G. L. ASHBURN STUDENT CREED We believe in honest work, in friendly comradeship and in the high courage that leads to right conduct. We believe that from contact ,with the truest and best in people, in books, and in life, will come our inspiration for success. We believe in loyalty to our Woodrow Wilson High School, which was named for a great man and is dedicated to his ideals, we believe in loyalty to our community, the City of Dallas, which has fostered our edu- cation and our pleasures, We believe in loy- alty to our country, the United States of America, which was founded by great men, has been protected by great men and will always be the producer of great men. We pledge our allegiance to these three agencies and hope, by our own lives, to make them all stronger and more potent factors in the advancement of humanity. We publish this, Our Creed, opposite the picture of our principal, G. L. Ashburn, be- cause, by his example and precept, he has helped us to formulate these beliefs. MISS MABETH C301-'If . . LT. WM. G. T. C COLORS CORPORAL LEMUEL CAMPBELL COLOR SERGEANT WILLIAM TLMMONS COLOR SERGEANT RALPH JORDAN CORPORAI. R. L. MARSHALL The R. O. T. C. We are very proud to say that our Woodrow Wilson military unit is the largest junior R. O. T. C. corps in the United States. Although it is only four years old, this striving regiment of growing boys is pushing forward for honors. In this important part of school training, every boy has a chance to learn requirements for success in later life that can not be learned from books. Courtesy and discipline are always stressed in mili- tary, and every boy who enters this department is ambitious for leadership. The spirit of this Military Department is that of working together, its aim is honor and glory among the other units, and its product is better young men who hope to work and live for their country. Lieutenant William Webb Browning Z William Webb Browning started to West Point in 1922, but he was sent home after a mastoid operation to rebuild his health and strength. Re-entering, he deferred his graduation another year and graduated in 1928. He made no small job of building strength and alertness into his body for he starred in soccer and hockey and Was captain of the Army's baseball team of 1928. This large military unit was taken in hand by Lieutenant Browning, who came to us as our commandant last September. By devoting his entire interest to the Work of the corps and applying the strict West Point rules, he has directed this unit very efficiently and has succeeded in building up an excellent morale among the six hundred students under his command. Sergeant William Forster Sergeant William Forster has done fine work as Lieutenant Browning's assistant. By his efficient direction and work, the rifles and supplies have been kept in perfect order. While he was serving in the Spanish-American War, he was wounded on San Juan Hill, and later he went to the Philippines during the insturrection there. For several years he was an instructor at Fort Sam Houston. The discipline and rules of the regular army are always right before us, for Sergeant Forster is forever among the cadets ready for any correction or instruction. PIANNAII GOLDSTEIN The enrollment in Wfoodrow Wilson High continues to increase-and so does the size of our gym classes, so that the classes are large in spite of the fact that we still take this exercise only two and three times a week. The advanced girls are allowed to choose between sports and dancing classes and seem to enjoy the work, unless they have conflicts that make them land in a dancing class after having been in a sports class one term and find that their feet just won't move to music. ln spite of the very warm winter the sports classes have had to remain inside a great deal because of the rain and mud, but did manage some soccer in the fall and winter and, in the spring, baseball, outdoor volley ball, and tenikoit on the new courts. We have all noticed that unless we are careful we begin to get round-shouldered from carrying so many books and leaning over desks, but some of us have been working to avoid this. The girls doing individual and corrective work were quite interested to note a great improvement and most of them worked hard to correct their posture, putting to shame a number of girls who continued to let their shoulders droop. We had a number of outside activities, such as tennis, skating, swimming, and horse- back riding, so that every girl could find something to her liking. The Riding Club was one of the most popular and the girls who rode regularly became quite expert. All in all, we found variety and fun in our work this year. , mgy. The selection of members is based not only upon scholarship but also upon leadership and competence. The Councills aim is to vuide and hel other students in the use of the library and to o P maintain order and efhciency. This group, supported by its able sponsor, Mrs. Helen C. Braack, is largely responsible for the highly modern and efhcient library. The Council was the first to introduce the student government idea at Wilson. The Council, however, is not entirely a business organization, for the year's program includes numerous pleasure jaunts and parties not pertaining to work at school. Loren Long Carl Hort . He is a man greatly admired by the entire student body, as well as the football squad, for his friendliness and his high standards of sportsmanship. Each team he has turned out has been victorious from a moral standpoint, since he always stressed the great value of clean living and right thinking. Assistant Coach Wade Thompson is the valuable trainer of the Wild- cat basketball squad and the victorious track team, always instilling in his men the realization of true sportsmanship. Assistant Coach Howard Kitchen, a most welcome newcomer, has taken into his capable hands the shaping of the baseball nine. Assistant Coach Bailey Hargraves not only backs the forceful tennis team, but also puts over the large ticket sales for all athletic events. With these four men, Woodrow Wilson High expects to make ath' letic history. Below is a picture of a part of our rooting section at one of our 1932 games. NVl1.nCA'1' Rooilins S l 5 nl , M f N X The Season WOODROW WILSON 13-MQKINNEY 0 Opening the '31 football season with a bitterly fought contest, the W'ildcats emerged victorious over the McKinney Lions with a score of 15 to 0. The game, played under a steaming sun, was slow but not entirely without thrills, as Pete Stanley, diminutive W'ildeat back, starred with a 60-yard run through the entire Lion team. Bob W'ebb, captain, had the honor of scoring Wilson's first touchdown of the season. WOODROW WILSON 0-LUBBOCK 25 The W'ildcats traveled about 400 miles to Lubbock, where they went down in defeat. LulJbock's triple spin play proved very successful against the Wfildcats. In this battle, Pete Stanldy and Orlando Bert received slight injuries. In the fourth quarter, the Wfildcats made their only threat to score, but were turned backg and returned home with the consolation that they had been in a will football battle anyway. WOODROW WILSON 6-W'ACO 34 In this nocturnal game between the Xvildeats and W'aco, the coaches found a new machine in Bob Webb. Bob was switched from his end position to the backfield, where he played stellar ball. He took the ball from the shadows of his own goal and put it across for the W'ildcats, only counter of the conflict. WOODROW WILSON 7-TECH 0 By downing the Tech Vfolves 7 to 0, the W'ildcats opened the City Series with a promising outlook for a successful season. The Triple W's, rated as underdogs in the current race. soundly outplayetl and out- fought the XVolves throughout the entire melee. Bob Webb, W'ilson's flame-headed captain, was the scintillating star of the contest, as he repeatedly crashed through the Tech line and finally scored the winning touchdown. Parry and Vfinters played Hue football for the W'ildcats. WOODROXV WILSON 13-SUNSET 6 The Xvildeats' second game in the District Six Contest was a glorious triumph over the liisons, the score being 13 to 6 in W'ilson's favor. The Triple-W' W'arriors had things pretty much their own way. XY'ebb. aided by his running mates, NX'inters, Collie, and Beal, made two touchdowns and kicked one goal. WOODROW WILSON 28-NORTH DALLAS 0 With a final score of 28 to 0, the powerful Woodrow Wilson W'ildcats soundly defeated the North Dallas Bulldogs. Wilson's fighting captain, Bob Webb, was taken out of the game early in the second period with an injured knee. Bert, Collie, Passmore, and Winters starred in the backfield. The spectators received a thrill When Fred Passmore intercepted a North Dallas pass on his own ten-yard line and ran 90 yards for a touchdown. WOODROW WILSON 6-HIGHLAND PARK 20 Led by Red Webb, the Wildcats flashed a brand of ball that could not be denied. On successive line plunges the Wilson team, with Webb carrying, plunged to the Highlander seven-yard line and from there scored the first marker of the game. The Highlanders, with Amis and Starzell carrying the ball, scored in the second, third and fourth quarters to hand Wilson team its hrst defeat in the district race. WOODROW WILSON 0-OAK CLIFF 7 The fighting Wildcats, minus thc services of Webb, held the Oak Cliff Leopards scoreless until the last quarter, when, aided by two seven-yard penalties, they pushed over the lone marker of the game. The Leopards again threatened the Wilson goal in the same period, but the drive ended when Pete Stanley intercepted ii pass on the two-yard line. The feature of the game was Collie's sensational punting. WOODROW WILSON 7--FOREST 19 In their last City Series game of the year, the Wildcats bowed down in defeat to the Forest Lions. The green-clad warriors scored in the hrst quarter after several line plunges. In the second quarter, the Lions scored two more touchdowns. During the third quarter, the teams played on even terms. Opening a passing attack in the last quarter, the Wildcats netted their only score of this game. WOODROW WILSON 0-LITTLE ROCK 31 Playing in a cold drenching rain and on a held of red mud, the Wildcats were handed a 51 to 0 defeat by Little Rock High team, State Champions of Arkansas, on Thanksgiving Day. Wearied by the long trip and hampered by the elements, the Wildcats did not show their real strength. McNatt and Launey starred in the backficld, while Parry and Cantrell stood out on the defense. This game marked the end of the most successful season enjoyed by Wilson in its four years of combat. S R ' . , liQ-11 f' . .134 1 Q I ee-5 -if 1-'K if . This year, in its selection for these positions, the CRUSADER conducted its election on a purely demo- cratic basis. Each student in the school was allowed to nominate three boys and three girls. The names of the six boys and girls receiving the largest number in this nomi- nating vote were listed on a popularity bal- lot. Again each student was allowed to indi- cate his choice, and the Annual takes great pride in showing the pictures of these boys and girls who were selected as school favor- ites by their classmates.
