Schrflizrshiv, Enthusiasm, Spirit Sparlsmizrzslziv . . . -these qualities are idealized by the traditions of Wood- row Wilson High School. In essence, these same qualities define the theme of the 1961 Campanile. Seniors are going out into a troubled world. With the chaos which threatens on all sides, it is possible that the seniors might see only the gloomy thunderclouds crowding the horizon. Yet Wilson seniors go forth inspired to build a good future based solidly upon the tried ideals of the past, which have been preserved and passed on to the seniors through the medium of education. This same spirit of Wilson High is no less typical of the leadership offered by the principal and his administrative staff. The pages of the book that follow present the spirit of the school as it is today: a confident tomorrow built on knowledge of yesterday. ln this sense the yearbook, as always, represents a secondary dedication: to the goals represented by the principal of the school. It is the hope of the editorial staff that the 1961 Campanile can truly and truthfully symbolize the spirit of the school and at the same time the goals of the school administration. , sHERRY Rosa , f JOHN Coma , fi yi, y yy, ffl' Co-editors f X' ,X W 1 if W ff X 5 .Q ff 7 f A ff . 7 . 1 f M M4 y IWW!! Ann Roberson, Anne Townsend, Joe Dennin. Dedication To Mrs. Anna Townsend T ' For more than thirty years a teacher at Wilson High School, Mrs. Townsend, presently department head for English, symbolizes the evolution of the school and the main- tenance of its high standards of excellence. These are the treasures which graduates of the past remember mostg these are the memories the present graduating class will take with us as we open the doors into tomorrow. Mrs. Townsend recalls her first years at Wilson, in the school year 1928-1929, she was asked to sponsor the senior class. '4During that year,'7 she remembers, we had several pay assemblies in order to provide funds for the purchase of our Class Gift, a fountain for our patio. Since then, I have had mixed feelings about the wisdom of our choice, although 1 still feel that 'La Fuente, became a real land for waterJ mark on our campus, besides supplying a name for our literary magazine Which, over a period of years, Won laurels for our school in nation-wide school magazine competi- tions. fFor several years I served as its sponsorj While Mrs. Townsend chose to pose by the site of the fountain purchased by the first class she sponsored, she recalls more satisfaction from the students who have been in her many classes. UI have seen them grow before my eyes, in their appreciation of great books and in their ability to write creativelyf, Mrs. Townsend also is delighted by the many alumni 'iwho have returned to express sincere though belated apprecia- tion to the teacher they thought made them work too hard when they were heref' Therefore to this symbol of high standards and hard Work, we proudly dedicate the 1961 Campanile, for we are a class which must look forward to hard work if we are to preserve tomorrow the things we value today. Mrs. Townsend, because of her work on the national level in the American Associa- tion of University Women, is listed in the very first edition of Whcfs Who of American Women, also, in the second edition soon to come off the press.
