the early capitals of the Republic. It has great historic interest, because it is near San Jacinto Park, scene of the decisive battle by which Texas Won her in- dependence. The city is situated on Buffalo Bayou which has been transformed into a ship channel by the Federal Government and the County, thus giving Houston di- rect communication with the ocean. This first cotton port of America is also Texas' largest city. ww VV 1 1. K W Maw1.mwi3 ?.,LLqyuun, 7 M-.L , 1 - 1 W f A , 7.1. f 1 umygy Our Coaches WADE W. THOMPSON Hvafl Football Coacb Trark. Founded in 1846 by pioneers whose aggressive spirit has been indelibly stamped on her character, this cos- mopolitan city has become the em- bodiment of the Spirit of the New South. It is veritably the amuse- nlent center of Texas, and from Southern Methodist University,s well known campus to lovely resi- dential districts and the towering sky line, Dallas offers visitors proof of the correctness of its title The New York of the Southwest. , ,, , w,vM4m,3 tn f,,,.f?L3, M4 . This year, in its selection for these positions, the Crusader conducted its elec- tion on a purely democratic basis. Each student in the school was allowed to nominate one boy and one girl.
