Wilson to Me . Penny Bryanf Wilson doesn'f need me anymore. Ofhers will come fo fake my place and school life will go on unchanged. I foo will go on, buf nof unchanged, for Wilson has prepared me for 'rhe fufure. Before I face fhaf fufure, I shall fake one Iasf and fleefing look backward, a farewell look af pasf friends. a serious look af pasf learning, a fhoughfful look af pasf philosophy. Commencemenf is a fime of beginning, of hope, buf if is also an ending, a fime fo realize whaf Wilson means fo me and fo remember 'rhe fhiings fhaf counf. Wilson fo me is spirif, one of fhe fhings fhaf counf. Spirif is fhe voice of Wilson, a voice whose power comes from loyal sfudenfs .cheering and working fogefher. I musf face fhe fufure, buf I glance back once, wifh a farewell look af pasf friends, pasf spirif. We cheered fogefher as our feams won or Iosf, knowing fhaf spirif does nof depend upon vicfory buf rafher upon fair compefifion and sporfsmanship. The currenf of feeling in fhe air, fhe breafhless silences and resounding yells, brighf spofs of red and gold-fhese are s'piri'r. We worked fogefher af Thanksgiving and Chrisfmas, helping fhose less forfunafe fhan we fo have a share of our happiness. We collecfed rags and rummage, baked cakes and washed cars: we earned money and spenf if fo benefif ofhers. This, foo, is spirif. Loyal sfudenfs, cheering and working fogefher-and making friends as we did so. And if we never see fhese friends again, fhey are friends sfill, friends who made Wil- son whaf if is, and made us whaf we are, who gave help. made suggesfions, broughf fun. Wilson fo me is knowledge, one of fhe fhings fhaf counf. Knowledge is fhe body of Wilson, whose wisdom comes from helpful fea-chiers and diligenf sfudenfs. I musf face fhe fufure, buf I glance back once, wifh a serious look af pasf learning. A schooI's purpose is fo feach, and ifs classes are organ- ized 'fo give sfudenfs skills ranging from solving fhe prob- Iems of 'rrigonomefry fo solving fhe problems of everyday living. While we may forgef fhe minufe defails fhaf we once learned, fhe greaf concepfs remain wifh us fo sfimulafe our fhinking and fo furfher our undersfanding. If is said fhaf edu- cafion is 'rhe cornersfone of democracy, and Wilson has faughf The fundamenfals of learning and living which have prepared us fo accepf our places as cifizens of fhaf demo- cracy. Those places will nof be easy fo fill, for our world is froubled. This foo we have been faughf--an awareness of foday's problems fhaf we may safeguard our fufure. This is our nafion: we musf claim if! These are our lives. We musf live fheml Our nafion? Yes! We musf nof Ief falk of fhie fhunder clouds piled above us so numb us wifh fear fhal' we are noi fif fo dispell fhaf gloom. There is much fo do ofher 'rhan wail' fo sink or be saved by fhe power of fafe. One lives, of course, and we musf live each momenl' free of a lefhargy fhaf lefs us forgef our blessings. We musf nof, however, allow complacency fo blind us fo our faulfs. This, fhien, is whaf Wilson has faughf us. We have also learned fo work and accomplish under rules of an organized sociefy. For surely Wilson has ifs so- -ciefy, and if is organized under a school governmenf, faculfy supervision and counfless clubs and inferesf circles. Each Wilsonife, subiecf fo fhe aufhorify of more fhan one of fhese groups, has learned fo govern and be governed, fo accepf and fo delegafe responsibilify. Life is a series of vic- fories and defeafs, of compromises and agreemenfs. So our sociefy has faughf us. Wilson fo me is ifs philosophy, one of fhe flnings fhal' counf. Philosophy is fhe soul of Wilson, made frue by fhose who accepf ifs creed. I musf face fhe fufure, buf I glance back once, wifh a fhoughifful look af pasf-and presenf- philosophy. No Wilsonife can forgef fhe Four-Way Tesf, which by ifs posifion in each classroom has become a parf'gf Wil- son's philosophy. If has also become a parf of fhose who have read, inferprefed, and used ifs docfrines. True? Fair? Beneficial? These are fhe quesfions if asks, and fhose who answer. Yesl know fhe eesence and secref of success. The plaque before WiIson's main enfrance is anofher visible sign of fhe Wilson ideal. If speaks of' frufh, Iiberfy, and folerafion as fhree of fhe achievemenfs and fraifs of a free counfry and humane individuals. I-Iumaneness is in ifself a philosophy, one which accepfs in a mechanized world fhe imporlance of fhie individual. Man like a machine is fangible, buf embodied wifhin man are all fhe infangible beliefs, creafions, ideals which have builf civilizafion and which have power fo desfroy if. Thus fhe human elemenl' becomes an ever greafer force, and fhose who underesfimafe ifs value fail fo see fhaf fhe only world power is in The hands of men, nof in science or fhe machine which man has developed. A machine is delicafe. buf if is nof fhe individualisfic, fhinking fool 'lhaf man is. This, fhen, is Wilson's philosophy, composed of fhe virfues which creafe folerance, accepfance, undersfanding. Now I am leaving Wilson and I see Iasfly fhaf Wilson fo me is fhe fufure, in parf. I+ has prepared me and faughf me-buf now I musf fake fhe final sfep. This is a beginning, and I have sfopped glancing back. A whole world of ad- . yvenfure and opporfunify lies before me, and I'm ready fo meef ifs challenge. Wifh spirif, knowledge, and a philosophy I face fhe fufure confidenfly. , This, too, We Slcioll Remember
